@@DaveZalstein ah ok. My old ram1500 used to get 13-15L/100k as a daily, but it handled and rode terribly around suburbs or twisty roads. Would much rather a sports ute like this. Here in Canada, all our utes are imported from the US, so they're mostly large pickup trucks. The falcon and commodore utes I've seen online look way cooler to drive as a daily. Hope you're enjoying it!
@@eyecontrol4900 Interesting stuff. I most definitely still love driving my Ute, and perhaps you could see if the team at www.lefthandutes.com/ are still doing conversions for the US and North America...

Hey Terry Casson, it ain't bad, that's for sure. It drives great, goes great, and sounds great - what's not to like. The whole end of local production here in Oz is a real shame, but at least the final cars were some of the best. Cheers for commenting and watching, hope you enjoyed the video :D
Hi Greg, thanks mate - appreciate the support. The end of local production was a hugely sad moment, but the joy of owning one of these cars is everlasting. Drive safe man.
Great Stuff, and love the ute, Had a SV6, and would love a SS V Redline, Well done, Great Colour too!! I went Light My Fire!! and will keep long long term!! Cheers Greg
Hi I remember the first time I watched your video was your car actually being built at Elizabeth in South Australia I just stumbled your crush your video just now always wondered have you done any modifications or we have what are you done from it from the day you bought it from the factory or the day you took her through a tour in the factory good on you mate
Hi Tim, apologies for the delay. That's so cool that you've been following the story - that Elizabeth trip was mega! I've still got the Green Machine, all stock, no mods, no changes, all original, and it just ticked over 18,000km the other day. I'm definitely planning on hanging onto it for many, many years to come, and I'm more than happy leaving it as untouched as possible for something that still gets driven (albeit not every day). Cheers for your support and passion and I hope you'll subscribe to the channel and watch and share some of my other videos too. All the best mate and stay safe :D
About to purchase a car very soon. I'm torn between getting a SS similar to yours or a R34 Skyline GTT Personally what do you think about the R34 Nissan Skyline?
Ha! Hey Kenny Last, no joke, I used to own a silver R34 Nissan Skyline GT-t - that's hilarious. Two totally different cars but both can be huge fun. The Skyline is an awesome car - super torquey engine, great dynamics, brilliant to drive - plus actual space for people. The Ute is mega fun, sounds rad, and offers versatility of a different kind with the tray (unless you're getting a regular SS sedan, but still good). I love my Ute but I still have very fond memories of my R34... Tough call but a personal preference in the end. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful mate but thanks for dropping us a note. Cheers.
Great review Dave. I just recently got a 2017 VF2 SSV Redline Sedan (need to get the family around) and love the car. I have 3 gripes though, and wonder if you share these gripes with me :). One you've already mentioned. :) The Gearbox. Coming from high powered Japanese sports cars (still have them, can't get rid of my toys), the gearbox in the SS feels like a brute. It shifts smooth enough between gears, but the clutch seems to bite hard, the pickup point is not where I would expect it, and get the accelerator and clutch engagement all wrong and you end up with some rough sensations through your leg lol. But it works well enough so can't complain too much. My second gripe is the seats. I find them comfy enough, but as you said, they are designed for big aussie men :) I'm definitely an aussie, but not big :) So I find they really don't hold me in place as they should, especially if driving with spirit on a twisty road. And speaking of seats, I'm miffed that we missed out on the heated memory seats. Can't understand why really. The Chevy SS gets the heated seats, so does the Calais. Why does the top tier Redline miss out? And lastly my third gripe, granted a small one, the headlights. It really should have LED headlights like all other modern cars. Instead we have old fashioned Halogens. They work well enough, but once again, the Chevy SS in the U.S got HID headlights, why could we not have them here? All that aside, its a great car, and love driving it.
Hey Mark, glad you dug the review and stoked you're (mostly) enjoying your car. I totally hear ya with the gearbox and clutch, but I've had my ute a while now, and I do find I've gotten used to it, while I suspect the gearbox 'meat' has slackened off somewhat too. Ditto with the seats - not super snug for the more slender chap, but hey, 'straya... And the halogen headlights have been a complaint for a while, but as I say, remember how old that base platform is and how little money Holden and GM had towards the end of local production, and it's not a massive surprise they couldn't lash out on LEDs or HIDs. If you think Holden skimped on costs too, go sit inside one of the last FG X Ford Falcons... Regardless, cheers for watching and hopefully you like some of my other vids as well :D
I also have a 2017 redline ute 6sp manual transmission, l overcame the accelerator/clutch problem by installing a idrive unit l ve got them in two other vehicles ve/ss sedan and a triton
Congrats buddy on your ute. I'm also a big fan of Holden ute. I live in PNG and would very much love to own a ute one day. Especially the 2017 model. Which one would you best recommend; Manual transmission or Automatic Transmission.
Hey Murphy Yowoura, thanks for watching and for your kind words. Utes are cool things and I'm glad more and more people are standing up and saying so. Personally, I'm manual guy all the way, but I totally understand why a lot of people might opt for the auto. Personal preference I guess, but the auto is still largely good, just a tad less fun and engaging for my money. Hope that helps a bit mate. Take care and good luck :)
@@DaveZalstein hey mate, thank you for your reply. I'm hoping to buy a ute from Aussie and shipping up to Papua New Guinea. Slowly but surely. Will get there.
Hey Wolfgang Martin, AWESOME! I love me a Sportwagon and in Spitfire, that's a lot of greeeeeeen - well done. Enjoy the car, drive safe, and I hope you liked the video :D
Excellent review I absolutely loved it, The VF2 SSV Redline is hands down my favourite car of all time, I just have one question: do you have any practicality problems with it and it's every day use?
Thanks heaps Joshua Smith - glad you liked it. Look, I love my ute and I bought it knowing it's just a two-door car with a big boot. But, for me at least, I've had no issues with practicality and daily use. I've thrown my mountain bike in the back, I helped a friend move (you have to if you have a ute, it's the rules), and generally I've been loving it. It is a big car though, so tight car parks and narrow access points can be tricky, but you've got parking sensors front and rear, and a really good rear-view camera. Hope that helps mate :D
@@JamesTessa Good luck man, and no, I'm not aware of any specific issues to look out for other than general wear and tear, a lack of servicing, or a noisy or busted engine or gearbox. Let me know how you get on though - #utelife
Couldn't agree more Big Al - especially sad now given the recently announced death of the Holden Commodore... Cheers for watching and have an awesome Xmas and a safe and happy New Year.
Hey Anthony, it most certainly is a great car - brings me joy and smiles everyday. Most definitely still own it, and no, it ain't for sale, but I appreciate you asking. Cheers mate.
Hi Vinnie Lawrence and nice work on the car. Short answer, yes - the manuals do have launch control. Long answer... Push the traction control button twice and you should activate 'Competitive Mode' Then depress the clutch fully and then do the same with the accelerator The system 'should' hold the revs at a set limit until you release the clutch and you're away Hope that helps mate. Thanks for watching and take care :D
The last German made Commodore was very well built however it suffered from a lack of power and also a narrow cabin compared to the Australian made Commodore that it replaced. The replacement German made Commodore was losing sales to the cheaper Astra and people were even commenting that the new Astra was a better car. See even though the Australian made Commodore was updated over the years, its design concept successfully blended proven motor/chassis/suspension and steering engineering suitable for long distance driving over rough roads with state of the art safety and parking technology never seen before in a mass produced car. This safety and parking technology was not included in the replacement German made Commodore. GMH also underestimated the patriotism of the Australian public and realized after severe financial losses that their forward planning team failed to increase market share, which nearly lead to the collapse of GMH in the Australian market.
Pretty spot on I'd say David Matherson. There was a lot that led to the death of the Commodore and I suspect we'll see GMH pull out of Australia altogether rather soon. Who knows though...
@@haydenedson8344 not in the Ute no,we had the Monaro though which is a Vauxhall over here obviously and the VXR8 the Americans had the Pontiac GTO at least 💯 I've never saw a Ute over here!!
@@rutter1ify Apparently we exported some vxr8 maloo utes to the UK but they are super rare so you probably won't see one, and America got the the Chevy ss which is a VF Commodore but only in the sedan. Its a shame you guys didn't get any Ford Falcons though.
Hi, random question. Is this the same vehicle as the vauxhall maloo vxr8? Saw what i thought was a maloo yesterday here in uk, and a friend said look for an aussie version, I swear it called me a pom as it drove by haha. It could well have been a Ute tho.
Haha, Ute yes, the same no. The Vauxhall Maloo VXR8 LSA is the same as what we Aussies call an HSV Maloo R8 LSA: it's supercharged where my humble Green Machine is merely a Holden (not a Holden Special Vehicles) and uses a naturally-aspirated 6.2-litre LS3 V8. Either way, a proper Aussie version is way better than whatever junk they sell over in the UK, ya Pom (jokes haha).
Hey John Loye, thanks for the kind words - I love it too :D Not sure how well they realistically would've sold in the US, but it sure would've been cool to see. What are you driving?
I so badly wished GM brought these over to the states as the Chevy El Camino, they literally had prototypes as the Pontiac G8 ST and had tooling for production but killed it last minute, but what can I honestly expect from GM. These would have sold so well and would solve my dilemma of wanting both a pickup and a sports car. But now Holden is dead and we can't do anything about it unfortunately.
Sad all around isn't it? Not sure what sort of numbers a Holden Ute/Chevy El Camino would've sold in the current climate, but it would've been cool to see regarldess. I've heard of these guys if you're still keen for a bit of Aussie flavour - www.lefthandutes.com/ - but not sure what sort of costs you'd be up for. If all else fails, you might just have to come to Oz (once all these COVID-19 restrictions lift) and drive one for yourself. Cheers for commenting though and I hope you liked the video... Take care mate :D
@@DaveZalstein Unfortunately for me I am only 17 and the closest thing to a Ute I have is an Biante diecast, and I don't think my parents would be too keen on me flying to OZ to drive "a weird half truck mutant thing" as they called it lol. General motors are complete Muppets the Holden brand and it's product's we're a money spinner great car's and utes marketed correctly they could've been much more, damn shame there no more.
Hang on to it Graeme Williams, especially now the Commodore is dead. As for the bonnet protector, I just can't do it... Trying to leave things all stock haha.
Hey Lochran Doherty! Look, technically it's a utility vehicle, but you could argue a muscle car in that's got a thumping 6.2-litre V8 in it and an old-school manual transmission. It may not be a true 'sports car' but it does handle a proper drive pretty damn well. Tough call I guess. What do you think?

The car also has a maximum braked towing capacity of 1600kg, or 750kg unbraked. Hope that helps mate and cheers for watching :D

Haha, I stacked my bike a little bit before filming this, and a black eye was part of the result. Eh, I'm not that handsome at the best of times, so no stress haha.
Hi Matthew, I fractured my radial head when I stacked my bike. It was in a sling most of the time, but they don't usually use a cast for a fractured radial head. Hope that clears it all up for you...

Only is aussieland would they call a car a ute, sounds like a vegetable ! I absolutely love this machine other than the hideous colour but damn this thing is unreal and not available here in Canada or the US
What a shame it had to go. Holden could’ve used the GM Alpha platform, which underpins rear and all wheel drive cars, like the Cadillac ATS. They would still have the V8 engines.
Dave Zalstein Every time I drive by Grand River and Flat Rock, I often feel sorry for all those enthusiasts down under that didn’t get a proper next-gen Ute or next-gen rear-wheel-drive sedan down under. Plus, I wish the U.S. would make the new utes legal for import.
@@rileysmith9843 Aussies can buy a Camaro and ZL1 here, but (obviously) not a sedan. As for Utes, I think everyone deserves a Ute haha - particularly a V8 rear-drive one. #utelife
It does suck. Long story long, read this: jalopnik.com/why-the-death-of-australias-car-industry-is-a-dagger-th-1819857863 In short, "If you believe the spin, Holden’s local shutdown is mostly the result of increased production costs, economies of scale, free trade agreements and the like. It’s hard to continue building cars in Australia, if you can’t make any money doing so. We have a small car market in Australia. Not many of our cars get exported. It’s cheaper to build them elsewhere and import them than make them here. Additionally, and often less talked about, the truth of the matter is that back in 2013, GM global wanted more government support to help secure a manufacturing future in Australia. That support was something the center-right government of Tony Abbott at the time simply would not agree to for a variety of reasons. By the end the numbers weren’t on the Commodore’s side either. Although Aussies had once loved their large sedans and coupes, the Commodore being one of the most popular, sales had plummeted over time. For context, at its peak, 153,026 Commodores were registered in Australia in 2005. By 2010, figures had fallen to 45,956 units. Despite all the sentimentality surrounding this month’s closure, 2017 too will not go down as a highlight year for the model, with year-to-date sales currently standing at a meager 17,194 units."

Hey Terry Casson, it ain't bad, that's for sure.
It drives great, goes great, and sounds great - what's not to like.
The whole end of local production here in Oz is a real shame, but at least the final cars were some of the best.

I'm torn between getting a SS similar to yours or a R34 Skyline GTT
Personally what do you think about the R34 Nissan Skyline?
get the SS it'll shit on the GTT lol

Hey Murphy Yowoura, thanks for watching and for your kind words.
Utes are cool things and I'm glad more and more people are standing up and saying so. Personally, I'm manual guy all the way, but I totally understand why a lot of people might opt for the auto.

Hi Vinnie Lawrence and nice work on the car. Short answer, yes - the manuals do have launch control.

Looks so cool 👍 would love to own one here in the UK 💯

Haha, Ute yes, the same no. The Vauxhall Maloo VXR8 LSA is the same as what we Aussies call an HSV Maloo R8 LSA: it's supercharged where my humble Green Machine is merely a Holden (not a Holden Special Vehicles) and uses a naturally-aspirated 6.2-litre LS3 V8.

Not sure how well they realistically would've sold in the US, but it sure would've been cool to see.

I so badly wished GM brought these over to the states as the Chevy El Camino, they literally had prototypes as the Pontiac G8 ST and had tooling for production but killed it last minute, but what can I honestly expect from GM. It does suck. Long story long, read this:
jalopnik.com/why-the-death-of-australias-car-industry-is-a-dagger-th-1819857863
In short, "If you believe the spin, Holden’s local shutdown is mostly the result of increased production costs, economies of scale, free trade agreements and the like.
