You 're only partly right (if I understand you correctly - it's tough with that double negative there ""can't not""....) . Columbia is a private school, receiving some federal funds. Thus, they fall under laws which limit freedom of expression in specific ways: students may not block the access of other students to services/resources; students may not threaten the safety of or harass individuals or groups. There is really NOTHING that justifies the actions of these anti-Semitic bullies.

We've seen film evidence of Jewish students barricaded in a library protected by a teacher from a rabid barbaric palestinian mob screaming for their destruction. That story about "Jewish students barricaded in a library" turned out to be another false story. There was a story about it in the New York Times, the school was Cooper Union, the teacher locked the door but they weren't barricaded in, the Palestinian students weren't screaming for their destruction, the school called a New York City policeman to the scene, and the policeman said he didn't arrest anybody because he didn't see any violation of the law.

In the Germany of the emperors German universties had their own law enforcement. The duke or the emperor granted the universities privileges and their own jurisdiction. Which was marred by antisemitism. In Germany or the germanic countries(even in Russia) antisemitic German students could beat up jewish students at will - without interference oft he law enforcement. The deans in German universities had been as students antisemites themselves and turned a blind eye to everything.
