- How to avoid a serious fault on the driving test looks at the difference between a minor driving test fault, to a serious driving test fault and dangerous driver test fault on the driving test. I am hoping that some of the examples I use in the video to explain the differences help you to understand and better prepare for the UK driving test.
We look at the driving test report form that you are given at the end of your driving test. We talk about stalling the car and look at would if fail you on the driving test. We also look into your mirror checks and if you don't complete them correctly could result in a serious driving test fault and if the driving test examiner has to step in for safety could result in a dangerous fault on the driving test.
In the UK driving test you are allowed a maximum of 15 driver faults, but getting one serious fault or one dangerous fault will fail the driving test.
Hopefully by avoiding these faults you will be able to drive perfectly and pass the driving test.

passed my test on friday frist time with 1 minor, we were just talking about college and work. As you said just relax, they are people too.
Thank you I think checking my blind spot is something I’m not sure I’ve been conscious of when changing lanes so will ensure for my next driving lessons that my instructor checks I’ve been doing this
Safe driving
I've failed my test twice. Got my third test on Monday! First test fail was because my instructor broke his ankle. had to take a different more power car with a different instructor for my test. So I wasn't used to the car, let alone haven't been trained to do maneuvers properly (instructor was very lazy). Anyway I was 10 minutes into the test, everything was fine, went to turn left into a junction with correct everything but a traffic controller who was going to cross children over was hidden in my right pillar blind spot, examiner had to stop the car. Shook me up bad. Second time was with a new, amazing instructor, obviously wasn't ready and me being a nervous person I failed as I kept jumping and stalling trying to get out the test center. I am determined to correct these mistakes, I've learnt from them loads. My examiner on the second test did say though that I'm a very good driver, just my nerves got in the way. :)

I got given a major fault, for the pulling into the overtaking lane with no cars behind, i checked my mirrors but not my blind spot, thought it was a little harsh!

I had my first driving test this morning. I got 2 minors and then failed within the last minute with a major of the end of the test for a reason my instructor and I highly believe should have been a minor! I have my test again in 2 weeks and will continue to watch your videos until then! You really helped me today to get so little minors ! Thank you !

when I passed I thought I was going to drive badly after stalling at the end of the car park at the start of the test. I just put my hand brake on neutral and turned it back on and carried on. I went on to pass with 3 driver faults. one of those was for the stall. I love driving now. I am driving down to London from near Birmingham tomorrow. Furthest I've driven. I failed my third test due to stalling on a hill start and rolled back. One thing I was always good at was hill starts.

Thanks for all your videos and amazing tips have been really useful has improved my driving a lot trying to deal with my nerves and planning my road ahead. I've got my driving test just over 8 weeks away any tips on how I can prepare fully for it as I do not want to change test date again. My instructor is happy with my progress just need to work on my maneuvers a little bit with my observations and amount of steering on them all.

I failed my first test yesterday , 2 serious and a few minors. The serious was for approaching a junction too fast and observations. I didn’t go over the speed limit nor at any point was I at risk due to my poor observations. So I’m really confused. I can take failing, maybe I’m not as good as I think. But I can’t help but feel there is no way I can correct these mistakes. Junctions fair enough maybe I could be slower, but I put no other drivers at risk and I was well within the speed limit so I don’t get that. How can my observations be poor when there is nothing to observe? Claimed I came out of a junction without a clear left view but I could see fine, I would never enter a junction that I can’t see. Don’t know wether or not to try again as I have no idea how to correct these mistakes

If there is no gap, then you cannot go and it’s no mistake. But if you wait when there is a safe gap, then it’s a mistake

Mayan Hyatt the pass rate is around 50 percent so there is lots of people that don't pass. Try to keep a clear head and try not to think about your mistakes, just focus of your driving. Good luck

Hi, it’s not a full blind spot check. After checking your mirrors you would do a 45 degrees shoulder check. Any car that is parallel with your side would not show in the side mirror.

Hi James failed my test today just right at the end of the test on our way back to test center and it was a dangerouse error,I don't know what was going on my mined and I took the left lane from middle lane without signal or checking my mirrors coz the road was too narrow and it was just about to start 2 lane and I was about to touch the other learner
So are you saying when you change lane you should be doing more than just check your mirrors? I've never heard anyone say you need to physically look behind before changing lane?
Hi, when changing lanes on a dual carriageway to left or right you would need to check the shoulder blind spot. Reason is if a car was passing you slowly, it would disappear out of your side mirror and reappear in your side vision a second later. It can be a risk if you are not using your mirrors effectively.
Have a test almost two weeks time. I passed my theory a month ago and I had to wait a month because I paid £30 extra

Say if you changed gears and the car jumped is that a minor or major?
If it’s a one off and it’s a small judder then nothing, if it keeps happening then driver fault, if a bad harsh judder then could be serious
Just failed my test due to a silly mistake (Didn't see the markings on the floor of the Y junction, the gps was telling me to bear left and I was looking where I should have stopped, the examiner stopped me instead :`( )

James Travis your tips helped me pass first time. Especially listening to the examiner for hints which I did on Test, when she said turn right this right here. She also said you can go closer to the traffic lights after I was waiting near a keep clear sign.

Hii I have Last month my practical test and I been fail second Time, and I fail în 5 min 4 serios mistakes. I don't understand why I fail 4 serios mistakes în 5 min and why with my instructor I am not making any serios mistakes can somebody help me please to explain to me ?? Thank you
That is a good question. It could be a combination of things:
1. Nerves on the day effecting the way you drive.
2. Was not prepared in your build up to the test.

i got a serious for slowing down at a set of misleading traffic lights, i took my foot of the accelerator and my speed reduced by around 5mph so from 30 to 25 and i was given a serious for this ? there was no car behind me or near me neither was there any pedestrians near, should this of been a serious?

i didnt speak to him about it due to me being so annoyed, i will mention it to him on my next lesson, i thought it was better to stay quiet why the examiner was there as i could get the same one.

Laura Mars hi, when moving off from side of road you have to check your blind spots. When driving on the road there are times when a blind spot check is wise such as changing lanes or coming across on a large busy roundabout.

Hi I was just wondering if this was fair or not. I failed my driving test due to not checking door mirror when overtaking a cyclist and I only did this once and he failed me for that. There was no traffic around and he said "A motorcyclist could of gone straight into you" was this a fair fail or should I have received just a minor for that?
Jay Ross it's hard to say if it's unfair or not without being there to see. Though it does sound harsh.
If you were overtaking then a right mirror on the approach and look up the road ahead to see if it's clear, if do give a good clearance from the cyclist and after passing check your left mirror to see cyclist behind you before coming back in. If you done this then it does sound unfair.
Learn-to-drive Travis Yeah my instructor said it was harsh and I only had 2 minors before that. The examiner even said at the end that the drive was good lol. Cardiff examiners are strict beyond belief.

Found a cancellation and passed my test and I did the most horrendous left reverse I have ever done or witnessed and he still passed me! just goes to show a big part of it can be the examiner but thank you for the tips and great videos.

⭐️Tip: Stay calm when driving, the driving doesn’t have to be accurate or perfect just remain calm because after you’ve passed it’s not like you’re going to be a perfect driver, we all make mistakes, especially on your test you have to stay calm and be observant. If you remain calm you’ll have a higher chance of passing because you’re not stressing as much. If you’re not calm it’s going to be difficult to observe and remain calm and actually pay attention to little bits of information that is valuable in the test. Good luck! Hope you all pass! 😊

I failed my test just at the last moment I did a mistake in the last 2 minutes while crossing the junction. My impatience cost me not only money but time as well. With only 2 minor 1 serious fault at the last moment cost me. I am much frustrated on my self😢

I failed my driving test today for a 1 reason that i find a bit strange, Here`s a back story I was in a 20 mph zone doing 15 because it was busy at the time, I approach a Mini roundabout and I see a van parked on my right hand side before the roundabout stopping line, I look right he is right next to a curb sitting inside doing his paper work, so i decided to move on hence i just checked the right for any cars coming and then i see him in the corner of my eye cutting in front of my car the examiner slammed the brake and gave me a dangerous (at that point i knew i messed up), To be fair the van did not signal at all , started to move off with paper work in his hand and cutting in front of me. when i was already on the roundabout about to clear it.
+Artur Garstka thank you for your driving test story. A couple of things you can take away from this is. 1. Don't trust other drivers, keep an eye on them in case it changes. 2. The other thing is you would of passed so try and get a quick test. Good luck.

How is stalling on a junction classed as a minor fault? An examiner failed me for positioning at a junction, I would’ve thought stalling on a junction especially with a car there would be classed as a serious
If you stall and there are no cars there or you do a quick recovery then it’s a driving fault. If you stall and hold traffic up or take a long time to get going then a serious fault
@@JamesTravis I was doing automatic driving test. I feel the decision he made to fail me was very unprofessional and unfair to the fact that there was a car parked right up on the junction of a tight road and I didn’t have much space to position myself to the left to turn right. He then asked me why I was on the right and I told him I didn’t want to scratch the car. We went back around to the same spot and this time I corrected myself and positioned more to the left and he still ended up failing me knowing full well it was a minor fault because I did everything safely even though only that one small error was made

If you do the same minor fault over and over, that can turn into a serious driving fault.
Yes. If you repeat the same fault On the 4th time a serious, sometimes on the 3rd.
It does depend on the examiner though.
@@DaveDVideoMaker yes. The examiner will make a decision based off your driving. So they might even give 4 driving faults in a section and still pass.

I passed my test the third time and was chuffed to bits. I wasn't too bothered about my first fail, but I took it terribly the second time. My instructor made me a bit nervous just before the test and always went on at me about hesitation. I failed because I pulled out of a junction when a van came speeding, so the examiner slammed on the brakes. If I hesitated at that point, I might not have failed

Just watching your videos as have a test coming up . Can you please clarify the first point you said regarding the roundabouts . If we are in wrong lane . Should we keep on continuing in the wrong lane .🤪🤪 sorry if I sound a bit confused
I would stick yo being in the wrong lane and exit the roundabout safely. You would not get a serious for this.
But if you try and change lanes whilst on roundabout to try and correct yourself, you might miss something in the blind spots and cause confusion to other road users.

Got my driving test in a couple of weeks but I've changed it till the end of October. Don't know if this is a good thing as I feel I'm not ready for it yet. I don't think I'm being observant enough. But I find it really hard and feel like I have to sync myself up for each lesson.

Hello there. I had done a mock driving test as part of my lessons and my instructor marked me as having a serious fault at a roundabout. Prior to this he told me when coming to a roundabout and you can't see to the right to approach in 2nd gear possibly first, but if you can see to the right and the road is clear to approach in second, foot off the accelerator. I did this no traffic to my right, starting coming around the roundabout and signalled left to come off, I checked my blind spot and he panicked and took the wheel but he marked me as a serious fault. I found this unfair and he tried justifying his action telling me I should have approached in first. If I'd have been given full trust and exited the roundabout would this have been seen as a serious fault? Or have I got an over worried instructor?
Andy Killingbeck sounds a bit strange. Ask your instructor to fully explain why it is a serious in your instructors eyes, yet they are telling you different
I did try ask him but he couldn't give me an answer. He's been contradictory on a few things during my driving lessons and it's caused us to have disagreements. For the time being I'm going to seek a different instructor.
