Good work Paul. I saw another comment expressing dissatisfaction about the non-machining content, but I for one like the variety. The clear thumbnail and accurate title gave me a good clue that this particular video was nothing to do with machining, it would have been easy for me to skip it if I was not interested in house improvements. Keep up the good work! Cheers! Craig
Hi Craig, thanks for your support. Probably 10-15% of my videos are practical topics outside the workshop, and the occasional video on where and how we live here in UK. Summer is always busy and there are many calls on my time but now we are getting into Autumn I'm getting some time in the workshop again. The irony is I can spend a week making a video in the workshop and get 300 views, and then some other time post a 3-minute vid on oiling a door lock and get 26k views! It was just a filler but is now my highest earning vid by a factor of two! The next video will be a bit of TIG welding and drilling, back in the workshop. Cheers
Hi Andrew, there are quite a few options. The concertina ladders require very little space and are surprisingly sturdy. I've fitted two now, both where space was restricted. Cheers
Cheers Paul. I went for the type that needs no overhead clearance too, though mine is wooden. A previous address came with a (cheap) aluminium one which shed aluminium powder every time it operated (it slid metal on metal, quite a poor design) which was almost impossible to remove from the carpet and I said never again! Thanks for sharing 👍 🇬🇧
Hi TRM, I've also had the sliding aluminium ladder experience. I've found the device that locks the two/three sections when the ladder is extended can be tricky and maybe it locks on one side and not the other and then the ladder is wonky when you stand on it. The concertina ladder is a bit more expensive but works in very confined spaces and is surprisingly sturdy. Cheers
Really useful thank you. By complete chance i just bought this very ladder at auction and it did not come with instructions, nor a note as to brand. I have exactly the same space constraints which is why i wanted a concertina variety. Thanks again.
Hi Mark I'm glad it's useful. Like I say, I'm no expert it's just a bit of home DIY but it's not fallen off yet. 😁 You could probably do a better job with the door hinges than I did - daughter reports one hinge is coming lose. I think the door is binding on those draft-seal wood strips I nailed round maybe forcing the hinge a bit. Cheers
The ladder looks good. We have an A-frame roof so we had to modify the ladders to fit the available headroom. The type you fitted would have worked but I don't think they were available at the time. One thing we did differently was make a new insulated lift door by putting two bits of ply around a wood frame and filling the gap with insulation. It was a quick and cheap way of keeping more heat in
Hi GTB, the concertina ladders are designed for specific ceiling heights like 8 foot, 9 foot, 10 foot etc. If you get the wrong one it is too vertical or too shallow. We could have fitted an insulated loft hatch arrangement like you did but we would have needed the 9 foot ladder rather than the 8 foot ladder. Could have been done but we went for simplicity this time. Cheers
Hi Gary, window replacement and loft ladders are a bit 'off topic' so I don't put subjects like that in very often but it's real life and to be honest DIY topics often get more views. 3.5 minutes of 'Oiling a lock' has had over 26k views 😮! Haxby Shed will be back in the workshop next week. Cheers
Several years back I installed a really nice ladder for a client of mine in Austin tx...Definitely a bit involved on these types, but really nice when done.... Totally can relate to not being practical to film jobs like this...I often feel like I should just have a film crew follow me around..lol..probably have a much bigger channel then
Hi Craig, yes it's difficult to video in confined spaces and poor light. I know some creators have 5 synchronised cameras, studio lighting, put on a clean shirt, brush their hair, and smile a lot ...... I can't be bothered messing with all that.🤨 Cheers
Hi Kevin, I've fitted two of these concertina ladders now. With the first one the rafters were only about 2 feet above the hatch at the highest point and I had to crawl in practically. The concertina was my only option and it was surprisingly sturdy. Cheers
Good clear installation video. I have the same ladder and found out the hard way how dangerous that metal retaining clip for the hatch door is. If your hatch is quite small like mine, it's easy to catch the back of your head on that clip when climbing the ladder. I've replaced mine with a spring loaded bolt type which doesn't protrude from the side of the hatch frame. Also, I find my ladder very difficult to lift and release from the double spring support frame (using the stick and hook method) as it wants to push the whole ladder assembly back up whilst doing it. Wondered if you've had any similar issues?
Hi MadLFC, yes it is a bit stiff and I usually get a chair or steps so I can manually lift the loft ladder off its hooks holding the hatch door down and pushing the ladder up. Cheers
Very useful Paul. Our quest room has a fold down spring loaded access ladder. I was amazed how strong it was when we had to replace one of the air handlers. The crew had to dismantle the old one, to remove, and same with the new replacement. The job took only 5 hrs, and if I had tried to tackle it, well,,, won't go there,,hehe! Nice install, and your daughter is very lucky to have a you as a father (@@)! 6 days til roughcut2022,,,are you going to enter this year? Bear.
Hi Bear, that was good reminder about roughcut2022 thanks. My next video is certainly 'rough cutting' so I could delay it a day and post that on the 1st Oct. I'll have to ask my conscience whether it meets the criteria strictly speaking. Cheers
Hiya John, I like to keep myself busy but I have to be quite strict only accepting jobs that they cannot reasonably do themselves. And when I do a job for the family I try to make sure they learn from it. Cheers
Problem I have with mine is if it's a higher ceiling you can't operate it with a pole if you hook it on to the intergral hooks it takes a lot of force and unhhooking it is impossible as every time you push up the thing hinges upwards. I use mine by not hooking it in position which is a bit precarious but the springs will hold it if just closed to the hooks. It is a design issue that is annoying.
Hi superiorbeing 🤣, yes I agree. I have a concertina ladder in my own house, like the one you saw no choice due to restricted roof space, and I have to use a step ladder to reach and push the concertina ladder off the integral hooks before extending it. There could be a better way, but I've not seen one any different yet. Cheers
@@HaxbyShed The hooks on the website are different to the ones on the ladder i received, mine are much deeper and not sloped. Quite a bad design, i thought of putting a baton on the inside of the hatch and just letting them rest on that. It's a shame because it's a quality ladder let down by that poor latch design.
I have the same issue. It's an obvious flaw in the design. Defeats the whole purpose of having the ladder in the first place. You need another ladder to access that ladder. 😀
Hi Bill, I think £450 is about the going rate at the moment. They were quoted £1000 for widening the opening, a new complete hatch door unit, and a nicer ladder. Still money is money and I was happy to help. Cheers.
Nice work Paul. 🔧⚒🔩
Thanks Randy, appreciate your comments. Cheers

I just found the ladder that I'll be installing in for my attic access. Thanks for the video.
Hi Randall, I'm glad it was useful. Regards
VERY CLEAN INSTALL, NICE JOB, AND THANK YOU PAUL.
Thank you Kimber. It's a very self-contained compact unit. A bit more expensive to buy but simple enough to fit. Cheers
Hi Paul. Very interesting and useful. I am in need of changing my loft access and this has given me useful pointers. Very timely. 👏👏👍😀 Andrew

Very helpful as I am just about to fit that exact type of loft ladder.
Hi Paul, glad it was useful. Cheers
Always enjoyable. Thanks Paul!!!!!

I've installed a lot of stairs but that's the first time I've seen a concertina.

Nice vid. Exactly the similar outlay of my roof. Just one question. Do the stairs feel sturdy to walk on?
Hi wormwood, yes they are surprisingly sturdy. Any flex is minimal. Cheers.
Do your family know you've retired Paul 🤔😁.
Nice job.
Thanks for sharing.

£450 is what I charged for the last one I did for someone. Basic 2 part sliding timber ladder.

With hope in my heart for the victory of Ukraine and the entire civilized world over Putin's Russia, and wishes for peace and well-being. Igor!
Hi Igor, we are grateful that you are safe. We watch the latest news from Ukraine with great interest. We see the tragedy and suffering. Kind regards.
