    Linda Hamilton is awesome in this. She gets a lot of credit for the physical changes she made, but the best part of her appearance here for me is when she was about to kill Dyson and broke down. In that moment she realizes she became what she feared the most. She became a terminator, somone willing to kill to change the future.

      It's also her sister in the scene where they take the chip out of the T800 (Arnold's) head to flip the switch.
      There is no mirror, Linda's twin sister Leslie plays her reflection and copies her movements, a clever way to avoid having to hide cameras etc in the edit.
      Leslie is seen again as the T1000 version of Sarah Connor in the steelworks at the end.

    The thing about the first film is that you need to see how Sara Conner is at first an innocent young woman not knowing anything outside of her normal life with her roommate, not believing this at first, having to be convinced it is really happening and coming to the realization that she had to go and learn about what she needs to do to become the woman who raises John Conner to be this great leader. Without the back story you would never understand where she came from and what it took to get her prepared to come up against this

    • @blytheguy7510
      @blytheguy7510 Год назад +5

      I think the main reason he didn't kill anyone in the bar is because there was too many people there. Even a Terminator knows that would bring too much attention to him. In the first movie he walked up on 3 punks alone so there was no issue of killing them.

    • @brei2670
      @brei2670 Год назад +9

      Yeah, I think they actually messed that part up. While I understand that the goal was to make the character a good guy (and he didn't kill anyone throughout the movie), it kinda ruined the reveal in that corridor. They even gave him a cool soundtrack for the bar scene... I wouldn't have minded if he killed someone early on, especially some bad guys who attacked him. Would have had me guessing longer.

    "Hasta la vista, baby."
    Fun Fact: Linda Hamilton's twin sister, Leslie Hamilton Gearren, was used as a double in scenes involving two "Sarah Connors" (for example, when the T-1000 was imitating her). Identical twins Don Stanton and Dan Stanton played the hospital security guard and the T-1000.
    No Camera Tricks Fact: Robert Patrick undertook a rigorous running regime and practiced breathing only through his nose, in order to appear to be a cyborg that could run at high speeds without showing fatigue. He had trained so hard that he was able to catch up to Edward Furlong on his dirt bike with ease.
    Stripper Night Fact: A female passer-by wandered onto the biker bar set thinking it was real, despite walking past all the location trucks, cameras, and lights. Seeing Arnold Schwarzenegger standing in the bar dressed only in boxer shorts, she finally asked what was going on, only for Schwarzenegger to reply that it was male stripper night.
    Nuclear Nightmare Fact: Special effects guru Stan Winston and his crew studied hours of nuclear test footage in order to make Sarah Connor's "nuclear nightmare" scene look as realistic as possible. A miniature Los Angeles was made to simulate the scene. Some of the materials used in the miniature that mimicked all the destroyed masonry were Matzos crackers and Shredded Wheat. After each take, it would take on average two days to set the model up to shoot again. In late 1991, members of several US federal nuclear testing labs unofficially declared it "the most accurate depiction of a nuclear blast ever created" for a fictional movie. The special effects team members have stated several times that no scene they've worked on since has received an equivalent amount of praise or emotional feedback from viewers.

The first one went to 1984 to delete her and the other went to 1995 to delete her son. Both were sent at the same time. A lot of people, including me, misheard her and thought she say that Skynet sent two terminators back in time to delete John.

    I like that this film is very action heavy but also implements some deep science fiction questions throughout the film. You don't see a whole lot of action films dive deep into philosophical and hard science fiction ideas.

    This was great in the theater back when it came out. That level of CGI was still fairly new, and even the parts that were a not so great was better than most of what had come before. The T-1000 walking through the bars and that reversal near really got a reaction. It was also funny to think that that shrink would be checking in to the facility after having his mind blown like that.

      What's cool is all the practical effects done in the movie too. The T-1000 getting shot -practical. The healing was CGI. Motorcycle into canal - practical, truck into canal, practical, helicopter under the overpass, believe it or not, practical.

      @@SteelJM1 Right. They understood the limitations of CGI at the time, so they only used it for certain things. Even then you could tell where they cut corners a bit and put more effort into the bigger scenes. Practical effects were indeed used whenever possible.

    This movie preceded a major uptick in carjackings that may have been induced by this movie pointing out that people leave their keys in their cars, so people began to take their keys more seriously, so parked cars were harder to steal.
    This is also done four years later in *Independence Day* when Vivica A. Fox confiscated the big truck after the city was destroyed.
    I can't think of any movies that did it after that.

    And to think a movie about a robot sent back from the future to protect a kid (sent by the kid himself) from another robot sent to the past to kill said kid, gave me the feels big time. This was so well written and crafted. As said before in these comments, T2 is the GOAT and the gold standard for sci-fi movies.

    I first saw this back when it came out on rental here in Norway. I was 10 years old at the time and it was the scariest movie I had ever seen. My uncle who saw it in the cinema couldn't stop talking about the special effects, and I think it can't be overstated how incredible they were at the time - I don't think they were matched until Jurassic Park came out. Today I feel we are very jaded when it comes to special effects.
    I don't think you mentioned it, but you might have recognized John Connor/Edward Furlong from American History X. He looks different with hair but his face is quite characteristic.
    You're completely right about how it was unnecessary to make any more movies after this, but no way a movie as successful as this one wouldn't have sequels. Unfortunately none of the subsequent movies are anywhere close to T2 in quality and of course you will compare them to T2, so it's a setup for disappointment. T3 is basically "what if there was a sexy female terminator" and it's as dumb as it sounds.

    Arnold's "spin-cock" move with the lever-action shotgun came from the likes of John Wayne (in some of his movies) and Chuck Connors (no relation with Sarah and John) as Lucas McCain in _The Rifleman_ . These are all westerns, which is natural because the Old West was when lever-action firearms were at their most popular. To enable spin-cocking, the lever loop has to be made a lot larger and rounder than it normally is from the factory. The very same lever-action Winchester shotgun used in this movie was also used in _The Mummy Returns_ by Brendan Fraser, although he doesn't spin-cock it (that I recall 🤔).

    Linda Hamilton got so jacked for this film that she could actually rack that shotgun with one hand like that. Arnie’s shotgun had to be customised so he could flip it round his hand, the under lever had to be made bigger. The first time he tried it he nearly broke his wrist because his hands are so big that it didn’t rotate properly and the combination of momentum and weight of the gun nearly injured him.
    In my opinion, not only is T2 the best movie sequel ever made, but I’d go as far as to say it’s better than the first one. I believe it to be James Cameron’s finest work.
