the exhaust sounds like those videos where people have put a rubber balloon with a hole over their exhausts. sounds wet and loose vs the usual AMG rumble.
This is what Maserati wanted to achieve since 2014 but, being more expensive, it failed even more than the Quattroporte VI. In the 70s everyone with deep pockets would have wanted one of these instead of a Ferrari GT 2+2, nobody today would want a Ferrari GT 2+2.
LOUD, is the single best word to start with the list of issues this car has, even in the video you can hear tire and road noise! I took one for a test drive and I literally had to raise my voice to talk to the person beside me. Not something you should have to do in a $100K+ car.
Because it is essentially what the new CLS63 would have been except Mercedes marketing department decided they could milk more money out of the customer this way.
Someone at Mercedes said "if Porsche can make a crap looking car (mk 1 Panamera)" then we should do too! And they made the AMG GT 4-door. A four door "coupe" with the rear of a small gt car who really thought that was going to look great?! 😆
I mount in this car twice, I never so trapped in a five meters long car... The tunnel is huge, doors are massive, and you have no room for your drivers legs... The finish is just the same than E-Klass and CLS-Klass... I felt more comfy in a CLA !!
My take is that this is one of those Nurburgring cars (it holds the 4 door saloon record if I'm not mistaken)- its built to look like other Mercedes models, but go like stink around that German road. Wether journalists like it or not, it seems to sell cars so companies will keep making these models - even if most people dont buy them.
@@richardlabeja I’ve got an 840i and unless you’re in Germany and doing high speed autobahn runs all the time I’d say it’s a sweet spot. More than enough poke to be enjoyable on a twisty A or B road, lighter engine and no AWD means it feels the most “BMW”.

I haven't seen more people complain about such an amazing car before. If you don't have the funds for it don't buy it? This is a great car, no need to put it down just because it doesn't fit your needs.
Fyi stomping the throttle is the slowest way to accelerate in just about any modern car. If this Merc is anything like mine, you want to set the last gear, sport mode or +, and use smooth acceleration. At a stop, unless you have launch control you can disregard. Use the break (stop) feature. The car is basically staged while in drive to accelerate as quickly as possible and with this you can actually slam the throttle.
I hate how bad these look. In traffic they seem oversized, but not in a good way, like say an S coupe, just like cartoon caricature or clown shoes. The interior quality is dramatically bad. All they had to do is stretch the GTC, slap on an extra pair of doors and call it a day. Flop though? I see 3-4 per day, and can't remember the last time I saw a new CLS.
Once these depreciate to within feasibility for more people, I guarantee the general opinion on this car would begin to swing in a more positive direction. It's always the same with big expensive cars, they're seen as image statements by those that can afford them, but once they fall into your own search criteria you won't rule them out as quickly as you did before. It's the same with the original generation CLS, it wasn't as fondly received as it's being remembered today but I guess that's the motoring world for you.
Hey Jay, real talk question here. Do you like the Kia Stinger more than this vehicle? If anything it would be a good comparison. Like the interior layout. Exterior design etc

Not a fan of the body shape and style. The audi or bmw equivalents always catch my attention a lot more but I still do see this as a very nice car just not my taste
It's always irked me when manufacturers name their 4 door models as a coupe. It's not just Mercedes who do it, BMW do it as well. The definition of a coupe is a 2 door car. That's the main criteria for a coupe. But this model doesn't look that bad tbh, whereas the 4 door 2 series from BMW is an absolute monstrosity of a car that wins every ugly award going.
I'm afraid you're wrong. Coupé is the French word for "chopped" and therefore only refers to the roof. The number of doors is totally irrelevant. In fact, I'll even go as far as claiming that a car can technically only be called a coupé if there's also a version with a higher roof where the coupé is derived from. Also, it isn't Mercedes who started it, it was Rover with the P5B Coupé. A car I own, btw. :)
@@Tential1 nope, Rover did with the P5 coupé in the late 1950s... and there were coachbuilt 4-door coupés in the 1920s, including the original Daimler Double Six built for Anna Neagle.
@@Pietervdv "chopped" could also imply the doors i.e two of the doors being "chopped" leaving just two doors. 4 door cars are either a saloon, a hatchback or an estate. Manufacturers call them coupes as a marketing ploy as they think it will help them sell more cars, not because they are actual coupes. A good example of a proper/genuine coupe versus a saloon would be the Peugeot 406 and the Peugeot 406 Coupe. One is a saloon the other is an actual coupe (beautifully designed by Pininfarina)
@@johnmitchell2269 Yes but nowadays the word "coupe" gets thrown around in the car industry as a sort of synonym for "sporty". It's ironic how for example BMW makes coupes that are actually longer than the saloon they are based on. And of course you've even got manufacturers calling their 3 door hatchbacks "coupes" because they've put some 18" alloys and some fake vents on them.
This review was exactly what I expected to be, but I'm looking forward to the Panamera helping you to put it in context. I'd expect it to affirm your impressions
Jay, its a flop because its ugly and AMG make too many models now. Mercedes has milked the AMG moniker to the max, people are over it by now. They need less models, better looking designs and do away with AMG badging when the vehicle is not actually a true AMG! The same goes for the M Division of BMW. Less models, and do away with putting M's on cars just to justify higher prices! True petrolheads know what's going on with the badging and the general public don't care and can't afford the real McCoy cars.
Piece of advice, James - when viewing through exterior mounted GoPro cameras - you REALLY don't get ANY appreciable sense of speed or acceleration at all! These speed comments need to be partnered with accelerating from a dig, or very low speed, to create any kind of impact other than just the sound! Although your combining of multiple real-time and sequential content is otherwise exceptional and highly refreshing - as always!!
The issue is getting a camera low to the ground- if it's low then it feels fast. The problem as you may imagine is filming footage that looks fast, but isnt actually or it will get me in trouble. Also not all cars have suitable spaces to mount cameras where I want them
@@JayEmmOnCars Just make an appropriate face when flooring the car and we'd all get the impression of how fast it is. No need to bother with cameras ;) 😀
@@JayEmmOnCars - Absolutely! The reason I made this comment was only because you made a comment and appeared to back it up with the visual evidence - which wasn't at all convincing. It was the juxtaposition of the comment and the video not really matching that made me say something. In all other regards your videos can't be faulted! The change from low to high(er) speed would give a better contrast and we can then judge on our own just how quickly it changes - like a 0-60 shot for example? No illegal behaviour required, plus it doesn't need to be timed - every man and his dog does that - but it would give the visual contrast your comment implied.
I'm 35 years old, I've owned all sorts of fast/expensive stuff...owned a brand new Merc over a decade ago...this leaves me so cold, as does most new stuff. Maybe I'm just getting old but everything now days seems over sprung, too big, too turbocharged, with terrible steering...I've stopped buying new cars. I have five cars now and the newest was made in 2005. I don't think I'll buy anything newer.
Honestly, I don't know. I recently bought a second hand Peugeot 508 and within about half an hour, I had to pull over to turn off the beeping sound it made every time I went near an area that could have a speed camera in it. It baffles me to think that the previous owners could have driven that car with those noises for 10 years and 150 000 miles
Respect your reviews and knowledge, but I don’t agree. I had one of these for a couple of months, and I really rated it. It’s difficult (if not impossible) to find a car that’s a great all rounder, but the AMG GT 63 was the closest I’ve ever found. Drove it non stop from Gloucestershire to the North East and it was sublime. Also found it very playful on B roads. I will say that build quality was dire - like all modern Mercedes There you go, I guess we are all different.
How I long for the days when you put a key in the ignition, turned the a/c on or off, maybe put an electric window down but other than wipers or lights that was pretty much it,but if you wanted it switched on you switched it on,these modern cars can drive you crazy with bonging and automatic systems.
So its almost the size of an s class, but thats a better looking & more comfortable car. Its probably no quicker than an e63S in real world driving situations, & personally, i think the e63 is far better looking car & far more practical. Its heavily based on a cls, which is a better looking car but has no v8 option anymore, simply so they can make this. Yeah, this car is just pointless
AMG's version of a Gen 1 Panamera. They will need time to make it look better, just like Porsche did. EDIT: This thing has more bings and bongs then my 2021 Toyota Corolla Hybrid, that's sayin' something to those in the know.
While I'm sure what you say is true.... It is gorgeous to look at, and the interior is Beautiful. My phone is always beeping too so I can put up with that! I have driven a few Mercedes. Most seem to be flawed in the way they drive but they are stylish and make you feel good. I'd love to have it parked on my drive, that's for sure. :)
Another thing against this GT 4door is that its basically a E63S underneath, so why should one spend £50k more (or whatever it is) on a slightly different E63S, why not get a E63S estate/wagon?

Have seen quite a few of them on the road and its head turner
I prefer older cars 90% of the time, but I think this will age well, a lot better than say current BMWs. I think Mercedes is heading in the right direction. Can’t wait for the new SL, having a R129 SL600.
The big real question is?
Why would you buy it instead a Porsche Panamera or the... E63S AMG?
Coupaloon, love it, best way i've ever heard it described... Also i've not heard anyone mention Hale & Pace for many a year - now i'm feeling old...
the exhaust sounds like those videos where people have put a rubber balloon with a hole over their exhausts. sounds wet and loose vs the usual AMG rumble.
They would have a Ferrari 2+2 GT, except they now also want higher ride height and ground clearance.
[As Sniff Petrol doing his impression of John Peel]: And coming up in the studio today we have the new song from Turbocat Firebastard, "Coupaloon"
I feel that would fit well with the "Harry's Garage On Acid" idea
I would definitely watch Harry on Acid

M8 GC is far more desirable from where I'm sat. Do you have any plans to get yuor hands on one?
M850i GC is a good option too. Not as quick off the line as the M8 but sounds better.
The "cockpit" looks like a F-16 fighter plane!. Damn, that is very pleasant indeed!.
In France, Germany and Poland ive seen a lot of them. Most 53s but quit a lot of 63s. So the seem to sell well except in the uk
Doesn't even share the engine with the Coupe. M177 vs M178. That said it's a proper beast. E63 in a party frock.
Still the same engine family, that’s like saying the BMW M52 and M52TU are different when it’s just minor technical updates that separate them.
@@MrToastyman900 agreed, it's fundamentally just a wet sump version of the dry sump engine in the 2dr with different turbos. More badge engineering of an E63 than a 4dr version of the 2dr Coupe.
The car is basically staged while in drive to accelerate as quickly as possible and with this you can actually slam the throttle.
its my favourite amg. A future classic
“Sorry Jerry, I’ve turned your bongs off!”
Ooh er
Coupealoon is now a word for me. Thanks.
Nice homage to the E60 M5 Top Gear review.
What’s with the badge on the grille!? Looks like toy out of my daughters Happy Meal 🤨
If you're talking about the Mercedes star, it hides the adaptive cruise radar system
13.5mpg over the last 2000miles is (to my wallet thickness) bonkers.
Saw but one. In Knutsford. Drunk it in. Was impressed. Looked half it’s price but looked menacing in satin flat factory paint.
Hahaha! I have noticed that too! And it affects almost every expensive car.
Worst-sounding V8 ever. Your Maserati crushes this toad.
Hey Jay, real talk question here. Do you like the Kia Stinger more than this vehicle? If anything it would be a good comparison. Like the interior layout. Exterior design etc
The previous Mercedes CLS 63 Shooting brake is just so much better looking than the current AMG GT 4 door.
100%...... I should know..... I have one, also a 350 D Shooting Brake..... Awesome cars..... Easily Mercedes finest looking car along side the SLR and SLS
Flop in the UK, more like. They appear to be a lot more common in other parts of Europe. Saw a fair amount in Poland!
I've seen quite of few of these in Romania. It seems like every other realestate developer drives one (either this, or the lesser GT53 or GT43 models)
Living beyond their means, all for the show.
A "few"?.. Realestate "devrlopers" in Romania is a rebranding for former pimps, drug and people traffickers in order to launder black money. This car is a symbol for illiterate trafficants and idiots in Romania.
First warning bongs - to tell you bongs are turned on....
Second warning bongs - to tell you bongs are turned off.....
Imagine having that budget and buying that 😳
Such a dull looking car with the cheapest looking materials
The side vents are tacky and the plastic merc badge and black plastic under the grill is horrible
It’s just so ‘unseen’ I’ll want one when sub 50k. Interesting. Interesting car. I’m 44 I don’t hustle cars anymore unless in a raw Lotus. Sensible fast car. Ultra rare. I have the want
Had a chance to review this car last year, what a sexy beast and a magnificent bastard!
Also regarding the MPG gauge it's horrible in all Mercedes. They calculate it wrong especially when stopped. Best to check the old fashioned way.
For me, this thing is the V8 Mercedes equivalent of a Porsche Panamera Turbo S.
eHybrid Sport Turismo Coupe. 😅
James’ shirt reminds me of a Chemical Brother’s album cover
Not a fan of the body shape and style. The audi or bmw equivalents always catch my attention a lot more but I still do see this as a very nice car just not my taste
It's always irked me when manufacturers name their 4 door models as a coupe. It's not just Mercedes who do it, BMW do it as well. The definition of a coupe is a 2 door car. That's the main criteria for a coupe. But this model doesn't look that bad tbh, whereas the 4 door 2 series from BMW is an absolute monstrosity of a car that wins every ugly award going.
Mercedes started the trend with the cls.
16:36 that orange peel on £135k car is unacceptable in my opinion.
Modern technological garbage like this is why I appreciate my W210 E55
And that's why I love that car!
This review was exactly what I expected to be, but I'm looking forward to the Panamera helping you to put it in context. I'd expect it to affirm your impressions
😂🤣 “il shoot it if it keeps beeping at me”
The Amg gt 63s E performance comes out later this year....you have to test that, it’s partly hybrid so it’ll cover the turbo lag
Almost bought this car, thanks for your honest review.
In my humble opinion, Italians do it better on these fields. A Ferrari FF or a Maserati Quattroporte or even a Gran Turismo do it better.
Although your combining of multiple real-time and sequential content is otherwise exceptional and highly refreshing - as always!!
great advice, i was thinking the same. The exterior mounted cameras are good for sound only.
The scary driving experience reminds me of my old Torana SL/R 5000. Must be the colour...
"AMG GT 63 S 4MATIC PLUS" - sounds like the name of a washing machine.
"You'll be identified by your dental records" 🤣🤣🤣
I'm probably never going to afford something like this in my lifetime, and yet I can't understand who they made this car for.
This is an e-class estate with another body.
I’ve been in one of these in Slovakia back in 2019.
There are loads of these in Bratislava. Just go anywhere in the city center and you will see one
@@s.c9004 I was in one near Trenčín.
It looks amazing in and out tho
How did Jerry not turn those bongs off the day he bought the car?!
@@nasen2727 People can be oblivious to those things, which is baffling to me as well. I don't like those people.
Maybe you have to do it manually every time you start the car
Probably because it’s buried in the preposterous infotainment sub-menus.
He's probably 75 and can't hear them
Respect your reviews and knowledge, but I don’t agree.
I will say that build quality was dire - like all modern Mercedes
There you go, I guess we are all different.
Excellent video 📹
Objective review
I can't absorb anything you are saying Jay, ........ im hypnotised by that shirt!
The turbocat firebastard does look an understated beast
How I long for the days when you put a key in the ignition, turned the a/c on or off, maybe put an electric window down but other than wipers or lights that was pretty much it,but if you wanted it switched on you switched it on,these modern cars can drive you crazy with bonging and automatic systems.
Cars from before 2010 are that
So its almost the size of an s class, but thats a better looking & more comfortable car. Its probably no quicker than an e63S in real world driving situations, & personally, i think the e63 is far better looking car & far more practical. Its heavily based on a cls, which is a better looking car but has no v8 option anymore, simply so they can make this. Yeah, this car is just pointless
The only thing wrong with this car is that I can't afford one.
AMG's version of a Gen 1 Panamera. They will need time to make it look better, just like Porsche did.
EDIT: This thing has more bings and bongs then my 2021 Toyota Corolla Hybrid, that's sayin' something to those in the know.
Not a fan of the fake fender side vents. Also, I prefer the previous CLS, especially the Shooting Brake.
so how does this compare to the BMW M6 Gran Coupe?
"Introducing the Kia Turbocat Fire Bastard..."
Another thing against this GT 4door is that its basically a E63S underneath, so why should one spend £50k more (or whatever it is) on a slightly different E63S, why not get a E63S estate/wagon?
Im actually surprised its 5m long, I've never seen on in the metal and from any pictures I've seen it looks small. Really want to see one now
