Probably was spies or a spy who lost contact with their handler named Kenneth. To get in touch with him, they needed a new frequency. So they beat up a news man while asking the question and he reported on it. Then Kenneth would know he needs to get in touch with his boys.

In 1972 when I was 5 my 18 year old brother died tragically. It turned our family upside down. Fast forward to the mid 90s. I was transitioning into a desperate mentalcase. The frequency of any radio signal can never be a secret. You can find any frequency of any transmission with basic test equipment (spectrum analyser). The signal itself tells you its frequency, there is no way of hiding it. You can encrypt transmissions, that has nothing to do with the frequency however.
Monster is a great album. I remember when it came out, and always wondered what the reference was about. I must have missed Dave Letterman the night R.E.M. was on. Odd, because I was a kid in the 80s when the attack happened, an adult when the album came out, and frequently watched Dave, and I missed the whole thing. We really didn't have the internet the same as today, and information was harder to find.
it was cave man times before the internet, it's crazy that most take the internet for granted and many even disparage it and claim life was better before
I used to quote this all the time to a cousin who never followed the news at all and has never heard this. I didn’t know about the REM song, but I do remember Weekend Update from SNL reporting about this and showing the identity of the attackers being Tom Brokaw and Peter Jennings.
@jime6688 am I the only one who remembers this phrase being part of a news blooper? It was something that went live on air when it wasn't supposed to, and the newscaster was trying to set his earpiece to the right frequency, so he was asking this crew person, Kenneth, what the frequency was. I would swear that's what happened. I don't remember this attack on Dan Rather at all.
What an interesting case. You’ve done a stellar job presenting this case. Loved your no nonsense reporting and your lovely accent. 😊 I’m gonna subscribe. I really enjoyed myself here ❤
I think Kenneth's frequency is either 1000 MHz or 4 GHz. Since the event occurred in 1986 and Kenneth used a satellite receiver instead of a regular TV antenna, it is likely the TV signal came from the Soviet Molniya satellite network. Conveniently, the Molniya orbit despite being designed for coverage for the Soviet Union, also provide a pretty decent coverage for the US (maybe not 24 hour coverage, but should be very close). However the satellite only broadcast the signal in narrow cone, to actually receive the signal, one would also have to hijack the satellite's telemetry signal and manipulate its the onboard transmitter. As the Molniya series satellites receive telemetry signal at 1000 MHz, and broadcast TV signal at around 3.4 to 4.1 GHz, the answer to the question must be either of the two. This theory should also be fairly easy to verified by comparing the footage from the received TV program with the footage from the Soviet Orbita television network, as the only Soviet TV program broadcasting over satellite at the time is the Orbita television network.
The Soviet theory is highly unlikely. Espionage isn’t usually conducted thru random violent attacks, no spy would try to extract information in that way, it’s stupid on its face. Secondly, the Soviet’s would’ve set rhe frequency they broadcast at, there’s no reason for them to ask what is the frequency they are themselves broadcasting on.
I've just found your channel and have to say you are doing a fantastic job. I never actually knew the story and have been a huge REM fan since the 90s but live in Ireland. Love the channel and you have a new subscriber. ❤

Great video! One very small small nitpicky thing: Like A Velvet Glove was actually released as a serialized story in Dan Clowes's Eightball between 1989 and early 1993. It was later released in graphic novel form in 1993.
You know what struck me. That guy who went to prison and told staff he was from the future, how close that was to the plot of the movie 12 monkeys. Hahaha and did anyone ever just try simply asking that guy who the other fella was?

The 2nd attacker hasn't been identified...why not just ask Tager? He was with the guy. Its not like they randomly met while walking down the street. Interesting video as always!
I had no idea. Thanks, well done! The only thing missing is the attacker's history or medical background ? The other interesting thing is, upon release from prison, he had a lot of restrictions. However, his restrictions did not address fire arms. If he is allowed to own a fire arm of any kind, we could have a big problem.
I was working in Philadelphia on the police department and we had several smart asses copying this crime and repeating that comment. They were mostly street muggers and were doing it for the sake of just causing havoc. I doubt any of them were a part or involved with Dan Rather’ incident. It was however believed by most detectives that there was a lot more to this story in NYC than revealed. Not that Mr. Rather knew anything about it, but the perpetrators did. I think it they, the detectives, were correct. Mistaken identity maybe. Who really knows besides the people who committed the assault?

For people curious about why Soviet TV broadcasts were difficult to receive, here's a snippet from a news article: "A major obstacle was tracking the signals from the Soviet satellites. There are four, and the satellites are not stationary like American communication satellites; they orbit continually in a loop high above the earth. A programmed computer instructs the 11-foot dish antenna at Columbia to track the signals. Other problems that were overcome included modifying the received video signals to accommodate the Russian color system (which, according to Mr. Schaffer, produces better color than the American) and decoding Soviet sound."
Cool photo of Game Theory (band) - their song is from the 'Lolita Nation' double LP - many fans consider that album a masterpiece - (also, they were passing acquaintances with REM, and REM's early producer, Mitch Easter, produced many Game Theory albums)..

Inspired rock songs, and possibly a movie, too - Twelve Monkeys.
woah woah woah, back up the truck. Gonna need to pause the video right here and find this Dan Rather/REM performance.
I knew about the rough lines of the story. Thanks for clarifying it up. Very good delivery
OP... you have no idea what you just did for me. Thank you.
Excellent video, 10 out of 10.
So interesting! Keep making content because you will be a very popular channel once people find you!
Your channel is awesome I can't believe I've just discovered it today
10:05 It was quite a while ago, but I am pretty sure that when I watched TV in USSR in the mid 80s, there were no soap operas or cooking shows.
I put this up there with the snarling rabbit who attacked Jimmy Carter's rowboat on a pond on his Plains, GA home. Newsmen were present for this event, unlike the Dan Rather incident.
Or with the cannibals that ate Joe Biden’s uncle.
Lol, talk about sending people down 'rabbit holes'. Thanks, I had no idea of this crazy bit.
Wow, I’ve never heard of this story!!

Yes, I remember it also. But I don't ever remember a second guy being involved, only the one man.
Probably was spies or a spy who lost contact with their handler named Kenneth. To get in touch with him, they needed a new frequency. So they beat up a news man while asking the question and he reported on it. Then Kenneth would know he needs to get in touch with his boys.
Isn't he?b🙄
Well this was unexpectedly most interesting thing I've seen on YT in a couple of months or so. Sometimes the algorithm giveth, even if the video isn't even remotely new.
It's so unfortunate that this channel hasn't received more attention. Hopefully that will change soon.

In 1972 when I was 5 my 18 year old brother died tragically. It turned our family upside down. Fast forward to the mid 90s. I was transitioning into a desperate mentalcase. Seeking knowledge and my lost brother Kenny. REMs What's the frequency Kenneth impacted me powerfully. I wanted to know what happened to Kenny. And I through bitter tears shouted out those lyrics. Like somehow I could contact my brother.

As always, thank you so much for the subtitles! Very bizarre story as well, perfect for Halloween!
I never knew there was a follow-up after the Rather attack. Or if I did, I had forgotten. Good stuff.
I used to quote this all the time to a cousin who never followed the news at all and has never heard this.
I didn’t know about the REM song, but I do remember Weekend Update from SNL reporting about this and showing the identity of the attackers being Tom Brokaw and Peter Jennings.
😂
Yes, I remember Peter Jennings saying this to someone on his crew during a broadcast uplink.
That was a funny skit. 😂
What an interesting case. You’ve done a stellar job presenting this case. Loved your no nonsense reporting and your lovely accent. 😊 I’m gonna subscribe. I really enjoyed myself here ❤
Why didn’t he just tell them the frequency?
He's selfish, and he wants it all.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
@@nicksweeney5176😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
because he wasnt kenneth
Cause he was misgendered
This theory should also be fairly easy to verified by comparing the footage from the received TV program with the footage from the Soviet Orbita television network, as the only Soviet TV program broadcasting over satellite at the time is the Orbita television network.

interesting, thnx
What??? You for real???
@deeboy7448 realer than you'll ever know
The Soviet theory is highly unlikely.

The real crime was that R.E.M.’s What’s The Frequency Kenneth? Only reached #21 on the charts…

I never knew they'd made that song. I've heard all rock groups are compromised and not even creating or singing their own music. Donald Marshall relates this in his videos about when he worked in the cloning centers where the celebrities are brought nightly. Really evil stuff.

One time in the mid 70s in Manhattan, my mom was walking down Broadway in midtown when a limo screeched up to the curb and Dan Rather hopped out and tried very aggressively/over-confidently tried to pick her up for a date. He obviously wasn't used to being told no; she denied him and kept it moving. True story. There was no talk of frequency.
Actually Dans vibration was 528!

One very small small nitpicky thing: Like A Velvet Glove was actually released as a serialized story in Dan Clowes's Eightball between 1989 and early 1993. It was later released in graphic novel form in 1993.

The only thing missing is the attacker's history or medical background ?
The other interesting thing is, upon release from prison, he had a lot of restrictions. However, his restrictions did not address fire arms. If he is allowed to own a fire arm of any kind, we could have a big problem.
Felons can’t own firearms I believe. It doesn’t have to be addressed because they don’t pass the background check.

So interesting that there were others imitating this, thank you for the insight!
@@Spektator Yes we even said it to each other kidding around. It was a very well known news story and Dan Rather was well liked by most people. The fact that it happened as Dan Rather was returning from a showcase of intercepted Soviet communications run by a guy named "Kenneth" is the part of this story I haven't heard before. I'm definitely no longer a believer in the "guy was just crazy" explanation.
Holy shit. I have a copy of "Like a Velvet Glove Cast in Iron." I bought it on a whim from a department store's book section because it looked so strange. I never did give it more than a quick flip-through before it ended up forgotten on my bookshelf.

Almost sounds like a phrase used to wake a sleeper cell 🤔 like in family guy “gosh that Italian family at the other table sure is quiet” 😂 maybe Rather is a kgb sleeper 🤷♂️
For people curious about why Soviet TV broadcasts were difficult to receive, here's a snippet from a news article:
"A major obstacle was tracking the signals from the Soviet satellites.
