Classical - Richard Wagner - Ride of the Valkyries

- Опубликовано: 13 сен 2024
- The Ride of the Valkyries (German: Walkürenritt or Ritt der Walküren) is the popular term for the beginning of Act III of Die Walküre, the second of the four operas by Richard Wagner that comprise Der Ring des Nibelungen. The main theme of the ride, the leitmotif labelled Walkürenritt was first written down by the composer on 23 July 1851. The preliminary draft for the Ride was composed in 1854 as part of the composition of the entire opera which was fully orchestrated by the end of the first quarter of 1856. Together with the Bridal Chorus from Lohengrin, the Ride of the Valkyries is one of Wagner's best-known pieces.
In the opera-house, the Ride, which takes around eight minutes, begins in the prelude to the Act, building up successive layers of accompaniment until the curtain rises to reveal a mountain peak where four of the eight Valkyrie sisters of Brünnhilde have gathered in preparation for the transportation of fallen heroes to Valhalla. As they are joined by the other four, the familiar tune is carried by the orchestra, while, above it, the Valkyries greet each other and sing their battle-cry. Apart from the song of the Rhinemaidens in Das Rheingold, it is the only ensemble piece in the first three operas of Wagner's Ring cycle. Outside the opera-house, it is usually heard in a purely instrumental version, which may be as short as three minutes.

John WIlliams is definitely inspired by Wagner. Legend inspiring legend!
John Williams is an epigone, not a legend...Wagner IS a legend and a genius.
John Williams was inspired also by Gustav Holst and other classical composers.
@@rwboa22 Yes but Holst was heavily inspired by Wagner. Wagner was revolutionary in ways not every great composer was, even Bach (he mastered the techniques of his day and did them better than anyone else, but he was no great innovator) Wagner changed music theory itself with “Tristan und Isolde”. Wagner is easily the most influential composer of all time, because his influence went far beyond music and into pretty much every branch of the arts, sciences and philosophies (Nietzsche most famously)
Wagner was a genius and is the true father of contemporary dramatic music imo. He thought of "cinema" before it even exists. Don't ask me how, lol. It's incredibly ahead of his time and until today inspires people of the caliber of John Williams and others. I love to hear artists influencing artists. And yes, John Williams is a musical legend of the 20th century with his works for the cinema, which I think Wagner would love btw.

A lot of the time great classical music can say more without using any words than uninspired music today can say with hundreds of words. was just talking to my dad about this a few minutes earlier and then I read your comment.. funny how the italian composers hated the german ones and vice versa but understandable... their music is worlds apart... to be honest, I enjoy Liszt, Wagner or Schubert more than Rossini or Verdi. And then second half. Valkyries had choosen best and bravest warriors and took them to Valhalla. I can see them entering from beautiful garden, through giant gates to the great hall. There are long tables with various food and endless mead is flowing between already fallen comrades, who are enjoying time and laughing... And then comes Odin (Wotan) to the hall, where they are, sitting down on the throne and welcoming new fallen souls... They are taking seats between others behind the table and live with them in eternity...
