Most likely Rick VE5MIR was referring to an End Fed “Long Wire”, commonly called an End Fed non-resonant wire. The performance of this design is well known and “long” considered one of the most versatile antennas available to hams. A simple 9:1 Unun will match a 73’ wire on 40-10 Meters, often times without the need of an external tuner.

In this configuration (End Fed non-resonant wire), the coax is EXPECTED to resonate and will be choked at an established distance from the feedpoint before entering the transceiver’s input and lighting/surge suppression ground point.

Balun or not....a dipole will have a much lower SWR (than 1:1.6), if you simply use 75 ohm coax. This works very well, if you are operating at lower power levels.
