I have seen a spot where the entire bottom of river was covered in these armored catfish aka plecos, they breed like crazy. He asked what is next well it appears released caimans and crocodiles could threaten our native alligators and crocs.
We got these things all the way up here in North Florida in the ocklawaha River, silver River, lake George and the St Johns River. They're spreading like wildfire.
One of the bad effects of their tendency to make these cluster of holes is the eventual collapse of the river bank and the silt contamination of the water way that can affect the corals in the ocean as the silt gets washed into the ocean. One pair could produce 100+ fertilized eggs each time they breed.
Dumping pets into the wild is pretty ignorant. Why are people so ignorant? A small part of the problem might be the dumbing down of language by the media, changing a word like, ‘turbidity’ to ‘cloudy’ for example. Your viewers have phones, they can look up a word if need be.
Offer a bounty of 10 cents per fish. Set up reclamation machines at every boat ramp, like bottle return machines. Feed the fish into the machine, and get a receipt when you're done. Turn in the receipt at any Fish and Wildlife office, or claim it online. Then the machine grinds the fish into paste and squirts it into a tank. Once a week, show up and pump the tank and bring it to a composting facility.

It killed and devoured hundreds of dollars of my imported Chinese fancy goldfish. I can only imagine the destruction they’re causing in Florida! 🇨🇦
This is all from the Hurricanes destroying the fish and reptile nurseries in florida and scattering tge eggs and babies into a perfect groming condition with plenty of food around.
Was catching plenty of these as a teen in forests near the Seminole Res next to Immokalee, at least 30 years ago… calling everything invasive just to get an unlimited hunting license is getting old but hey, Florida Man gots to Florida Mansplain it….
Not like building homes on sand and flood plains then, that erode cliffs and beaches…hmmm! But a Catfish can’t protect its eggs because it might erode a bank. What dumb people!
Invasive immigration is terrible for the local animals, who just want to make a living, but now have to compete with a global influx of competition for food and housing. At least the local animal population has some advocates in the media and in government to be on their side. Other species are just gaslit by the authorities when they notice what's happening.
Lol, I’ve only ever called these fish _Plecostomus_ or, plural, plecos. 😂 Hearing all this "armored sailfin catfish" talk is funny. They’re not a TRUE catfish, such as the kind most people catch and eat, like the giant redtail catfish from South America, or even the marine catfishes. True catfish tend to be dominant predators… even if they’re hunted themselves. Plecos are sold as "algae eaters" because they use their mouths to attach to surfaces and not float away. Plain and simple. Haha. Dumb people. Whoever first sold them, however many decades ago, and marketed them as algae solutions, is trippin. Yes, the young ones will graze on certain biofilm and algae, and also decaying driftwood is a favorite item, fallen fruits and vegetables, etc. But they are not algae specialists, like other fishes. They're far more likely to become scavengers as they get bigger, and possibly hunt worms or invertebrates. Thus, a carnivorous omnivore. They do at least some good when they clean up the dead fish and other fallen animals in rivers. But not when they’re breeding out of control. If only people would have kept the SMALL species of _Plecostomus_ like clown, rubber lip, etc.
