This is, by far, the best review I have come across! it is not solely focused on numbers and I enjoyed the whole thinking process that should actually apply to any big purchase
Came for an iPhone review, stayed for personal finance lesson. Thanks for that, I'm definitely holding onto my budget Samsung device until it breaks down and it's still fine after two years, something to be expected. I'd like to have the fluid experience speed of an iPhone for sure but it seems more like an incremental update for me now. I think most people are like me, we need to put effort in closing greater gaps that are present in different and important fields
I'm afraid I have to disagree with some of your conclusions here: There's a huge difference in screen quality between the iPhone 6 and iPhone X - I definitely noticed and enjoyed that upgrade. The improvements between the X and the 11/Pro are much less dramatic, so I'd agree on the claim that upgrading on the grounds of purely screen quality doesn't make sense, but only if you're coming from the iPhone X. Anything older and I'd argue this is a valid upgrade factor! Also, the sound quality is a vast improvement from the 6 to the X, and sure, while you'd want to be using headphones or external speakers for the best quality, I really appreciated that upgrade too. And that's only comparing to the X, so the quality bump in the 2 years since then is a bonus. Similarly, the camera upgrades have been huge, especially if you're comparing with the iPhone 7 or 8! The photo quality is very noticeably different, even in the thumbnails you put on screen from your other video where you say it's hard to tell them apart. The cameras are a massive reason to upgrade, and I would be upgrading from my X to an 11 Pro right now if I could afford it, but I'm in the process of buying a flat so I'm currently just having to live with my tech FOMO 😫 ...On the other hand, buying a flat is a pretty great novel purchase, so on balance I'm happy with that 🙂 Disagreements aside, I do greatly enjoy your section on the two Fs 😀 Love the graph for frequency/measure, and I often think it *is* worth opting for quality in the more mundane everyday items and enjoying our interactions with them each time. Very good points to consider when it comes to making big purchases, and easy to overlook when there are all these other reasons making you want to buy something. I will say that I've derived a lot of delight from my iPhone X, and while I'm sure there has been some degree of hedonic adaptation, I've been very happy with my purchase for the last 2 years, even though it was eye wateringly expensive because I shelled out for the 256GB of storage. No regrets - not being constrained to 64GB and having the freedom to access a lot of my music library, and not having to worry about filling up the storage and having to constantly do maintenance on it - totally worth it for me. Obviously YMMV, but I appreciate your video's perspective, and think using this sort of decision making framework for purchases is a good idea 👍🏻
Agree with you in the screens... IMO, it’s a big deal switching from an LCD to the OLED screen... As of now, I’d rather get a X/XS with lots of storage than the 11...11Pro is too expensive... But I think his point about there not being a huge bump in the experience in terms of software or the Apple ecosystem stands
Ever since the iPhone stopped slowing down iPhones on purpose, the sweet spot in upgrading iPhones is with every complete design refresh (every 3 years). Which is why I’ve kept my iPhone X until the new iPad like design in Q3 2020. Guaranteed ultimate ‘flex’ satisfaction.
I really like the kind of "no judgement" take you have in these reviews. You manage to acknowledge the whole "status symbol" component of a shiny new phone without sounding like you're really talking down on the idea. Your concept of novel vs. incremental upgrades... I think this could be broken down to within the device itself. Sure, you may have had a smart phone for a few years now, but it's possible that a given feature has finally gotten "good enough" that you're willing to actually use it. For instance, if you're into photography and typically rely on a DSLR or mirrorless when you're traveling, once that iPhone camera hits a level of "good enough" for you, you suddenly have that "good enough" camera with you literally all the time. You don't need to lug around an extra few pounds of camera and lens - you're free to enjoy the moment more, and still engage in your hobby in a much more convenient manner. Or suppose you're into gaming, but you always felt like your phone screen wasn't big enough to really enjoy playing games on your phone. Suppose you get a new phone that hits that good enough mark, suddenly you've gone from no games on your phone to games on your phone. I'm on a 7, and I'm still hoping to get another year out of it. But, I'll be honest - both of those cases above are reasons I'm looking forward to upgrading.
Loved how you're relating technology to philosophy,,liked the pleasure of flex part. Tech review that highlights your mind and science behind your feeling rather than specs, Something unrevealed so far, now you're showing the different angle, that's why a fan of you.
Im froom Malaysia where people feel the need to upgrade their phones every two years or so. People in europe meanwhile, doesnt really feel the need to and this video is amazingly eye opening
this video is absolutely brilliant, it almost echoed my decision making when upgrading to the iPhone 11, but in a much more organized and methodical way! nice one ali
This is the best review of a new tech gig. Thank you for remind us that upgrading it’s not necessary. As a minimalist I would rather go on vacation with 700 Dollars than getting a new phone
I had an iPhone 6s until 1 year ago I upgraded to an iPhone Xs with enough storage. So I will not upgrade for a long time, until it will be painfully slow or can’t run certain apps or so on. I’d rather spent it on upgrading my iPad Air first generation to an 2020 iPad Pro or something. So it can replace my almost 5 year old MacBook Pro 13’, which still does the job perfect btw
A perspective that usually stays in the back of our heads, something we never really bring forward to our conscience and act accordingly, has been presented by you Ali in a very genuine and a nice way. Hats off!!! #Novel
Hi Ali, listened to your podcast and its awesome to hear you and Taimur breakdown the content of this video. Btw, Taimur is really quick, he came up with the pleasure of the flex and he offers such radical views that I personally relate or agree to. And I like how you sum it all up together as well and how you guide the brainstorming session. Great content!
Respectfully disagree - I had an iPhone 6 and I upgraded to a 2019 Android flagship, and it was a huge improvement for me. Camera quality, screen and speed. So it definitely gave me huge improvements for the 3 C's. There is definitely a positive difference between iPhone 6 and 2019 flagships like the iPhone 11 when you consider the 3 C's.
I was so close to buying a new iPhone 11 pro when suddenly Allah made you upload this video and thus not only keeping me from spending over 1,300€ on a phone I don’t really need, but also leaving me with some valuable life lessons. Thank you for your great content brother, much love from Germany
I had an iPhone 5s and recently upgrade to an iPhone 11, huge difference. My old phone dis not vibrate, was having speaker issues and the battery was damage so yes, the upgrade was needed. So far, I am have with my choice, I do agree your comments
Oh man this is literally the best tech review by far (as usual). I absolutely love how deep you go into these. Nothing annoys me more than you tubers that just talk about the specs over and over as if we couldn’t just grab it online. I’ll quickly add. I upgraded to the iPhone 11 pro max from the 7 plus and I like Ali states in the video I literally can’t tell the difference. A few things are faster. Money isn’t really an issue for me these days so I decided to do the upgrade purely to stay inspired. And in that regard it was worth the upgrade. I’m now creating more. Intrinsically and externally I feel less friction between where I am and where I want to be. ❤️🙏 Thanks again for the awesomeness. Ps. Do you tutor aspiring you tubers that want to be great like you!?
Love your videos. You’re extremely thoughtful and reflective which is an increasingly rare thing these days. You should do more tech reviews, as well as everything else you continue to do 😅
I upgraded to an 11 pro because my iPhone 7 stopped working. I think that is one of the only good reasons to buy a new phone. The less you buy new gadgets, the less carbon footprint you have (I think?).
can't afford it. but just leaving a comment coz you're awesome my favorite is when you give time stamps and saves me so much time. unique review, fast and clear as always!
why do u recommend camera like sony a6000 rather than iphone? is it big advantage to take pictures or videos using camera than iPhone ? love to hear your opinion. struggling deciding between a iphone and sony camera.
Would upgrading from a non-iphone to an iphone count as a incremental upgrade or a novel upgrade? I was planning to buy one because I wanted to get into the Apple ecosystem because I have notability on my iPad and take lecture notes. I'd like the ability if it's possible, to access my notes on my phone without having to export to a pdf. It's starting to count as a novel upgrade to me, because I'm looking at functionality.
Came here looking for a phone review. Left with life lessons.
No sarcasm intended. 😊
Jassim true, bro thats why Like this guy so much.
Jassim couldn't agree more
Agreed !!
We all get to learn so much from Ali :)
This is, by far, the best review I have come across! it is not solely focused on numbers and I enjoyed the whole thinking process that should actually apply to any big purchase
This is absolutely the best phone review I’ve ever watched.
I love your tech reviews.
They are not pretentious at all.
They are the only ones that look at the value you get for the money you spend.
Kevin McCallister so true

The pleasure of the flex is rather immense 😂
honestly I don't even care what phone anybody has
I’m still always pleasantly surprised having upgraded from “hey guys” to “hey friends” 🤩
The way he says hey friends to start his videos is so wholesome and makes me feel warm inside🥰
Have you ever dropped your phone tossing it around like that?? If that was me it would a quick way to an upgrade...
I enjoy the reverse-flex of rocking the original SE.
How much coffee did you drink before this video 😁
This is the most unique tech review ever created by any creator on RUclips.
I feel smarter every time I watched one of your videos and that is the biggest compliment I can give you.
When are you going to make videos explaining medical topics for med students 😭
Your way of explaining is perfect mA sha Allāh
Ali Abdaal did not know that existed. Just subscribed

Correct
I love everything about this video. Didn’t know choosing a phone could be this philosophical.
Ali: hey friends!
Me: :D
This was the most interesting review I've ever seen tbh :o
from student to junior doctor to doctor now. im proud of you ali

Really appreciate all the hardwork you put in to make this video, which offers more than the average tech review

Great video Ali!
Really enjoyed the video. Excellent points made.

What a great concept for a video you guys do great work.
Loved this analysis!
This is the best review of a new tech gig. Thank you for remind us that upgrading it’s not necessary. As a minimalist I would rather go on vacation with 700 Dollars than getting a new phone
LILIANA SURIEL and I would rather put that money in my contingency fund.
I liked your way of dissecting the decision by inspecting it from multiple perspectives. Nice video
LOVE THE PODCAST!!!!
Love your discussion on tech , always interesting!!

I like when people think about new tech instead of repeating advertising
Enjoyed your philosophical review!
Anyone knows the iPhone wallpaper he's using?
Izak J yeah, he explained it in another Video, just search low poly Wallpaper in google, then you find the one from the iPhone 11 pro max. 👍🏼

Which episode do they talk about this?
i literally love all of the videos u have ever filmed and created
One of the most reasonable review I've seen for an iPhone. Kudos on the reasoning and logical aspects behind making the decision to buy.
Ended up buying the XS after this video thank you for the wisdom. I don’t always need the latest and greatest
Just did the same instead of the 11 Pro, definitely a good choice to save the money
Where can I find your desktop background? It looks pretty. 😍

This is the first time I activate all the notifications, your are awesome. You are being watched from México! 🇲🇽
Loved the review..it gives a whole new perspective! Also been listening to your podcast for the past few months...loving it :)
This episode is great! This philosophic way is genuinely refreshing.

Phone's updates are so incremental nowadays. My 2016 phone will probably only be updated in 5+ years when folding phones are affordable.
Oh man this is literally the best tech review by far (as usual). I absolutely love how deep you go into these. Nothing annoys me more than you tubers that just talk about the specs over and over as if we couldn’t just grab it online.

Nice,I prefer you old thumbnail though.
Really well made video. Enjoyed it a lot :)
Always ready to watch Ali’s videos great man 👍👍👍👍
Could you do a video on alternatives to the apple pencil?
Love your videos. You’re extremely thoughtful and reflective which is an increasingly rare thing these days. You should do more tech reviews, as well as everything else you continue to do 😅
Got 11 over the weekend. Upgraded from 6s+, vastly worth it!
what taste of it? 07:50
no one :
me : let’s watch some Ali Abdaal videos
again me : yea sure
& it never disappoints
I upgraded to an 11 pro because my iPhone 7 stopped working. I think that is one of the only good reasons to buy a new phone. The less you buy new gadgets, the less carbon footprint you have (I think?).
I find the new fonts a bit hard to read.
I’ve been waiting for this!!
7:53 *”the taste”*
I laughed so hard 😂
Phương Lương 😂😂😂☺️🤣
Please do a video on how you get the most out of iPadOS on iPad Pro
Please do more study videos! Or life advice :)
Again, I love how in depth and comprehensive all of your videos are!
Not as keen on the new thumbnail but loving that you're being adventurous and branching out!
I was literally just about to comment on the issue of 'hedonic adaption' right before you mentioned it!
can't afford it. but just leaving a comment coz you're awesome my favorite is when you give time stamps and saves me so much time. unique review, fast and clear as always!
ur finishing review was 😍😍😍
How could I download that purple kinda wallpaper that he has on his 11 pro max ?!!!
You had me on the 1:18. Best review. Keep doing those philosophical reviews Ali!!! I'm really in doubt between iPhone 11 and OnePlus 7t
only ali would think to make a graph on the "pleasure of the flex" lol
I like the way you review tech!!
Best RUclips video I have ever watched.
If u get a kindle, do I gotta buy books ? Or can you import them in ?
Greatest tech reviewer
Thank you for this video. A big relief from listening to friends constantly prodding me to upgrade my phone
“ words of wisdom Ali , words of wisdom !! “ my man ! 🙆🏻🙇🏻
Do you use total concentration breathing?
why do u recommend camera like sony a6000 rather than iphone? is it big advantage to take pictures or videos using camera than iPhone ? love to hear your opinion. struggling deciding between a iphone and sony camera.
2019 and still no USB- C...
Hey Ali, what about if your phone storage is full and you can't save anything else on it? does that warrant an upgrade?
Would upgrading from a non-iphone to an iphone count as a incremental upgrade or a novel upgrade? I was planning to buy one because I wanted to get into the Apple ecosystem because I have notability on my iPad and take lecture notes. Brilliant review. Thank you. 😉

Wow. Some great perspectives on new tech! You really got me thinking…
