It was this gig that persuaded me to leave the commune I was living in, drop out of art college and get a degree in business management. Today I'm the third largest producer of patio furniture in north Dorset.
I'm very heartened to hear you've at least achieved something in this so-called 'society' of 'ours'. Instead of saving up your vital bodily fluids and donating them to the 'Temple', you worked hard and made a real contribution to real lives. This may be to merely contribute to patio-based leisure comfort across that wonderful corner of southern england where toyah and robert fripp live, but at least you have paid taxes and not waste time on filth and indulgent whimsy in this so-called 'industrial world' where we all have to get along with each other.
Wish I had been around at this time. I like all kinds of music, from hip hop to indie rock to ambient to electronic and everywhere in between. But I find myself especially fascinated by Throbbing Gristle and everything they did/stood for.
Greg Lytmer I saw them, even took my mom.1981, Culver City, California, Veterans Hall. They were doing their own sound, also had a projection screen behind them, they played for one hour, and, left us wanting more, and, slightly in shock. They were as friendly as you’d imagine. Mums thought they were an “acquired taste”.
+ushersan SPK played that night just before this gig with Chris, Cosey and Peter Christophersen, i can imagine it was a life-changer to be in this many layered soundcloud with collages of prayers from the english master-magician Aleister Crowley. A modern way of celebrating the english pagan heritage, I would say ;-)

Pioneers, legends, a twat, art, not art... TG sure opened doors to many (myself included) but for the life of me, what would a title like "Murder Of Thee Abyss" refer to exactly...?! Or "Tokyo Summer"...?! Not sure there's any deeper meaning behind it, sounding more like titles thrown in at the very last minute... just sayin' :)
.I love TG and believe that they have something to say to every intelligent music lover who is fed up with mass media, mainstream music and mass conumption.
You were wrong but what a good idea - in guess it would have been tremendous to see TG live in a stadium. It never occurred to me. TG doin Wembley with a powerful PA. Wrecking civilization 115 yds all around.
TG was one of my early influences , this early stuff was truly a spiritual experience , and for me still is. The first time I heard hamburger lady my 3rd eye was opened hahahah , yeah it was quite an experience to say the least . 👍
It's sad that this kind of sonic art is hard to come by now. Up until 95ish there were still groups that I had the pleasure of seeing that did this sorta thing. Now, I would love to take my son he gets it but there is nothing but watered down moments if at all.
@a w I don't understand why anyone would make this kind of music today. It's just a retread. All the notions and constructs about "what is music" were shattered long ago. Even TG were late to the party. Cage, Stockhausen, Sun Ra, Coltrane, Ornette Coleman, Edgard Varèse, etc. already showed what was possible with sound. TG used intellectual concept to make up for lack of musical ideas. Anyone could make this noise.
@a w I couldn't agree more. I don't see the point in anyone polluting the musical landscape at this point. I believe in making music at home or with friends for fun and therapy but beyond that? I think you're out of touch.
I would suggest checking out Author & Punisher - Beastland album. A one man band, who literally built awesome machines so he could play his music us them. My personally favorite is Nihil Strength. Extreme electronic music is alive and kicking. 👌😁👍
Yes dearest, to experiment with the functionality of sound was a key aspect of TG's musical exploration, ... from Musique Concrete to Industrial Music.

@@NikkiDocherty74 ;-) Aldous signed his Book Island for Dr. Hofmann, in 1962, with the words: "To Albert Hofmann, the inventor of the true moksha-medicine" - the drug-like soma, that his book Island is about.

I had RAFTERS in high school. And overhearing it in my room, wow, worked like a charm--my parents looked at me like a subhuman (in fleeting glances)
Thanks for uploading this. I've never seen this footage before. Fantastic TG performance/psychic rally.

Those are some massive sounds coming from such a tiny stage! When I first heard their live recordings I always imagined stadium sized venues.

My suggestion would be to get some instruments and make some sounds together.

wow, thanks for this amazing upload.
I like the picture of Aldous Huxley. It was used on the cover of the book 'Rapid Eye' Vol 0ne. It led to me building my first 'Dream machine' :-)

Why isn't this group in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame??
They are not rock, I assume
That is for the commercially successful .
Because Hall of Fame SUCKs?
