- We recently started growing strawberries in our DIY indoor hydroponic system! We had a few challenges at first but the plants are producing a lot of berries for us now! In this video we go into detail on how we planted and grew the strawberries. When researching this ourselves it was hard to find much information on how to grow strawberries indoors. Hope you find it helpful!
Check out our website for more information on how to build and indoor hydroponic system just like ours!

Cool Thank You!
I dont understand why ppl thumb down on such a good detailed video and SIMPLE method that works super great! Keep doing this excellent job!
Browning of the tips of leaves can be an indicator for potassium deficiency. But since you are so high with your nutrient levels that is somewhat unlikely. Still, flowering and fruit bearing plants tend to require higher levels of potassium and phosphorous, so you could consider shifting the balance a slight bit into the fruity territory.
But be aware that while over fertilizing is not an issue with most of the nutrients, this is actually possible with too much phosphorous. Yield drops, with too much P.
1000 ppm is really quite high. Half of that or less should be sufficient.
My first attempt was started 2 days ago with strawberries over/in my goldfish aquarium. We'll see how it goes. Thanks for the video. Liked and subbed.
Update?
Thanks mate! Just got my system working, similar to yours, round pipes 4", just 2 x 2 meters now but will expand later on, thinking of 3" pipes then for strawberrys and maybe some herbs.. So much fun, got alot going on now, pak choi, alot of different sallats, strawberrys... Also started 2 kratkys.. Video will come when i got some more to show.. :D
Good video. And yes. I’m growing them for my daughter too
Malformed berries are the sign of incomplete pollination. Bring some bees there, or pollinate flowers with a soft brush.
Great tip! We started hand pollinating since making this video and I would agree that it works well.
Wow! Thanks. I want ed to try planting strawberries. Hehehe thanks for the tips.
I was wondering why some of my berries looked weird
@@user-gh8wt2zi2nit's because you touch yourself at night.
Another new subscriber, here...my name is Jeff... hopefully you are reachable with questions and the like..I'm moving and want to start hydroponics and such.. I'm in Pennsylvania... been a gardener for many years... time to try something different.. love this video, hence my subscribing, etc... thank you.
That's a lot of berries!
I just want to grow strawberries because i LOVE them, i eat them by the pound 😅
Brown tips is probably a pH imbalance! You can lock every nutrients that way. I always pH test after adding the nutrients to make sure it's in that perfect range. I have a hydroponic set up with everbearing and run into problems as soon as it gets over 650 ppm
thx for the info and experience sharing
Very informative video. But I am curious about one thing. When we plant the runners in soil, they make new shoots and gift you with more runners. Is this possible in hydroponic system? It will be very profitable to get new plants from the old ones. Any ideas appreciated 🙏🏻🙏🏻
Yes its possible and we did exactly that! However its a little more difficult than soil because you have to pin the runner inside a net cup to keep it moist as it develops roots.
@@SimpleGreensHydroponics I found in this system(built using your course thanks!) But I use the rapid rooter seed pods to plant the runners. I'll put one in a net cup, then use jute cord or something like that to tie the runner down to the cup, and touching the rapid rooter pod, works quite well!
@@SimpleGreensHydroponics What’s s runner ? And what nutrients do you use ?? I have masterblend with nitrate, and Epsom salt. Will this work, or what should I use to get the correct amounts of nutrients of phosphorus, nitrogen….etc., do you have a video on nutrients and when and how much to apply ?? Thanks !! ; )
Wow, you don't need to hand-pollinate them? I've seen other YT showing hand pollination for each strawberry. They said that strawberries won't grow if not pollinated, but yours looks good.
Hand pollination does help improve the berry size and shape
Very interesting video. Do you need to hand pollinate the flowers to get strawberries?
It's not necessary, but it does improve the size and shape of the berries.
Great video. Do you get the cobb webs on the leaves? I get lots. Still no fruit. I'm pretty sure my water level dropped and the plants started getting brittle. Added water, hope to save them.
Trying to find out the exact details what you have shown. I really relate it to my queries. No doubt I subscribed looking for more details and how to go further. Lots of thanks from India. I have one query though, does it require to maintain any certain temperature?
I have the system in my home so it stays 65-75 degrees F and the strawberries do well.
@@SimpleGreensHydroponics thanks a lot. A lot to learn from you
How do you measure to know how much solution to use for strawberries ?
the reason your berries are weird shaped is that they are not pointed. you need to introduce pollinators to them. like bees. but it's a difficult task. or pollinate them yous self with a q tip.
I was just wondering if you have them in perfect conditions and you supply them with light nutrients and water how long do they live?
Will they supply you with berries for as long as you supply them with these 3 things?
So far the limiting factor I've found is the plant roots growing too large, but I'm still doing real-world research.
do indoor strawberry plants every need a "break" to rest or will these keep producing forever as long as you give it lights and nutrients? If they do need a break, what do you do with them and for how long until you can put them back into the hydroponic solution
I've had them 6 months and they are still producing but from what I've read they will need a break at some point. I'm working on starting new plants from runners to be ready to go once these plants are done but I'm not sure yet what I'll do with the old plants.
@@SimpleGreensHydroponics Are they still going now?
@@SimpleGreensHydroponics why not sell them to the farm you have bought?
How many kgs of strawberries would you say you got per plant per year?
What nutrient do you use? Please make a video on preparing nutrient.
Is it possible to grow using normal fertilizer, plz inform me,
should you give them different strength of nutrient solution when they start to flower? they will be needing diff amount of NPK as compared to lettuce..TIA
May I ask what you use to measure nutrition in the water? Thank you
Thanks for this video. I was wondering, how long will a plant continue to produce fruits before you have to start a new one?
Several months at least
How do you pollinate them if they are indoors?
Thank you so much for sharing your updates and tips & tricks! Going through your Udemy course now
1) Do you think there would be any benefit to using 5 x 5 fence posts to allow more room for the roots of strawberries or tomatoes?
2) I might have missed it (or hasn't been made yet), were you able to make the video showing your cost breakdown?
Yes to the 5 inch rails, I'm trying that right now and it's working well so far.
I have not finished the cost video as quick as I hoped, though I'm recording and editing it now so be on the lookout for it soon.
Did you need to polinate them or do they take care of themselves?
Hi curious to find out what is the temperature of your indoor set up and do you control ph and other factors other than nutrient levels?
The indoor air temp is around 75 F in the summer and closer to 65 F in the winter. We do a keep an eye on pH but regular nutrient changes generally keeps it between 6.0 and 6.5.
@@SimpleGreensHydroponics Would Stawberries grow well in temperature between 77 and 84F?
About how long was the harvest time before seeing fruit? 70+ days?
The first berries start around 60 days, but most will come after 70+ days.
How long did these bear before you had to replace them?
Hello, how high are the lights from the plant?
how many pounds of strawberries each plant produces per month???
We didn't keep track of the weight of our yield this time, sorry.
@@SimpleGreensHydroponics or how many strawberries???
@@MultiChitoman Our best plant had 15-25 berries per week usually.
@@SimpleGreensHydroponics every months???
How are you pollination the berries?
This is just my opinion, but I think Masterblend is overkill for strawberries. I use General Hydroponics MaxiGro Plant Food for my indoor strawberries and also my diva cucumbers.
That might be. We are growing lettuce in the same system and Masterblend has worked well for lettuce so we didn't want to change it up right away. We're hoping to experiment with other nutrients in the near future and MaxiGro is one we want to try!
How do you deal with pollination? Is the fan doing the trick? Or do you spend some time doing it by hand?
The fan does a decent job of pollination, but otherwise dabbing the flowers with a pipe cleaner has worked well.
Is it worth the effort to move the leafs around to get more sun to the weaker areas?
I don't think so, it's hard to move them once they get large roots.
what should be the PH level?
Do you pollinate the strawberry flowers by hand?
Air movement alone does decent pollination, but hand pollination results in nicer berries
@@SimpleGreensHydroponics ok, thanks.
Nice. Does these plants produce berries throughout the year or for a particular period (2-3 months/year) ?
In my experience they produce berries for several months and then slow down, though the roots were too large for my system at that point so that was a contributor. Still testing though 🙂
@@SimpleGreensHydroponics : Thanks for responding :)
wait do the strawberries need to get pollinated to grow fruits?
Yes, though some pollination occurs on its own from the fan. Using a small brush improves pollination.
Do you need to pollinate the flowers, or it will just produce fruits on its own?
Good question! These plants are self-pollinating so it happens on its own.
@@SimpleGreensHydroponics Thanks!
Good video......Have you tried any other Berries besides those....?....Selah
Thanks! Only strawberries so far.
No pollinators?
The fan pollinates decently well, otherwise a pipe cleaner or paintbrush works.
@@SimpleGreensHydroponics I'm trying to implent stingless bees into my indoor strawberries but I haven't found resources on it
I think you have excess of nitrate and deficiency of potassium. Solutions for fruits and leffy greens must be different.
Unsesonly strawberry fruits cultivation possible entairy years
Can you kindly tell me how much do hydroponic berries cost?
Strawberries
Blueberries
Blackberries
I need the info for a project
I love how far you've come with the Strawberries hydroponically!
I was planning to plant strawberries using bato bucket system, but now I've decided to use my hydroponic system for that. Thanks for the tips :)
Thank you for posting. I started growing strawberries this year outside and it was my first time ever getting an lots of strawberries. I think I found the perfect place for them to grow. I want to start growing strawberries indoors or when it’s winter. I was also inspired to try growing indoors because we had so many rain this past month a lot of my strawberry plants got sick. I’m excited to start growing strawberries inside
My pepper plant looks like your strawberries. Curled tight leaves. They wonder why?
I’m definitely going to grow strawberries in my garden room this winter 👍
Are you running super high newts like he is
Great success with the strawberries! I'm just getting my hydroponics going indoors for the winter and never thought about trying strawberries. Might have to add to my list! Subscribed!
The weird shape is from improper pollination. You gotta shake those flowers a bit or use a qtip. I know they are "Self pollinating" But thats gotta be done when doing them indoors. Not from flower to flower but just each one on its own. Gotta spread that love. Great video
i would do the hard method because i like hard
Thank you so much for your help. I'm planning to grow strawberries hydroponically.
Thanks!! I was looking around and some scientific papers studied EC levels at 1.5 as being optimum, while you said you're using 0.8.
I ended up trying 1.5 EC by adding table salt...like they suggested in the paper. And it nearly killed all 30 strawberry plants, leaving only the crown barely alive with all the leaves dead. Had to flush the system start again with just the surviving crown :( 600-800ppm seems to be the correct range.
You can use specialized coco substrate grow bags for strawberries where are you from?
It would be nice if you could show us how to prepare the strawberry seedlings for hydrophonics, seedlings in a pot and then transfer or? Kind of confused, please advice
He didn't use seedlings, I believe he bought a root stock
Nice. I have a bunch of really small flowers (like hundreds) on one plant waiting to see if they’ll grow properly. The other plant I have is similar to yours.
Cool! Hopefully the flowers turn into nice berries for you. I'm impressed with how many berries these strawberry plants can kick out.
I saw an article on the NC State website that explained strawberry flowers may need a little help self pollinating in order to avoid small or malformed fruit. I figured I'd pass on the tip since you've shared so many with all of us.
Great tip. I started pollinating with a paint brush after making this video and I would agree it really helps.
u can also use artificial air which more easier and more efficient such as a blower or fan.
Thanks for posting. I have a hydroponic system and wanted to try strawberries. You have given me hope that I can do this too!
I hate the "there's too many people on the planet" and "theres not enough resources" yeah BS. Calories per person farmed is increasing year to year despite population increase. Brothers a geologist and said if earth was an apple we haven't been deeper than less than the apple skin thickness. Basic economics, as prices increase, its viable to develop new technologies to find new resources or make better use of whats available. I watched ur video because bidens America food prices going up and availability down so I bet hydro kits will get more and more popular. Do u sell kits? Now the time to start. Even expensive kits people would buy just for peice of mind, not having to rely on expensive supply and some loonie puts needles in the punetts. Again gov driving up mental illness, look at demo crat city's,more they "help" worse everything gets. Good job with ur set up and u have fans so potential customers
You are correct.
Also: I wish these kits were forsale. I'd like to grow all my veggies indoor hydro in some 4x8 tents.
Since you are an engineer; I offer you a challenge. Find a way to grow root vegetables in a home system. Currently, the only systems I have seen are huge and challenging.
That would be a challenge! I may give it a try someday soon.
Super helpful video. Thank you. I've been rooting plants in my aquarium for years. Monstera and pathos. I've always wanted to bear fruit though.
I'm having a trouble with my strawberry..all the flower bud will get burnt before it can turn into a proper strawberry..help me please
One thing you can try is hand pollination - use a soft paintbrush to gently pollinate each flower.
@@SimpleGreensHydroponics never thought of that.. definitely gonna try soon.. thank you for the suggestion
Wow, this video making me buy a rooted strawberry that having a start from seeds, I did have seeds to germinate but waited for nothing. So I guess i just buy one that is live plants instead. Thank you and God bless
did u freeze them 2 to 4 weeks ?
I am new to hydroponics, so I wonder if the plants need a cold phase, since they bloom when temperature is rising.
Definitely trying this principle in combination with a glasshouse.
They seem to bloom without any special temperature changes, but these are also ever bearing plants.
@@SimpleGreensHydroponics ok, thanks for answer
What is your spacing between the strawberries?
Thank you so much for the nutrient value recommendation. Saved me another search =)
For your strawberries, do they need to be pollinated?
When you say 800-900 PPM does that account for the PPM in the original water or is that cumulative? Ie….I have 400 PPM in raw water, Would you use a PPM reading of 400 + 800=1,200 or would you just use a simple 800 PPM target?
What system are you using?
What kind of solution are you using , I'm a newbie.
I want to start an indoors aquaponic system for vegetables...
Do you rotate your plants because I am growing mine in a pot with soil inside and I hear it is supposed to be good for the plant even though I am really new to growing strawberries
Great channel. I hope you keep uploading hydroponic/growing related videos because they are very informative. I just have one question, though. Which variety of strawberries are those ? I'm trying to find a good variety to grow indoor hydroponically between day-neutral & everbearing ones.
Good question, these are Monterey Strawberries and they are everbearing. I bought them from our local greenhouse this spring.
Are you still growing Strawberries? I bought a bunch last year and they did ok at first but all died but I always kept my ppm between 1200-1300 or 2.1-2.2ecm. I guess that is the reason why so I'll try again. I have some June Berries so I'm curious to see if I can get them to produce all year by adjusting the light and timer. I researched that June Berries stop producing when the days get longer so if I keep the grow lights no more than 6-8 hours/day. I hear it might work. Let me know if you have learned anything new since this video. Thanks a lot!
Yes, I have learned quite a bit about strawberries since making this video. My latest video (link below) shows my current strawberry system. I am working on some more videos related to strawberries as well.

Thanks for the video, what are the growlights you are using?
Hey there. How have your strawberries been holding up? I'm doing a hydroponic indoor system as well, but mine is vertical. Loved the video!
Is it inside a grow tent? Do you shake the plants to pollinate the flowers?
Looks great gonna set something up myself thank you
What's your light schedule and the ppfd please sir..
What is your lighting and what distance from plants?
How long does it take to get strawberries from starting with root stock?
Which variant is that? Also are everbearing ones better than the day-neutral ones?
just found your channel! Definitely trying to grow some strawberries
Nicely done. What instrument did you use to test PPM?
Hello, I bought your course but you didn't teach how to measure ppm (nutrients). and taking the opportunity, I would like to ask how to pollinate strawberries.
Thank you.
To measure ppm I use a little TDS meter and dip the probe into the nutrient solution until it gives a reading. To pollinate strawberries, a small paintbrush works well.
Thank you for sharing! There's a lot of foliage and fruits. How can you measure the ppm?
We use a cheap digital meter to measure TDS. I also have one hooked up to a Raspberry Pi doing constant monitoring, though not necessary.
Is it an organic way to do this?
Yes there are nutrients you can buy that are considered organic, though we use non-organic nutrients. However, even with non-organic nutrients we do not need any pesticides or sprays, which for us achieves the same benefits as organic as far as clean produce.
Really enjoyed your video, just subscribed to your channel.
I am new to hydroponics and the reason i got into it is because of the climate where i am currently living. Dubai UAE is a very hot and humid country most of the year practically from May to November, the sun seems extremely harsh as well with temperatures averaging 45+ degrees Celsius from 10:00am to 20:00pm.
Coming from South Africa, i am use to being able to go to a grocery store a pick up 500g of strawberries for about US$3 and they taste amazing, in the UAE its all imported with prices around US$8 upwards. Tried to grow a few items in my 20m2 garden but only have 5 good months to so, now am into hydroponics and hoping to grow my own.
Any advise on the tool/equipment which you use to measure the PPM and Acidity Level as well as the best type of nutrients, i have a Growing Light but not sure if it will aid in the growing of my strawberries.
Cool! We have quite a bit of info on our website including a page about nutrients. Feel free to contact us through our site if you have more questions:

I love your video thank you! I just wanted to ask how many hours of light do you give your strawberry plants?
Right now our lights run 14 hours per day.
@@SimpleGreensHydroponics Thank you for your reply!
Hi, Thanks for the video! I have planted 81 strawberry plants. Please guide me
1. What colour light are you using for strawberry?
2. Is it necessary to cut the base of the cups ?
3. Do the flowers self pollinate? I have been told that my plants are self pollinating, but I am not sure.
Thank you and I look forward for your reply.
1. A full spectrum grow light, this particular one is from Active Grow.
2. The root stock I've gotten always has large roots already so I've found it necessary.
3. They will self-pollinate somewhat, but hand pollination helps the berries to grow larger and have a nice shape.
That is awesome. Congrats! You have inspired me to try this. I just bought an aero garden.
Thanks for sharing your experience. Are you using the Kratky method? Do you use aeroponics? What's your lamp and DLI for strawberry growth? Congrats for achieving some beautiful berrys.
Thank you! Our system is a hybrid between NFT and DWC since there's always water flowing through it but it's deeper than a nutrient film. We do not use aeroponics at this time. We use Active Grow T5 LED lights and the DLI is somewhere around 15 just based on our lighting specs. Check out our website for more details!
1000 ppm of which nutrient?
How high u keep the ph on ur strawberrys
Thank you for showing from start to harvest.
How long would you suggest trimming flower buds and runners while the starters grow?
Have you thought of any good methods for allowing runners to root in order to create new plants?
I trim runners the whole time unless I'm trying to start new plants. I've gotten new plants to start by keeping the base of the runner in water.
At this point I don't trim the flowers anymore as I haven't found it necessary.
What variety of strawberry
hey, can you help me with chart for General Hydroponics flora trio ?
Hi, if you send us an email (check the "Contact Us" section of our website) with your question we can try and help!
Do you measure your source water tds and ph before adding nutrients?
Yes, though not every time since we know the normal pH and TDS of our tap water. Our rainwater is neutral.
