You're really not wrong. Her voice probably changed partially due to age, but
smoking really does give you a different singing voice, for better or worse. I'm a musician,mostly a guitar player but occasional singer, and I don't smoke often, but even if I've had a few cigarettes before singing, I can already tell a difference in my voice, it's scratchier, and it actually makes you sound better in SOME songs, mostly bluesy type stuff, sort of like this song. Of course, I'm not encouraging smoking, just my experience.

She doesn't just have an amazing voice. She's as good a front man as anyone; past or present. She's fucking awesome.
her voice is better than just anyone's. you have to hear her tone properly from other performances and also recordings. you can really hear that she keeps the pitch. most singers today, they may be able to do all that fancy vibrato and runs shiet, but their pitch on its own, would sound bad without the vibrations.
