Laine said he would like a "fresh start", so in that sense, I feel like Utah would make the most sense for him. Fresh start at a fresh team, and then see where it goes from there... and also because I don't think most teams are going to want to touch Laine with a ten foot pole with his current salary, but maybe, maybe. Wish my fellow Finn good luck wherever he ends up.

Tbh the reason Laine put up big numbers in wpg is he was a 2nd liner and sheltered.
Plus Blue jackets don't have players to shelter him with a bunch of young guys and what? Jenner ?
    Here he had
    Prime
    Wheeler Scheifele Connor
    Laine Little Ehlers
    Copp Lowry Roslovic
    Perreault
And when Little couldn't play we had Stastny. The jackets have no where near that.
If he goes anywhere with a top Center like Aho ect he will be a good player again.

Laine is a scoring freak when he is properly fed. When he was with Winnipeg, we let him live in his house and fed him the puck. He wasnt a play maker, defensivly he was...well not so much. But if he is supported properly he can get lots of goals. I was sad to see him go and our power play hasnt been the same since. It was sad to watch him flounder in Columbus. Hope he does well in his next role. I think he would fit in nicely with Carolina. Of course i would love to see him come back! I cant see him doing well in Boston. Weird fit.

    Let’s Go Jackets.
I firmly believe it will be Laine and a third going one way, and a guy worth 4m and a 2nd coming back.
The cap space going up about 4.5m allows for a guy to come back and for us to not have to just eat money, without the other team having to move a big player.

  • @DneilB007
    @DneilB007 2 месяца назад

Regardless of which team gets Laine, the trade *will* include a first round pick. It will probably be a conditional pick based on either games played or goals scored, so if he doesn’t come back like Laine of old his new team is covered. Because of the conditions, it’s likely that any pick coming back would be from the 2025 or 2026 drafts.
As for the rest of the return, maybe a B or C tier prospect and an inefficient contract, preferably a defensive player.
Maybe a trade built around Nurse-Laine (although a player like Nurse coming back probably completely voids my earlier comment about a first rounder) could work.

I realize it's a very diminutive point to make, but...Patrik Laine is more (when he is himself and thriving) than just numbers and the #1 one timer shot on the planet. He brought friggin Magic to the NHL the first couple of seasons. The stuff that fans want to see. Sure, he seems to have some personal issues, but could one also argue it's too bad the league as a whole could not effectively administer such a unique talent?
Heck do I know, I'm just a lowly Finnish hockey fan :D (since the 1960's). The only team sport in the world that keeps me awake through the whole game. :D Will be really interesting to follow what's going to happen with Laine next season, if I live. Seems to me Utah would be a "fresh start", indeed. :) He needs a good playmaker as a linesmate to feed him, though - that much is clear...

@ST-TV Why wouldn't they? Is Palat so bad that Columbus wouldn't? Devils do it cause the player doesn't fit a need now and the reason the Devils got Palat in the first place was for his "experience ", which after 3 years, I haven't seen any of that show, frankly. The NHL is a business, look at the VGK, and how ruthless they run an organization, so again, my question, is why wouldn't they look into it? If Columbus can envision Palat with their team, both teams help each other out.

@@johnsumner8487 Palat is 33 hasn't been worth his contract for the last 3 years and is only getting worse year by year. By taking him from the Devils Jackets would be doing NJ a favour. You don't do favours to your rivals for free. So if that is the deal Laine for Palat, NJ has to include their #10 pick as well. Most likely they won't thus the deal wont happen.

Yeah, that's true. You don't help a rival for nothing, so the Devils would add a player/ prospect into the mix, but just as you said Palat is 33 and not the same player, well the Devils are taking a gamble too. They would be investing in Laine who's been a shell of his early yrs. Are the Devils getting the Laine from his Winnipeg days OR his Columbus days? So this trade is not one sided. All this is to say that trading Laine to NJ is a possibility as both sides could work out a deal.

@@johnsumner8487 I have 0 idea where people come up with this "Laine is a shell of his former self." narrative. ANYONE who has actually seen him play for the last 3 years would not think that. Just by looking at the stats you can see that the narrative is BS. He had 2 very good seasons on a terrible blue jackets team. So my only theory is that people don't actually watch him play, they just spread the narrative they want. This season he was headshot in game 3, missed significant time, came back and got injured again a month later and that was his season. So it's not a question of "do you get the Laine of Winnipeg or Columbus?" It doesn't matter wich one you get, you get exelent player regardless.
If the team that is trading for him think they get a guy who will just sit on LTIR he just won't be traded. Columbus doesn't NEED to trade him. They have the space to keep him if there isn't a proper deal to be made.
