    Released into the wild by not just individual owners.... But flooded homes and pet stores.
    Not allowing native species to be kept in aquariums was stupid. Importing fish that COULD become invasive was stupid.
    Humans are stupid.

    I had a pair of these in my aquarium for years. Then during Covid they started breeding and in no time I had 140 of them. Once they opened back up I gave all but 1 to the local fish store just to get them out of my aquarium. They were as happy to take them as I was to get rid of them.

    • @johnh539
      @johnh539 14 дней назад +2

      Sadly yes .See my main comment.
      I was in the same situation as you but with Bristle Nose Plec's by time I got rid of the parents I had supplied 4 local fish clubs and 5 shops over nearly 3 years ,as you have to keep them till they are of a sertone size. You start to panic when you have already supplied every one you know. It was about 650 or more and you know that soon these Owners will start to have their aun babbies.
      Think how much fun it would be to have breeding success if it was part of a conservation initiative.

    One of the bad effects of their tendency to make these cluster of holes is the eventual collapse of the river bank and the silt contamination of the water way that can affect the corals in the ocean as the silt gets washed into the ocean. One pair could produce 100+ fertilized eggs each time they breed.

    Offer a bounty of 10 cents per fish. Set up reclamation machines at every boat ramp, like bottle return machines. Feed the fish into the machine, and get a receipt when you're done. Turn in the receipt at any Fish and Wildlife office, or claim it online. Then the machine grinds the fish into paste and squirts it into a tank. Once a week, show up and pump the tank and bring it to a composting facility.

    Lol, I’ve only ever called these fish _Plecostomus_ or, plural, plecos. 😂 Hearing all this "armored sailfin catfish" talk is funny. They’re not a TRUE catfish, such as the kind most people catch and eat, like the giant redtail catfish from South America, or even the marine catfishes. True catfish tend to be dominant predators… even if they’re hunted themselves. Plecos are sold as "algae eaters" because they use their mouths to attach to surfaces and not float away. Plain and simple. Haha. Dumb people. Whoever first sold them, however many decades ago, and marketed them as algae solutions, is trippin. Yes, the young ones will graze on certain biofilm and algae, and also decaying driftwood is a favorite item, fallen fruits and vegetables, etc. But they are not algae specialists, like other fishes. They're far more likely to become scavengers as they get bigger, and possibly hunt worms or invertebrates. Thus, a carnivorous omnivore. They do at least some good when they clean up the dead fish and other fallen animals in rivers. But not when they’re breeding out of control. If only people would have kept the SMALL species of _Plecostomus_ like clown, rubber lip, etc.
