Ford Transit Propshaft Centre Bearing Replacement - start to finish

  • In this video I replace the propshaft centre support bearings on my MK5 Ford Transit. It's a relatively straight forward job that can be done at home with basic tools. Feel free to use this video as a guide for replacing them yourself. I recommend using decent bearings to prevent having to repeat the job after only a few hundred miles potentially.

    This vid is just what "the doctor ordered" hahahah! On my way to do exactly the same and wondered what to expect. Thanks to your vid I now know it might be better to do it in the shop in stead of underneath. Another way of getting the old bearing/housing off, is just grind it through but not to the part where it gets risky, just keep off 2mm and tap that in two with a big hammer. Nothing to loose!
    I always swear and curse a lot with these kind of jobs cause I can't comprehend why the designers did not come up with something more servicable, just a few millimeters more space arount nuts, a bit more easy to use standard tools?! Noooooo, they make it so crappy you need adapted tools and therefore lots of people will take it to the garage, bloody hell.
    This is a couple of hours later and I succeeded!!! Very happy with finally a job that did not go wrong on any part, did it all below the van! Used a cob-light (I can really recommend that!) and got everything done. That trick with the crowbar was clever, used that too. Used the big (50cm) torque-wrench to undo the bolts to the diff but looking back, that was not neccesary. Got a spanner on a torque bit to undo the support from the chassis.
    So often these jobs cost far more time than you'd like, but this time it all went in a jiffy! Many thanks again

      Serviceable!? What!?? It should cost $1000-$2000 or better still buy a new van and send the old one to landfill! Jokes, man, I love fixing stuff! So much these days made to be disposable.

    Failed my DOE on my transit only yesterday because of worn prop shaft bearings! Thanks for the great Video and going through the process step by step.

    Half way off with mine and decided to take off fully like you. Good to see it all the way through and yes those bolts to diff are FT, and yes I have had to grind a spanner down, what a PIA. Finishing off tomorrow. Thanks for video

    Just a little advice for pressing bearings on. Always use an even amount of pressure around the bearing from a socket-like device , bits of old pipe or a carefully machined bit are the way to go.

      Yep, that was painful to watch, along with the open ender on the nuts. WHy not renew the U/j's after all that effort to get the prop off. Two minutes with the impact driver on each nut - job done, massive time saving.

      Thanks for the recommendations guys, I will take it on board for next time. Regarding replacing the U/j’s they aren’t a simple replacement on the mk5 transit and needs to be changed by a prop specialist because they are crimped on.

    Good video I did this today hand to use power bar though to loosen the bolts they were welded 😅

    id recommend marking the splines on both mating ends as if you dont it could cause an imbalance in ur driveshaft furthermore causing vibrations.

    I havent ever taken that diff joint off when i been changing the prop shaft bearings, reason is, the prop shaft has enough play usually to not have to bother, you can just undo the bearings, and as it drops down from the van, it slides the universal joints apart, i got to do that job right now for this years mot
    Also, the prop shafts are usually keyed so you cant put them back in the wrong way

    Those T40 bearing carrier bolts are a pain. I changed mine for hex head bolts - makes your life easier next time you have to do it.

    Just about to do this job my self. Only bit I’m not sure of is if the horseshoe washer has to be put in a certain way. It seems to have a slight bend to it and one side has a small indentation and the other side has a little circle that sticks out 1 or 2 mm. was going to arachnid a pic here but don’t think you can. I’m confident with rest of job, just that little detail. Thanks for your vid 👍

      Worked it out now, the 2mm bit that sticks up is to push the washer up so it can be bent round the nut, I can now get this job done, thanks

    Hi buddy I am a new subscriber I’ve got a W reg transit mini bus the last one they made before face lift but the thing is I was watching the one were you changed the oil in your diff on watching it I noticed you have got a stabiliser and link bars on the back going across your diff have you put it on your self did it come like it Seeing yours now making me think my diff might be off an older model old is gold never give up

      Hey man, thanks for the sub. My van has a ‘G’ type axel (6 wheel studs and octagonal rear diff cover) I think this type has the rear antiroll bar as standard. Sounds like you may have the ‘H’ type axel (5 studs and circular diff cover) I’m not 100% sure if that axle has the rear antiroll bar, that could be the difference.

      Thank you mate, It will be a different prop shaft but the process of changing the centre bearings will be very similar

    Have you got any advice on how to uprate an alternator for the banana engine for my camper please

      Hello mate, what size is the alternator you currently have. I’ve heard that it may be possible to add a second alternator but have never seen it before 🤔 worth having a look on the Facebook forums to see if anybody has done it. I have a split charge from the standard alternator to the leisure batteries and it does the job fine. I believe mine is a 95amp so you could upgrade to that if yours is the smaller one.

      I just assumed that they were standard size until you upgrade them so I will have to check what size mine is,my ex always told me bigger is better .

    My propshaft hanger bearing needs replacing too. I saw the one in your link is 30mm. Can i ask the diameter you selected? Mine seems to be 45mm but i am unsure. Any help much appreciated.

      I think the mk4 has 45mm bearing and mk5 30mm. It could also be 45mm on the mk5 if it has a mk4 prop fitted.

      I got the OE number off it. 95vb-4826-aa. Actually think it might be the same part you ordered. I will order two Febi Bilstein too and do both like yourself. Seems better quality.

    I did my bearings about a month ago. What an absolute pig. Everything fought me. Almost all Torques bolts rounded off so had to remove the whole bracket then weld and remove them once out. Broke two of the flange bolts gearbox side. Luckily there are six holes on the flange and the bolts that broke where in a position I could just rotate it and use the other holes wasn't in the mood for drilling them out. The splines wouldn't seperate. the bearings wouldn't pull off so had to grind them off.

      my t40 have been replaced by a 10 and 13mm and I've rounded them off. :(

      @Marc Laurens that’s annoying mate, did you manage to sort it? you could cut a slot in the hex head and try use a large flat blade screwdriver.

      @@TurnersWorkshop97 sprayed it with plus gas, went and got a blow torch, heated them up managed to undo them with irwin vise grip mole grips . had to really apply a lot of grip strength to get the jaws to close and grip the bolt. one of the bolts seemed to have red loctite the other didn't. one stayed very tight for a longvtime , creaking with every movement. how do they get like that? is it weight of prop shaft and vibrations? I've seen vibrations unwind nuts and bolts. I screwed the bolts back up a bit to hold prop til tomorrow, I broke/loosened the four diff bolts . tomorrow will have to loosen the 17" nut and remove the piece that holds prop together. need to buy 2 new bolts. what M are they would you say ? 6

      Nice one, you’re halfway there :) I’m pretty sure they are m8 bolts for the carrier brackets. I would replace with new hex heads 👍🏼

      Hey, I can’t say for sure but I think they’re different. The ones on ours are pressed in so might be a job for a prop specialist. Have you checked the Haynes manual?

    Informative but quite misleading video, in my case the bearings on my van had never been changed, so the prop shaft was seized onto the universal joint. I ended up having to use two blow torches to heat the yoke on the universal joint and then hammer it off the prop. This may not be the case with every van. But I don’t want anyone else to make the same mistake I did, by assuming it would go as smoothly as it does in the video, I ended up spending most of the day on the job

      Thanks for sharing your experience. Trust me I did struggle to get the prop flange separated from the gearbox! 😅 but didn’t include that in the video or else it would have been a very long video 😂👍🏼 it’s meant as a guide. Problems will occur when doing this kind of work every now and then. You’ve gotta give it a go or you will never know, it’s not always going to be easy😁

    What symptoms did you have to change mate. My mk7 transit has like a whinning noise from around this area. I've looked at my bearings and looks like they haven't been replaced since van was made.

      It’s worth changing them then, I just noticed that the rubber supports had perished on mine. If yours is whining it could also be coming from the diff if changing the prop bearings doesn’t make it go away 👍🏼

    Hi when they go is it a clunking noise when changing gear? I keep getting clunking wonder whether it's the prop shaft cheers

      It’s worth checking the prop bearings but equally it could be gearbox/ clutch/ diff related if it’s when changing gear

    Does make a Whining noise when they are going ?

      They can make all kinds of noises, if the rubber has perished and the bearings is loose it might make a thumping sound where the prop isn’t secured in the mount. If the bearings are failing then it’s more of a squeaking or grumbling sound. Whining could be coming from gearbox or diff maybe?

      If the prop shaft is original to the van, mk4s are 45mm mk5s are 30mm I believe 😊
