The amazing work on Mindhunter had me investigating that series again. The VFX are seamless. Just so sad Mindhunter fell over after series 2, there was the untold story about BTK being built up in the series. I just hate it when Netflix can't commit to a whole story, they seem too fixated on cheap filler content that's just flash in the pan
I'm absolutely with you on this! But I read somewhere that this time the director was called off to other, major projects. So maybe not entirely on Netflix this one...
Season Two had some great bits, but as soon as they resorted to putting children as the motivation for every sub-plot, I knew they had lost inspiration. Season One is just phenomenal.
Incredible standard of work. Great to see a breakdown at a speed which allows us to see what is going on - the vast majority are at break neck speed. Thank you.
Not really, they're making basic lighting, blending and composition mistakes that cause the real assets to stick out sorely against the digital ones. It's the level of work you'd expect from someone working on their own with blender at home, not a dedicated studio working on actual major projects. But then again, when the average consumer actually thinks this kind of stuff is an "incredible standard" it allows studios to keep churning out this kind of bargain bin work.
Awesome work everyone. Would have been hilarious if you gave the newscaster a CG period-specific hairstyle. RIP Mindhunter. I hope Fincher continues to throw you guys work.
Is anything done ON LOCATION anymore? This was great work because the VFX just disappear into the background and are not noticed. The mark of truly great cgi work.
I started teaching myself VFX using youtube 18 months ago and feel confident in my ability to replicate everything shown in this reel, not to take away from the reel or boast on my personal ability but instead to point out that with hard work and dedication you can almost always exceed your expectations, just cant be scared to dive in head first. this isn't where you draw the line, Blender is. 🤣
@@clancaponeu can load a ton of assets from several resources such as sketchfab wich even has a nice blender integration that lets u search for downloadable assets within blender and append them to your scene, not only that but u can use paid addons like the one from the folks of "grasswald" they provide very detailed vegetation, and there are many other great addons for all sorts if things that make building a scene moch more efficient and less time consuming. U just have to pay a lot for addons and subscriptions.. thats where blender comes into play.. its free and open source and with it u cant just create all assets urself.. u can go even further than that and this here is a great example.. im just 3-4y into blender and already doing much more than i thought i would be doing. can’t stretch out how much impact this tool had for me as an creator.. much love to the blender devs ❤
Great work, for sure, but as someone who works in production & post it drives me nuts when these VFX house's reels are cut so fast you can't really appreciate or take in the quality of the work. Slow down, let the shots breathe, allow me to appreciate the raw to final.
They are all great. Most of them are completely unnecessary though and result in visual ballast. Today's shows are hard to watch as they are overstimulating.
How are they separating the foreground elements from the background effects plates? Rotoscoping? And that establishing shot of the prison? Are they rotoing the tree? Crazy!
Motion tracking the scene, then matte painting out the background using rotoscoping and replacing it with a different background/adding elements into the foreground. The expertise of it here is stunning
@@kipkipful I am specifically talking about compositing. For motion graphics ae is single handedly the best. Even in compositng for quick and noncomplicated work ae is fine. But if you are doing anything complicated or serious nuke is simply way to go. Nodes too powerfull.
There was almost certainly intent behind those changes, particularly since it's based on true events. The grass was likely adjusted to account for how it would look at the time of year the event happened and the smoother concrete may have been changed for similar reasons, perhaps it was newly constructed. You can also see them erase a sloped gutter, since those didn't exist at the time either. David Fincher has always been a stickler for this stuff, for a long time Zodiac was considered the high watermark for completely invisible VFX in a movie absolutely full of them, mostly in an effort to make it look as period accurate as possible.
Who the hell would tell me that with those VFX backgrounds the movie will have more affect on me...I mean who cares if the background has 3 more ruin houses? Unnecessary stuff...
2 years go … amazing …. Maybe …. NOW with AI & anyone with a great handle on DaVinci Resolve with VFX background it’s a NO BRAINER. TECH RULES & places like this along with ILM are going to be relics.
I dont like all this fake shit in movies. I can see through it no matter what I watch anymore. Actual locations felt real when they were there. There is no depth to it whatsoever. Its like watching cartoons again

Why did Fincher get sidetracked with Mank? Terrible movie. Mindhunter was the jewel in the Netflix crown.
Season Two had some great bits, but as soon as they resorted to putting children as the motivation for every sub-plot, I knew they had lost inspiration. Season One is just phenomenal.
I'm a video editor and this stuff still blows my mind. AMAZING reel.

fantastic work on mank, that's a spectacularly good looking movie
The Roto work is first class. I've done a lot of it... it is tedious and difficult work. And my results were never this clean.
Mindhunter was a great show, awesome work on the VFX!
Geesh. I had no idea we were seeing so many visual effects in Mindhunter. Wow.
I love how much your team loves detail.
BUT HOW???
WOOW IT'S incredible !
That was a great show. Thanks for VFX breadowns.
Dude HOW did you get such clean plates on people that aren't even on a blue screen, so impressive oml.
I create some of these effects in still shots.... gobsmacked how effective your visual effects are in video with movement and panning... wow!
What's your process for doing that, Steve? Do you have any bts, blog posts, videos or anything highlighting this? Thx
Is anything done ON LOCATION anymore? This was great work because the VFX just disappear into the background and are not noticed. The mark of truly great cgi work.
Many shots we've seen here were shot on location, they just extended the locations
This is incredible work and so clean
This is the part I give up on being a VFX artist and stick with simple in and out cuts for documentaries.

great attention to fine detail
Absolute magic! Wonderful work. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Wow WOW!!
"Please replace this cityscape with an extremely similar cityscape, thanks!"
This is some top shelf compositing, but man RUclips really crushes those dark areas.
I am feeling like I am really living in a desert actually and god is playing his video cassette of VFX around me everyday
😀😀
Incredible. These are my favorite VFX - the invisible ones.
Wow if i was that good i could have a theme park in the background to make my movie
Amazing work
Love the outstanding visuals but I had to turn down the sound for much of it as the 'music' was so tedious, repetitive and irritating.
So awesome and so subtle

mind blowing
The first question that comes to my mind. "Was everything a lie?" 😁
Brilliant, but by the time we hit 4 minutes in, I had to mute the audio before I went insane. There's repetitive and then there's this
brilliant
Yo boss, should I pick up this ladder? Nah...we'll just get rid of it in post.

love it , only the scene in 3:41 I found the plan looks fake in colors and animation
Não é á toa que deixei de ver filmes há muito tempo...
Nice work!!!
this is like a video game
Just astonishing. Invisible cgi 👌🏻
Why not all digital? This would be much easier.

Jesus! You can't believe anything nowadays! What program does this sort of thing?
So movies are not only 100% fake stories but nowadays also 100% fake pictures.

When you see before vfx, you realize that after is beauty but not accurate in terms of realism
Smooth grass = Add dry spots
Cracked floor = Make it smooth
i don't get it!!
if it's imperfect, make it perfect
If it's perfect, do the opposite.

why we need to fake our own skin?
Some of it looks really good, some looks pretty poor, and some of it's just why the heck did they do that?

How does adding trees transform it to the 70’s? Lots of this is just pointless vfx added by the company to justify their price.

That TV show looks so fake. I can see it's a lot of VFX work that has to be done really quickly, but some of the shot don't need to be VFX.
Like NASA's space hoax
Thanks. I hate it.
Thanks. It looks fake and I can tell 70% of the time.
