    Hello Dave; Good idea having an American vinyl tag. Like the regional Music magazine showings. Dylan, The Band, Johnny Cash Americana masters. Lots of artists who have made culturally relevant LPs. Some nice classic albums shown. Good Americana tag response for 2024. Take care, stay warm, Tina & Pat!~

      Hello and Happy New Year, hope things are well. I really went into slump mode after the holidays--I'm really a slacker at heart, and love my hometime, so that's really not all that unusual for me. All that Americana or singer-songwriter, acoustic music has appeal to me. I've been listening to it since Dylan, The Band, The Eagles, since the 60s. It's very comforting at times, and I love lyrics, and occasionally I'll sing along. Lyrics are like poetry and I got into that once too. It's not often you hear acoustic music on the radio like there was back in the day. There is a radio station here I found that places really decent classic rock, so that was a great find for me. When I moved down to east Tx there wasn't much radio at all, and now we even have a NPR jazz station too. Thanks for tuning in my tag. I'll still get inspired from time to time to post. Hope things are well there, and stay healthy. Thanks ya'll.

    Hi Dave, I loved the magazines you showed. The last one you showed had one of my favorite artists on the cover, Bob Schneider. A great Austin Singer Songwriter. I loved that you showed Robert Earl Keen, John Gorka, and Darrell Scott. They don’t get talked about enough in the VC. I’ve never listened to Dan Reeder or Jack Hardy. I’ll have to check them out. And I love The Eagles too. “Desperado” is such an amazing album that doesn’t get the credit it deserves. I live the track “Doolin Dalton”
    Cheers,

      Hey Brian, I haven't checked out Bob Schneider yet, but I need to after your recommendation. After watching nearly all the videos on this tag, I made out a list of everyone I want to check out, and it's a long list. I'm behind in many of the newer musicians. I was just listening to some Jason Isbell today and enjoyed what I heard. Check out Peter Keane's newest work on Bandcamp. I don't have it yet, but I thought it sounded pretty good. Thanks for stopping by, and the comments. ~Dave

    Hi Dave. I found your tag response and subscribed. I have been collecting music for the past fifty years and still like finding new artist to explore. I enjoy listening to many Texas artists and singer songwriters. We have overlap with artist we enjoy and I heard some artists I want to checkout. Thanks for posting your video.

      Hello Norman, I'm glad you could enjoy the video. I have to say I'm not very active these days as I buy less and listen more to what I already own. Americana is just one of the genres I enjoy along with prog, classic rock, folk, jazz, classical, electronic, and some things that I guess fall into the avant garde. Over the years I just have found music to be this expansive abyss, and love that it is. I just said I don't actively buy these days, however, with this recent Americana tag, I've found some new musicians I'd like to buy, and may. I actually picked up one of the bands featured on someone's tag. I found it over at the swapacd site. Thanks for subscribing, and hope you are enjoying your listening, and thanks for the comment. ~Dave

      Hey JT, Jerry Jeff, yes, really good one. I saw him play live in west Texas, small bar, and pretty rowdy, but a lot of fun. He's put out many albums that are worthwhile. I see you have some guitar cases in your vids and wondered if you actively played. With this tag I've been searching/Googling many of the artist/bands unknown to me--there are quite a few. Like you said there's a great weath within the genre. Thanks for the comments.

It's hard to figure out the best way to keep a guitar, although I think overall it's not a big deal as there are guitarist all over the world and in all sorts of climate. My choir teacher said he kept the thermostat at around 70 degrees year around (for the piano), irrc. Between desert dry in west Tx and here in E. Tx, humid deluxe, I preferred the drier climate. I'm not familar with Greenwood, but I haven't gotten over across the Texas border in a long time. I got a lot of my Kottke stuff at Half Price back when CDs were a big thing and vinyl was on the way out--or so was the trend at the time. I used to go to Recycled Books up in Denton some too on the square there. A lot of his stuff is in good shape if you run across it. If ever I'm in that area of the world I'll check out Greenwood. Hi Dave, Great to see you do a tag video. This is largely outside of what I am familiar with, but do love the Bob Dylan album you started with. Tangled Up in Blue is great. I enjoy both Bach and Jethro Tull versions of Bouree, so had to check out the Kottke version, which was nice as well. The Mudlark album sounds interesting from some sampling. Have a great weekend, Richard

    • @culturefan

      Hey Richard, yeah, I tend to prefer the singer & songwriters in the Dylan style that lean into folk and such. I think maybe living in Texas may have something to do with my fondness for it and also my mom comes from a rural background having grown up on a farm in Arkansas. Then too, there just a lot to love about roots music in general, crafting a song with an acoustic guitar although many use electric guitars in this type music as well. But there's a lot to like once you delve into it. Thanks to the comments as always. Hope things are well with you and yours. Cheers.

    Hey Dave, Good to see you and with this. I actually like quite a few of these and intrigued by some others. I went through a bit of a Townes period 15 years ago or so, and remember reading Dirty Linen a bit way back when. I'm intrigued by Joseph if they're anything like The Roches. I do like what Nanci Griffith I've heard too. Another artist in a similar vein I like is Mary Chapin Carpenter. Wow, I never knew David and Daniel Kobialka collaborated, as I like them both. Thanks for sharing all this. Hope all is well down yonder with you in the new year. -Carm

    • @culturefan
      @culturefan 6 месяцев назад

      Carm, how's it going? I remember you talking about a Mary Chapin Carpenter CD, but don't remember, which one it was. I thought it was one of her later ones, or possibly her last one. Can you let me know, which one it was. I'll check it out on streaming, thanks. I tried to track down how Kobialka pronounced his name, and never found out, so I did my best. :) I know I probably murdered it. I have a Roches cassette tape and want to relisten to it, but it's packed away somewhere. Maybe I can dig it out in a few days. But yeah, I do like listening to this type stuff, which has a more earthy feel to it. It can be like comfort food to me. Some people don't listen to lyrics, but I will at times trying to figure out what the musician is trying to convey, the story, etc. There's a whole other art invovled within lyrics and the writing of them. Yeah, things here are fine, buckets of rain lately, but that's okay. Be well and thanks for the comment.

      @@culturefan Oh it's wonderful, Mary's album. It's called 'Sometimes just the sky'. I can't recommend it enough...it's a slower, earthier, yet dreamier and stripped-down selection of earlier as well as newer tunes of hers. Hope you enjoy it...and if you do, don't thank me...thank Shannon D. who turned me onto it. 🙂
      Yes, well I'm not a lyrics person myself, tending to follow the tone and emotion of their voices. Yes though, there is a comfort to some of this stuff...like hearing from an old friend.
      I'm doing cleaning around here and listening to some stuff inspired by your video...with Nanci Griffith among others cued up for later.

So yeah, I'll check it out. I've been spinning tunes this morn as well and need to get up. I need to do a bit of treadmill walking, which I've been reluctant in doing lately, but need to be more active in that area. Winter cleaning sounds like something I need to do as well. Hi, good to see another of these Americana tags, especially one with such interesting albums.
    Nice choice of the Poco album for the illustrated cover. Picking Up The Pieces is great, it’s like the album The Beatles would have made if they were trying to record a country rock album. I’m not sure if you know the story about the cover? Randy Meisner had been painted on the cover, but after he quit the band as a result of being locked out of the editing of the album, it was too late to redo a cover, so the artist just painted the dog over him. Well, that’s how the story goes.
    I love the song No Kind of Dancer by Robert Earl Keen. I wish they’d repress that album, as originals are quite expensive.
    Yup, that’s my favourite Jerry Jeff Walker album, it has a wonderful ramshackle spontaneity about it.
    Cheer - Hedley

      @culturefan 6 месяцев назад

      Hello Hedley--I had not heard that story about that Poco album cover. It's funny I've had it all these years, and that's the first I've heard of it, which is cool. I just picked up a CD from listening to all these Americana tags and bought Whiskeytown's Strangers Almanac. I don't remember who recommended it, but it's pretty good reminding me a bit of The Flying Burrito Brothers. Sort of rowdy roots music. I also recently picked up two Dave Matthew Band CDs. The live one with Tim Reynold at Luther college is pretty good. I know a lot of people don't like him, but I enjoy his acoustic stuff and Tim Reynold is always amazing. If you can find Jack Hardy's Omen CD it's worthwhile. It has a couple of Celtic sounding songs on it as he used to tour Britian and Ireland, I know they probably appreicated that. Thanks for the comments. Hope things are well there. ~Dave

    Not my kind of music at all but it's always great for me to see whatever you're currently into listening to and your history with the music. Back in the 70's especially I subscribed to any music magazine I could get my hands on for the most part since it was hard otherwise to learn about whatever was out there. I do recall 'Acoustic Guitar' magazine. The Everly Bros sure were influential no doubt...

      Hey G, ha yeah, I didn't think it is your cup of tea, but it's the other side of me. I guess a lot of this type music starting with the folkies (James Taylor, Joni Mitchell, Dylan and the like) were the ones to get me into the guitar. I liked the Beatles and all those bands, of course, but I couldn't afford an electric. So tried to pick out what I could from those folk people. I've always admired them as much as anyone else as I think it takes as much talent. But you're right about the magazines, it was pre-internet days and the only way to discover someone as they didn't played where I was living. I looked up that book you were reading. Fairport isn't too far off from many of these bands either come to think of it. Thanks for the comments, take it easy.

      I will often read about musicians lives where I really don't follow their music at all. To me it depends on the time frame (the 50's and 60's being the most interesting to me), and I prefer 'working' musicians-in other words NOT millionaires like the Rolling Stones but folks who barely scrapped by but did it more out of love of the creation of music and their creative drive. I also love to read about the inner conflicts with bands various members, the whole lifestyle and such. As much as I love music and making it, I never really wanted to be a traveling/touring musician, that lifestyle sucks....

    • @culturefan
      @culturefan 6 месяцев назад +1

      @@cosmicpickle6562 You made me laugh with that Rolling Stone line, and I see what you mean. Really they should have stopped around 40 years ago just about. There's a newest doc about Brian Jones that I started watching, it sounded like Mick & Keith pretty much screwed him, but I haven't finished it yet. But too, it seemed like he was too drunk/wasted to do much--sort of like Syd Barrett. But yeah, the lessor known musicians work a lot harder, tho I don't have anything against fame or making it either as let's face it, that's why any artist really do what they do--to make money (and if lucky and talented enough lots of money). But yeah, the era of the 60s does seem to hold an innocent appeal to those of us that grew up in that timeframe even though there was plenty of crap going on then that was bad. I just watched a vid on Vietnam and all that crap there and thought, man, I'm glad I was never drafted into that hellhole. Such a BS war.

      @@culturefan Yes i've always been interested in B Jones, but it's true he was a mess and a pretty nasty person. Still he started the band actually with Ian Stewart and Mick & Keith kind of took over and then pushed him out, though a lot of that is Jones' own fault.
      Regarding the Judy Dyble book-i've wanted that book since it was first publish in 2016. It was never cheap-especially since I believe it's only a British book with no USA publisher. I think there was only one printing because over the years i've only seen the price go up and up, until recently when I saw there are only used copies available. I think it's pretty much a first printing and then that was it, having a limited market I guess. Dyble was promoting the book but the she passed away a couple of years ago. So I had to jump on a used copy for around $33 when I found it-still quite high for a paperback, but really that was about $40 cheaper than the other copies I was seeing.
