Physiotherapy Reflux Exercises to STOP Heartburn | Breathing Exercises proven to REDUCE ACID REFLUX

  • Physiotherapist Michelle guides you through four reflux exercises scientifically proven to reduce heartburn, acid reflux and the need for acid reflux (antacid) medication. These abdominal breathing exercises are a natural remedy for reflux. They reduce upward pressure from the stomach and may strengthen muscles that stop acid rising.
Acid reflux causes heartburn and is caused by acid rising from the stomach into the food tube. This acid burns the tissue lining the food tube (oesophagus).
    Common Causes of Acid Reflux
    1. Upward pressure from the belly e.g. holding your abdominal muscles tensed or wearing a tight belt which causes acid to rise up into the food tube (oesophagus).
    2. Lack of closing pressure in the barrier at the top of the stomach that stops acid rising. This closing pressure is normally provided by the valve or muscular ring (lower esophageal sphincter or LES) above the stomach.
Always discuss prescribed medication changes with your doctor before changing
If you feel lightheaded or dizzy stop the breathing exercises and resume when recovered. This can happen if you’re accustomed to upper chest breathing rather than abdominal breathing.
Step 1 - Setting Up for Breathing Exercises
*Loosen your belt or remove tight fitting clothing from around your waist
    * Correct sitting position for abdominal breathing exercises:
    - Hips and knees approximately 90 degrees
    - Feet flat knees slightly apart
    - Sit with weight even between both sit bones
    - Normal curve in low back
    - Chest slightly raised
    - Lift up through the crown of your head and bring your chin inwards slightly
    - Relax your shoulders
Do these breathing exercises when calm and relaxed.
Breathing Exercise 1 (diaphragmatic or abdominal breathing)
Rest your right hand on your chest bone and left hand on your upper belly. Breathe in and out slowly through your nose. Breathe in slowly and keep the upper most hand still. You should only feel your lower hand moving in and out as you breathe .
    Resisted Breathing Exercise 2 (Progression)
Press gently with both hands to resist the outward movement of your belly as you breathe in so your breathing muscles need to work harder.
    Breathing Exercise 3
Place both hands on your sides, at the level of your lower rib cage. Wrap your hands around the sides of your ribcage. Breathe in slowly and deeply just as for breathing exercise No.1.
When you breathe in, first your stomach moves forwards and then your hands move out sideways as your ribs expand keeping your chest relaxed. Let the breathe release slowly from your lungs.
    Resisted Breathing Exercise 4 (Progression)
Press your hands slightly against your sides when you breathe in to prevent your lower rib cage from expanding outwards to the sides. Start with your belly moving forwards. There is no need to press the ribs too firmly. If you start moving your chest forwards, stop the exercise and start again.
How many exercises and how often
    * Do the exercises daily
    * Perform up to 10 breathing exercises in a row starting with exercises 1 and 3
    * Progress to resisted breathing exercises 2 and 4
    * Repeat up to 10 exercises in a row according to your comfort levels
When to do these breathing exercises
    * Do the exercises before reflux occurs rather than after it has started
    - Before eating 3 times a day
    - 10 minutes after eating
    - If you notice you feel stressed or you are bracing your abdominal muscles
    * Don't wait until you feel acid reflux burning or heartburn to start your exercises
    * These reflux exercises are not an instant reflux fix and may only be effective as long as you continue them.

By June 2022 my throat was so swollen and inflamed by stomach acid rising up to my mouth and burning my upper throat when I slept that I had been struggling to breathe for weeks and eating was a worrying and very difficult experience - this caused by a hiatus hernia. Since practising these exercises 3 times each day (10 repetitions of each ) the stomach acid is now completely suppressed allowing my throat to make a full recovery - I can now breathe easily again ! I was taking lansoprazole whilst at my worst with no imorovement but it was only a few days after starting these breathing techniques that my suffering relented. You are a miracle worker, I am grateful beyond words.

After dealing with shortness of breath and other symptoms of Laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) for several months my prayers were answered and I stumbled on this video. (I first found the article she mentioned which looked promising but did not describe the exercises and searched RUclips for the exercises) I am 69 and very active. I had a lower back injury in my early 20s and the medical professionals at that time told me after I recovered to strengthen my core, and I have done this. I do strenuous abdominal exercises regularly, as well as other core and upper body exercises, run, go on rigorous bike rides, etc. Consequently, my abdominal muscles stay pretty tight and I had unknowingly become a shallow breather, using upper shoulder and chest muscles, not my diaphragm to fill my lungs. I did at least 5 sets of 10 each of the exercises demonstrated in the video yesterday and last night I was able to sleep for the first time in many months. THANK YOU! AND PLEASE PUT THE ADDITIONAL EXERCISES PRESENTED IN THE ARTICLE YOU MENTIONED ON A VIDEO.

Thank you for this video. I've had acid reflux for the last 2 weeks straight, after every meal. I tried everything and eventually started taking PPI's, although I knew this wasn't a long term solution and wanted to get off them as soon as possible.
I started your exercises yesterday evening before dinner and this morning before my first meal (no PPIs in my system) and I have ZERO reflux.
I realized that I'd stopped doing my regular 20-30 minute yoga and instead I've been weight training which I believe led to a weakening of my diaphragm - never skipping breath work again. Thank you.

Wow the fact these exercises exist blows my mind! It flies in the face of growing up learning we are to tighten our core muscles at all times to stay perpetually toned, but with that having been ingrained in my mind for over 20 years and the state I’ve progressed to with debilitating digestive issues, it tells me this habit can do major damage to the internal processes, acting as a mental corset! Thank you for shining light on this and I pray I can be healed from this wretched malady!

Genius. I had pain in chest, back and head after eating avocado toast and sweet potato. Did these exercises and it released something. Hi Michele thanks for this video.I just found your video.I am suffering from erosive gastrisis since past one year. The symptoms recur and I feel helpless in those days I think due to acidity I am having spasm in my back and shoulder which become unbearable sometime. Please suggest some exercise for this also.

Thank you for these breathing exercises. I had mild acid reflux, then my GI doc suggested an endoscopy to check for potential cancer. No cancer detected BUT he put me on a prescription PPI for 3 months. My hoarseness (which had been my only symptom!) improved while on the med. After finishing the 3 months , I had the WORST reflux I’ve ever had. I’m still trying to decrease it, diet, elevated head of the bed, but no meds. It’s marginally better after 5 months but I even feel burning in my ears. Before the endoscopy and med I had absolutely no burning. I’m really hoping these exercises help! Have you heard of resistance training also for this? I read an article where the technique was to swallow food while having the head, and thus the Lower esophageal sphincter below the stomach. The gentleman did it 68 days and realized his reflux had improved, and after 5 months, he no longer needs his wedge for sleeping and he feels cured. I’m going to try that as well.

So it’s like eating upside down? Or laying down with your head lower than stomach? It seems like it would make things worse. I wonder why it helped. 🤔

Hi Jenny, I found that stopping PPIs cold turkey doesn't work but causes a rebound. You have to taper off the meds over a month or so, lessening the amount each week. I healed my stomach of gastritis using the Acid Watcher's Diet by Dr. Aviv using the meds and then tapered off. Unfortunately, I still have a silent reflux vapor (pepsin) that is able to come up while I lay down, even with not eating 3-5 hrs in the evening. I prop myself up to sleep at night with multiple pillows and a blowup wedge. If I slip down, my throat, ears, sinuses, back of eyes hurt. It is not a happy state to be in. My gastro instructions are to do these type of breathing exercises (of which I am just now going to try consistently)take the alginate Gaviscon nightly(from UK which has no aluminum) and 20 mg of Pepcid AC. I take the Pepcid AC regularly at dinner only and Gaviscon here and there. DGL helps in the evenings too. I also am now seeing a functional medicine nutritional dietitian due to having a problem now with processing oil and sugars. She has put me on a gluten and dairy free diet for 6 wks. I am adding in some of the maintenance level acid foods here and there. Sigh. I understand completely and am so sorry both of us are going through this.
I also did read about that gentlemen in the scientific journals of his own experience trying to strengthen his LES. I meant to try it, but havent yet. haha. Good luck. You may msg me. Blessings.

@@sbee985 wow! That’s so rough! I’ve only had this for a brief while and my gastroenterologist wanted to put me on meds for it and I didn’t want them because I heard they wreck all sorts of things and can’t be used long term. I wonder what these doctors think a person is supposed to do then. I hope I can figure this out because it keeps getting worse and I’m being quite careful about everything I eat. I hadn’t been walking after every meal though. I just started to today because I didn’t know before. It didn’t seem to help but maybe it will.
I’m sleeping propped up too and I hate it. I found the article too and was surprised there was no follow up research. I have a hiatal hernia so I wondered if it would work for me. My hiatal hernia is only like 1cm I think. I had an endoscopy to find out. The gastroenterologist said it wasn’t very big do I wouldn’t need surgery but had no real solutions.
It’s amazing with such a common problem how little research has been done and how few solutions there are. Also annoying is that the most helpful things I’ve found were things from the Internet. Not from my gastroenterologist.
For me this all began the day I ate a bunch of kumquats and Maine gooseberries. I had only the slightest symptoms before then.
Anyways, I’m glad you wrote your comment because it reminded me to do the breathing exercises. I’m really grateful for these comments sections!

I’m glad you’d like to see them E&R - I have them prepped. It’s been very challenging to access these exercises, I believe part of the effectiveness is to do with the relaxation of the abdomen - try to be conscious of tension in your upper tummy throughout the day too. All the best!
