After riding it I found out the previous owner installed the power valve upside down which means it would cut out before hitting the power band. It has been fixed and should run way better in the upper rpms now!
I don't know anything about power valves, but my kx250 seems to have the same problem, it pulls nice at mid range, however in higher rpm's it seems to fall out from the power.
Thebest Ofmx yeah dude same thing happened to me. I rode my dads rm250 last year after being on 4 strokes since I was 7. Honestly best thing I’ve ever done was switch to a 2 stroke
I had a 89 cr 250 replica dez moinz and a 89 yz 125 i am disabled and unable to ride these videos remind me of my days gone by. Thank you from the bottom of my heart! I wish I still had them keep up the "work "
Definitely an exhaust system for sure, you already put new reeds in it so those will be good for a while, a flat top piston will for sure help the power, you can always port and polish the jug, and a hot rod crank if you wanna go that far in it
Dude keep this bike for ever. Its so rare and awesome i have a cr125 and a cr250 is my dream bike keep up the 2 stroke videos and make a cr250 build series
Throw v force reeds in them. A pro circuit platinum pipe, I have that on my 02 and it screams. 13-49 gearing. The stock carb is fine don't give in to the mikuni haters. If you're feeling ambitious I highly recommend a 10oz flywheel weight, it smooths out power and it will still pull hard. Also a mild port job would help as well. But from what I hear on the video it sounds slightly weak, it's close though. I think reeds and a pipe is most important though. Good luck these are fun bikes!
I really don't know much of the 02+ Cr250r engines other than they have a softer powerband with less hit. I spent a lot of time on a 2001, and that was the hardest hitting strongest engine I ever road. I would check to make sure the power valve is adjusted properly, check the jetting, do a compression test. From there you can do performance mods. First I would get a new pipe. Then cylinder and head work.
I'd send your cylinder and head off to Terry Varner, do a simple clean up on both so you can still run pump gas, and a full Fmf exhaust, and I believe Tusk makes a little plate that your reeds would bolt on to so the air to fuel ratio can mix better, and a programmable G.E.T ignition box to slightly advance the ignition timing for more power. And polisport makes a restyle kit for the Cr 125 and the Cr 250 to make it look like the new 4 strokes
Get a TwinAir power flow kit with the aluminum filter support cage. Also have a good look at the carb boot to airbox junction. The seal there between the two can sometimes degrade or not be fully sealed and dirt can get behind the airbox/filter seal. When you remove filter if you look down and see dirt on the inside of the boot leading to carb, you’ve got a leak.
New oem sized piston. Get carb rejetted. Get your cylinder ported. Repack exhaust. Run higher octane and edvance ignition timing. All about 450 bucks. If you want to spend money get aexpansion chamber to
Must agree I'm not hearing that power band. Check your power valve or your in one gear to high. She's suppose to scream and keep her in higher rpm for that constant band.
Aphotic Ontario dude if he kept that 250 in the top pwr band all the time he'd overjump everything and die. It's not a 125 cc screamer. It was built for torque and to stay in low/mid range more like a 4 stroke. You've obviously never ridden a cr250!
You need a reality check motocross.transworld.net/features/unleashed-fury-realizing-the-2004-honda-cr250rs-true-potential/ When we first threw a leg over our 2004 Honda CR250R test bike, we must admit that we were slightly disappointed. Ever since Honda switched to the electronic power valve and case-reed induction systems on the CR250R, the bike has lacked low-end torque and roll-on throttle response. With a wide-open rider like Ricky Carmichael at the controls bottom-end power might not be that important, but for the rest of us, having to struggle with the bike's lackluster low-end leaves much to be desired.
I just finished rebuilding the 02 you see in my pic. Check rc valve cables after every other ride. #1 cause of power loss or not peak power. When you do your next top end remove the 2 power valves and clean them before you put it back together. Bike loves 40:1 mix with Klotz. Oh and buy a headpipe.
Nice bike I had a crf250x 4 stroke and a cr250r I decided to sell the 4 and keep the 2. I enjoy the 2 stroke power band something I am use to growing up as a kid. Thanks for sharing.
I have a 2001 CR250 with a lectron carb, fmf gnarly and shorty silencer. The bike absolutely rips. The lectron was the best investment since I would spend more time worrying about and adjusting jets for performance based on weather, etc and I am so happy I did. I keep it looking stock aside from the pipe and get compliments and buy offers every time I go to the track. I will NEVER sell it.
I just bought a 2005 cr250 and used to race them for decades and bought a new 1998cr250 while racing the expert class in the Uk ( few years ago now 😃) what an engine, jet it correctly, run 40/1 fuel and you won’t need anymore power, perfect engines and fun to ride, good vid 😎👍
Gazza ,.. I ran Belray oil 50/1 in my 02 CR250 & it run a lil lean at times, but still set the ground on 🔥... Careful not cook your piston, rings.. two strokes are a blast aren't they??
Smart choice! Also super cheap to maintain and rebuild if need be. I ride a 2010 yz250 2Stroke set up for the woods. All the bike I need for the woods. But if you can have the head ported and polished and for a faster power band hit out of the berms you could run a weighted flywheel. I have a 13oz stealy on my bike.
if it isn’t running good the. first thing i need to check is the spark plug. when u take it out. rub sandpaper between the gap and take a rag to get the oil off of it. then check the air breather and clean and reoil it
Lectron carb and slam them fucki turns hard. Low side in a turn is nothing. Rewind and dial back a touch. Cant scrub here but I'll eat some turns, whoops and straights. Love the voice while riding. Thank you for putting the video up! Safe riding!!
It sounds good man, but it doesn’t sound as snappy as it should be, not hating just giving advice.. i bought an 03 cr250r and it ran horrible with the mikuni tmx carb, i went with a keihin pwk as38 and its a night and day difference, nice bike man all she needs is some graphics!
Everyone always says the Mikuni is crap and switch to a Keihin. I've been riding my 01' CR250 for years on the stock Mikuni and it is perfectly fine. My dad's friend has an 02' with a Keihin and it doesnt run any better or worse. Ive done some minor jet work, just like all dirt bikes need, and she runs crisp and clean with the Mikuni. So for what it's worth, stick with the Mikuni and get other modifications done first and jet the carb properly. My guess, you won't need or even consider a new carb.
Gary Leach everyone I've know has had problems with the mikuni, always had to mess with the carb, once the switched instantly better, another buddy did all sorts of things to his could never get it to clear out always fouled plugs as did i, so I wouldn't stick with the stock
I got that TMX carb figured out. You change the dump tube from a number the number 9 to a number 7 and change the needle From the newer style Mikuni 2004 to 2007 this is a tapered needle I have the clip on the very top right very top and it snappy an he'll. No a 2001 cr250.
That jerky lugging sound at the low to low mid isn’t the normal lugging. Power valve is probably dirty or not at 100%. It cleans up towards the top so it’s prob not in the exhaust!!!
Man....your right handlebar past that tree on that shallow turn after the long fast straight....that tree should go. Good job on the 250 dude. Nice ass bike.
I have a 2006 cr250 that i had it ported and bigbore by tom morgan love the power, Make sure the power valve cables are adjust right, switch carb to 38mm airstriker, I have a 39mm keighn which works really well and I went with procircuit pipe but would like to try a fatty
Hahaha I love it. Kid tried to keep up with you and then just BRAAAAPPPP! Love my Honda 250 2 stroke. It's an 01. I do the same thing to people on the track. Can't catch em.
I would rebuild the top end and check the bottom end while your at it. You just push the push rod up down side to side if there is any play in it it needs a bottom end rebuild
Hey man it sounds like your power valve isn't opening or its jetted really rich on the main jet. Check the RC valve operation and adjust the cables according to the manual.
the bike he overtook was a 4f not sure the confusion and i am on a 2000 rm250 with a Rekluse Auto Clutch love her!! sold a 2007 yz450f for her and to cover suspension fine tuning i have an xr650l or xt250 to ride on road and even off no Comparison in fun simply cant compare
Have owned 2 of these, my advice is dont mess with the gearing, i was told to go up 1 tooth on the front sprocket and it killed it..... also take off the original carb and replace with a Keihin 38mm screw top (throttle slide) and it will transform the bike, seriously better power delivery at low to mid. Enjoy !!
I've heard one of the best upgrades you can do to a CR250 is get rid of the carburetor that's on it and replace it with a keihin carburetor or a lectron carburetor I'm looking into buying a CR250 this weekend and thats one thing i have learned in my research
I would just put a FMF fatty and shorty on there, and some other little stuff to make it look better like graphics drilled washers or something. I would clean the motor and stuff up some and I would call it good. Oh and I would take the kickstand off. And is it just me or does this bike sound like it’s struggling or it’s not really opening up. I know it’s a 250, but still it sounds different from all the other ones I’ve rode and heard...
looks like a great bike. I've been wanting to buy a cr250 for awhile. i have my crf450 but the 2 stroke scene is where its at. Id personally just update the suspension. put some newer forks and rear shock from a newer crf and have some even better suspension. depends on if you like the air forks. i know some people hate them. i like them. but you could put some 2017 forks or 2016 if you don't mind the air.
You have a tmx Mikuni carb? Change the dump tube from a number 9 to a number 7. And get the needle for the 2004 to 2007 Mikuni it's a tapered needle. This will make the bike so Snappy on bottom in all the way the top end in every gear. And replace your coil with a Crf 450 Meb or a 450 HP1 TRX 2002 to 2007
I was at the dealer to buy a kxf 450 and just looking around before buying and had a change of heart.. I instead nut the 2006 RM 250 Ricky Carmichael edition for 1200 blown ! All it needed was a cylinder replate and a piston ! In all the whole bike cost me 2500 ! the KXF was almost 8000 ! Best move I ever did and god was the 250 awesome ! Then regretted badly selling it to buy a washer and dryer :(
What track is this? Also try riding a gear lower, it sounds like the bike is running at too low of an RPM and isn't allowing the power valve to completely open
A pwk 38mm hands down will be your best ideal on that bike I had one on my 03 and currently have an 02 but nothing ever wrong with stock if it's getting her done
So i just got this bike last week, i got the dual sport one 250l. Where would you recommend I learn to ride at? A motocross track or an adventure trail or some parking lot/street?
motocross action has quite a few articles and videos on the 02-07 cr250 if your'e looking to make it run better. I guess those model years had bad low end power but i'm not sure if that is in general or from a pure racers standpoint
Stay at the higher end of the gear. Should be screaming. You'll know it when ya hear /feel it. As for power all you really need is good exhaust, sprocket , and get it ported and make sure its jetted properly. The port should depend on the type of riding you prefer to do most. For these types of tracks just a race style port would be fine.
Probably a combination of e valve, plug, carb, ect... Low hour bikes are gems in the hands of the appreciative. But along the way time wears parts too. Poor crank seal, oil soaked silencer packing, leaky head gasket ect... Truthfully I feel your really in the meat and potatoes part of this bikes power band. Once you clean every moving part and reassemble it with a new ring, then go stock with carb specs she should eat well then. I say go to a 48 or 49 rear sprocket. Don't change a thing with your suspension till she is crispy. You need full power to properly set-up and preload suspension on the track.
Sounds like it stutters a bit I would rebuild the carb with a complete stock rebuild kit ( jets, needle, air/idle screw with new springs) Clean the power valve for any gunk and clean it out. Fresh oiled air filter and a new plug. Then I would ride it and see how it runs then and go from there with further jetting, repack the silencer. After that make it as crispy as you want with performance parts, pipe, fresh top end etc. You would be surprised at what a carb rebuild kit will do ($25).. I've seen rounded off tips on mixture screws, wrong size jets installed. A stock carb kit guarantees you a stock starting point with fresh unmolested parts. Set the carb to owners manual stock settings for your elevation and climate temp and go from there. Who knows what previous owner(s) did.. if any trouble after that then look into jetting advice for your bike and area but not based off RUclips comment goons who's bike is not your bike and who don't live in your area. Nice bike👍
Someone told me that a two stroke will get you into trouble more. Will I be able to control a two stroke like I do my four stroke? Is a two stroke going to be less safe?
After riding it I found out the previous owner installed the power valve upside down which means it would cut out before hitting the power band. It has been fixed and should run way better in the upper rpms now!
What a goon!!
Thats some way to get more bottom end power lol
I don't know anything about power valves, but my kx250 seems to have the same problem, it pulls nice at mid range, however in higher rpm's it seems to fall out from the power.
I highly suggest lectron carb no jetting needed bikes never run better!
the lectron carbs are a must for any 2t they make you realise how shit at jetting we all are

A couple years ago I got a Honda CR250R (1990) for $300 and it runs great.
Damn what a deal
300 dollars and it runs?
sweet, i have a 03 cr 250 an im so glad people actually care about older honda 2 strokes. they are soo reliable as well. you will be surprised!
all older hondas are reliable idk so much about the 2018 because they are putting out so much hp
Hunter Ashley Rides my friends Honda 2018 250f forks blew after like 5 rides
Alex Carey the engines have to have a top end so much sooner because they are putting almost 10 more hp then older models
Old Honda 2t reliable...? Is this a joke lol it has to be a joke
I have a 1990 and I agree with you
Throw v force reeds in them. I really don't know much of the 02+ Cr250r engines other than they have a softer powerband with less hit. Johnathan Yinger and don’t use a a piston that’s not Honda brand bc the cr has a solid reputation of being reliable
Hunter Campbell He can use any piston he wants. Doesn't matter
haha 01
01 CR is the most sought after CR engine mainly b/c of the different pwr valve set up. A lot of 02/03 build ups use an 01 engine for that reason.
haha
I heard if you fill the tank with Pabst Blue Ribbon it'll run heaps better mate
Forie O'Hooligan did Ronnie mac tell you that? If so you have to mix it with tiger Semen too or isn't as good, you don't get the right octane levels
might as well piss in the gas tank, that beer is wack mate

:have you tried the jets or the carb or the spark plug:
Jetting is key for 2 strokes so if you have spot on jetting your bike will run great

looks like a great bike.
And replace your coil with a Crf 450 Meb or a 450 HP1
TRX 2002 to 2007
Great video man! Looks like that cr 250 is a blast!!
What is your handlebar? It looks almost straight. I like it.
Bike don’t sound good if i hear a two stroke i expect it to be screaming
Flyp The Candian 250 don’t scream as high as a 125 though, hard to bear that sound
Flyp The Candian old Honda 250s had more of a roar and less of a scream, especially since most of the power is in the bottom end
I have the same bike and have to agree it doesn’t sound right. Either you’re not in power band or or your power valve isn’t opening
Well i might now no because i have a 2007 cr250 and it rips
Ride with Zach That defo doesn't sound right, CR's make most of the power towards the top end, always have.
why did you replace your 4 stroke with a brappper??
Zach Davis what do you prefer a Yamaha yz250 2 stroke or a Honda cr250 2 stroke dunno which one i should buy
That's a choice and nicely made!! CR looks nice!
I'm with you on that. 4stroke was a expensive fase in my life.
What camera and camera helmet mount do u use? Awesome footage man
Who makes the kick stand for your bike?
motocross action has quite a few articles and videos on the 02-07 cr250 if your'e looking to make it run better.
That easel came together with the bike? where did you buy it? I have a cr250 but I can not find the platform with the support for the tripod
We’re did you get it I live In central NJ and I’m looking for a 1998 or a 2001 cr250 2 stroke under $3,000
The cr 250 is an engine that can't be snappy enough, what pipe is on it?
What carburetors on that bike the TMX Mikuni or does your Mikuni have three screws in your top?
how much did you pay for this bike? is it a good bike to learn on? I've only ridden manual 4 wheelers never a dirt bike
Dude your riding skills improved since a year ago...nice!
How many dirt bikes do you own?
JF_franoiko 3 but one is for sale and the other one is blown
2 stroke for the track, 4 stroke for the trails.
I have a 96 cr250 I bought brand new. Still on original piston rings. It's so nasty I always crash before I get any time in it lol.
That looked like a nice piece of ace sitting in your camping chair bud.
I got an 02 cr 250 and love it and if you put a pipe or reed that will give it some more power
I'm all for stock bikes but if you want to make it run better probably start with V Force 3 reeds and a FMF Gold Series pipe or pro circuit.
Nice bike👍
Liked. 2 strokes all the way
I’d start with a nice pipe setup. Lots of good ones out there.
Put a lectron carb on her and that will make her run nice and crisp. The stock carb sucks on these, first thing I changed on mine.
vhm head and a power pipe. pro circuit or fmf.
Someone told me that a two stroke will get you into trouble more. Will I be able to control a two stroke like I do my four stroke? Is a two stroke going to be less safe?
What you did at 6:43 is what I love to do. It's such a great feeling hitting that rev in the air. lol.
Took to it like a duck in water!! Nice ride bro!
Nice bike man I have a 02 and the power is unreal, the 450’s have nothing for me lol
