  • In this video I compare the different kinds of gouache that I've used so far. I did not try every brand out there and don't intend to buy more products but there are all of the ones I've tried so far. Personally I'd buy a beginners set of Winsor and Newton Designers Gouache and a set of Turner Acrylic gouache.

    I use Himi Gouache personally, and I really enjoy it as a casual artist!
    I agree about the smell! It does smell weird, but it's honestly not that huge of a deal to me, as once it's dried down and I close the palette it doesn't smell at all in my workplace.
    I really like its consistency because I'm used to using Acrylic paint, I like how I can control how much or little of the paint I have, and I'm learning better how not to use too much/how a little can go a long way when mixed to the right opacity.
    I think it's a great beginner gouache paint and its pretty accessible as someone in the US, although finding refills can be difficult and I'm debating what I'll do when I run out of certain colors. Time to get better at mixing? lololol!

      Also super cheap compared with to others! Tbh I think it’s better that it has a lot of a single colour instead of a bunch of colours because it teaches you how to mix colours better. Only thing is weird is that the colours always dry out because they’re not in tubes

      the HIMI has more binder than pigment. that's why they seem less opaque, and don't perform well for laying flat layers.

    My himi Gouache set smelled pretty strongly, too, but it fainted after they dried out a bit. The arteza set I have didn't smell at all. Personally I prefer the arteza Gouache over the himi, but I prefer the big containers of the himi Gouache. Arteza is perfect for beginners, but if you're serious about it, I would opt for better quality like Windsor and Newton or Schminke.

    I own both the Turner and the Acryla Gouache from Holbein. The Holbein ones are the best, more creamy, easier to spread. The Turner ones are way too thick (like true acrylics), making it difficult doing small details with them, and their metallic colors formula is defective: the tubes separated their binder after only 2 years, making them useless (I had bought the whole set, this was a problem with their metallics). Overall, Holbein has the best colors and consistency. And yes, they're much more expensive but you get what you pay for.

    • @VisualMind
      @VisualMind  3 года назад +2

      That's very interesting because I find that my Turner paints are thinner in consistency. So my experience is the other way around... I find Turner are easier to spread but Holbein are more opaque. At the end of the day I love both brands though. I've never tried the metallics but good to know! Thanks for sharing your experiences :)

      I just completed my first painting using my Holbein Designers Gouache. The Holbein gouache was a dream to work with. I had previously used Arteza gouache and Royal Talens Art Creation "gouache". I use all my gouache from a dried state. The Holbein reactivated easily, the coverage was great without streaks and it was very easy to blend colors on the page. Arteza gouache is decent to work with but I personally hate many of the colors. I bought the 60 color set so I wouldn't have to mix colors, but most of the colors are so garish that I end up having to mix just to tone them down. The more I use it, the more I like the Art Creation gouache. It's really runny out of the tube and usually takes more than one layer to attain opacity, but the color range in the set is really good, it's super cheap and it reactivates from a dry state easily. The colors in the Art Creation set are dull compared to Holbein, but I really like them for just messing around on something that isn't important.

    I like (even now) to just go to my nearest store and buy a tube I need and that I can buy the color I want not as a whole set.
    I looking into acrylic gouache, I now have bought liquitex acryl gouache. The smell is the reason why they are still unused :)
