When I played a soloist in 84 it was by far the best playing finest built instrument I had ever seen. To this day those first Jackson guitars from that era are right up with the best. As a 30 years experience repair tech I've played and seen pretty much everything.

When youtube first came out, I had no interest. Who would want to watch other people's videos? I'm realizing YT's promise is now coming to fruition (for me anyway). I don't watch movies or netflix lately, I'm watching Tone Talk and other good content on RUclips (needles in haystacks, but great when you find them). Seeing those guitars hanging in the shops during that era is still etched into my brain till this day, they are such fond memories! Thank you guys for sharing this with us all! Thank you Dave for your BE100. I have searched for my tone since the 80's. I got a BE100 a few years ago, threw a few basic pedals in the effects loop, and now I have killer classic tones, and even modern distortion tones. The clean tones are awesome too!! Every time I turn it on, I am just amazed.
I was fortunate enough to be gifted an 80s custom shop San Dimas super strat. It's the finest guitar I've ever played. Funny thing is, i only met the guy one time he was a friend of my sister's. Wish I could tell him how much I've enjoyed owning the guitar for the last 22 years!

I lived in the Covina area,and I remember Charvels shop.Azusa was the next city over,And I remember a lot of jamming in that shop ,me included.Right next door to a Strip Bar.Hahaha👍🎸😎✌
I can't speak for Jackson guitars since I never owned one, but Fender made Charvels are great, both the Mexican and the USA made ones. I recently got a USA Select DK24, and it's awesome.
The Mexican Charvels have been hit or miss for me. Both my DK24’s came with incorrect pickup wiring; one had the bridge in the neck pos, the other had the bridge pickup split. One had a the neck was seated poorly / slanted. The 1 that didn’t though is one of my best.
This is an awesome show guys. Regardless if you're a veteran "gear-head/tone-nerd" or just starting out. Honestly, it's a really great format for some interesting discussion and banter from people we all respect, and I'm sure we can all learn from it. It was such an insight to hear Grover tell those stories... I learned a lot from the man in such a short time. Subscribed straight away! :) Looking forward to more episodes now, Cheers!

i bought a pre owned Jackson Dinky JS32 a few weeks back. Best guitar i've ever played, the neck is amazing, my playing has really stepped up a level since i got it. Amazing guitars

I'm from Columbus, Ohio. My buddies and I used to frequent the Alrosa Villa back in the 80's. One of my best friends was a bass player in a Metal band, and I used to roadie for them when they did the Battle of the Bands at the Alrosa. When I found out that Dime was killed at the bar I used to hang at, and in my hometown, I was crushed. Still am. RIP Dime.

If you bought a Jackson Randy Rhoads Student or Custom when they first were available, a portion of the money went to the Musonia School of Music. I don't know how long this lasted though.
Universal did a fantastic box set of their classic monster movies...all re-mastered and look and sound amazing given their age (1930's etc.). If you like the classics like Dracula, The Wolfman, The Mummy, etc...I highly recommend these. Lots of bonus stuff on the discs too!
Wish I could meet Grover and get to shake his hand. He changed the guitar forever. I wish I could own a real San Dimas 2HB with Floyd Rose just exactly how he made them for my hero’s who rocked the Sunset Strip clubs back in my younger years. To me Grover Jackson is a legend who made his mark in rock n rolls history.
Firstly, Marc, Congratulations on the new show. I missed it live due to work, but caught the playback and absolutely loved it. I see this becoming an AMAZING show in the future, and your partnership with Mr. Friedman was a fantastic choice : ). Mr. Grover Jackson is an absolute LEGEND, and I must say that I have owned some amazing guitars in the past that were THE REAL Jacksons, that he was involved in making. The stories were fantastic! Especially the ones about Randy Rhoads who, was, and still is today (for over 25 years) my first "guitar hero" and my main influence for playing the instrument. Best of luck to both of you with the new show. I'm gonna try my best to catch some of them live as well : )

Mister Jackson, a true icon and maker of some legendary guitars.
I remember that if you wanted a Floyd Rose on a Jackson instead of the ubiquitous Kahler, you had to order the Floyd from Kramer and then send it to Jackson yourself to have it on your guitar... Kramer absolutely would not sell any Floyd Rose bridges to Jackson Guitars. Kramer would also demand to know what brand of guitar you were installing a Floyd on, as they would refuse to sell you a Floyd Rose if they knew you were using it on a Jackson. The competition was ruthless, and Jackson was influencing EVERY guitar company at that time. It's rumored that this caused friction between Floyd Rose and Kramer, and is what pushed him to license his bridge. Glad Grover talked briefly about this, although didn't go into this detail about the story.

I am one of the Happy people who play an Friedman Dirty Shirley 40 W Combo , played several amps before , and the DS is a Class of it´s own ! Its a very Intresting Interview .. Cool, Where can i get a Jackson Sofa ? :-D, I know why i fell in Love so badly with Friedman Amps ,i like all these Classic Rock /Hard Rock Guitar sounds , old Marshall Plexis JCM 800 Super Lead (= Friedman Brown Eye on Stereoids). And the MIDS @these amps are just PHANTASTIC so Unique , so 3 dimensional , the Guitar Model comes through VERYClear ,these Amps are just TOTALLY Awesome ... Those shows have made me really like Dave. I'm not a gainy player, but I like the look of some of the p90 Classic T's - and if Grover built it, I want it. What absolute gentlemen.
One thing that i know for a fact is every old Charvel i ever owned or played was built long after Wayne Charvel sold the shop to Grover. From what i always heard Wayne was not responsible for any of the Iconic Charvels that made them who they are. Wayne left before Charvel was even a production guitar.
Oh I wish Jackson Guitar Palace forum/webpage wasn't taken down. Would've been cool to be around when this was livestreamed to ask Grover to comment if he remembered some of those guitars listed on the page. They did amazing work tracking serial numbers, legendary guitars, even build order tickets, pictures and stories of those guitars on the website. Jackson did some amazing guitars back when you didn't check out a list of models on the webpage and click purchase.
I don't know why Grover doesn't mention this but It was Karl Sandoval who built black and yellow "Bumblebee" along with Grover when he still worked for Charvel before Karl went off on his own and built Randy Rhoads his polks dot flying V that same year 1979 while Randy was still in Quiet Riot shortly before he joined Ozzy. There is a picture of Karl and Eddie outside rehearsal for the Van Halen II tour right before the photo session for the back of the Van Halen II album where Ed prominently displays the Charvel. That photo of Karl and Eddie Van Halen was taken after Karl handed him the finished guitar. Yes Ed had stated in Guitar Player magazine that he did not like that Charvel and could not get a good sound out of it and had even swapped pick ups on that Charvel and still sounded like crap lol Well the real problem Ed had with Charvel was that he found out Charvel were producing and selling "Eddie Van Halen" striped guitars without his consent and Ed went after Charvel so much so that Ed put black electrical tape on the Charvel logo of that original black painted headstock before swapping the neck for a another all maple neck with the unpainted headstock and that original Charvel neck went to Eds "Snake" carved guitar. So i can make a safe bet that Eddies statement of the "Bumblebee" guitar not sounding good was more due in part by his disdain and anger he felt over Charvel screwing him over like that and the Irony of Fender acquiring Charvel/Jackson in 2002 and later Ed inking the deal for the release of the Eddie Van Halen Charvel Artists Series striped guitars and eventually his own EVH line we all know today. You just never know how the things turn around lol.
I am watching the episodes sequentially, and I cannot wait for the episode with Steve Fryette (I have a Sig:X behind me, which I will have to sell in order to patent the electric guitar circuit I invented). I plan finance a Synergy SYN1 next month such that I can get Steve's module when it is released.
To me the Green Meanie is the greatest guitar, more significant to me than the Frankenstrat, as much I love that too. It's a shame Charvel didn't get the gig over Ibanez
Tried the friedman amps and guitars at late years winter NAMM. Man I LOVED them, Love slapshot movie too. Fargo, Snatch, One Flew Over the cuckoos nest. Speaking of crappy remake movies i worked on Overboard remake for 4 weeks this year as set dec driver, so stupid and bad i had to quit. :) True Story
Gotta say, the short trailer this week was very effective. I was super hyped about hearing Grover Jackson's interview and only then I realized it was the first show and had already happened years ago. So this is how it began. I kinda wish Grover Jackson would elaborate on his history with Eddie Van Halen now that the man passed away, but it would probably look bad to talk bad things about him just after the demise. Maybe he'd rather leave it under the stone in the past now that Eddie is not there to defend himself. Actually funny that Vai's page reads "IN POSESSION ON LOAN" about Green Meanie.
Watching this while setting up one of my 6 Jackson's that I own. Love it thank you for this history lesson. Love Jackson nothing beats a Jackson even the imports that lots of people put down have a superior design at least for my taste. Wow grover calling the new jacksons an embarrassment kinda hurts my feelings lol I like them. Some day I will buy a real Jackson.
Grover tends to re write history.and the new ones he had just started making,did not look very good,that is why he was all bitter! I have about 20 or 30 Jacksons,going back to the first ones made and a few of the first production Rhoads models and I have the new ones too! I'm like you,and I have dealt with Jackson and Wayne Charvel ,they have both made horrible business decisions ,but because of Randy Rhoads ,Grover is a multi millionaire complaining about all this stuff. He leaves out a lot of stuff that could get him in trouble ,and Randy designed the headstock ,and if it became big ,he would be splitting everything Randy and now his family!
When they went into mass production and began producing overseas, Grover made a distinction, Jackson were top of the line produced in the States, Jackson Professional were made in Japan of high quality parts, Charvel was intermediate and made in Japan. Charvette came later to market beginner guitars. Fender bought their adversary and have really half-assed about it. Charvel is now the higher quality of the two. Charvel/Jackson from the 80s/early 90s can't be beat.
Not all Bolt on's had the Charvel logo on them. There were a few super strats with the Jackson logo. These had both the classic Jackson pointy headstock and some had the small Fender strat head like the classic Charvels but say Jackson on the headstock. The red sparkle strat Steve vai is seen with in the movie "Crossroads" was a Jackson strat. The Logo has tape over it. Adrian smith's signature Jackson is a Charvel "So Cal" type strat with the Jackson logo. There are others that other than the logo are the same as a Charvel.
Great interview with Mr.Jackson ; one of my first electric guitars was a (really good) modified strat with a shark-tooth inlay'ed jackson neck. I still have it but it has a Fender maple neck now and not as thin as the jackson. I would have said Rory Gallagher for one of the most under rated guitar players ... but hey to each their own

80s San Dimas are really great! I have an SL1. Best neck I ever played and great tone. Almos any pickup sounds deep.

I remember that if you wanted a Floyd Rose on a Jackson instead of the ubiquitous Kahler, you had to order the Floyd from Kramer and then send it to Jackson yourself to have it on your guitar... Kramer absolutely would not sell any Floyd Rose bridges to Jackson Guitars. Kramer would also demand to know what brand of guitar you were installing a Floyd on, as they would refuse to sell you a Floyd Rose if they knew you were using it on a Jackson. The competition was ruthless, and Jackson was influencing EVERY guitar company at that time. It's rumored that this caused friction between Floyd Rose and Kramer, and is what pushed him to license his bridge. Glad Grover talked briefly about this, although didn't go into this detail about the story.

Those shows have made me really like Dave. I'm not a gainy player, but I like the look of some of the p90 Classic T's - and if Grover built it, I want it. What absolute gentlemen.
One thing that i know for a fact is every old Charvel i ever owned or played was built long after Wayne Charvel sold the shop to Grover.
From what i always heard Wayne was not responsible for any of the Iconic Charvels that made them who they are. Wayne left before Charvel was even a production guitar.
Thanks for the shout-out for Michael Hedges. Steel string guitar has two eras: pre-Hedges and post-Hedges. His influence is heard everywhere.

Oh I wish Jackson Guitar Palace forum/webpage wasn't taken down. Would've been cool to be around when this was livestreamed to ask Grover to comment if he remembered some of those guitars listed on the page. They did amazing work tracking serial numbers, legendary guitars, even build order tickets, pictures and stories of those guitars on the website. Jackson did some amazing guitars back when you didn't check out a list of models on the webpage and click purchase.

I don't know why Grover doesn't mention this but It was Karl Sandoval who built black and yellow "Bumblebee" along with Grover when he still worked for Charvel before Karl went off on his own and built Randy Rhoads his polks dot flying V that same year 1979 while Randy was still in Quiet Riot shortly before he joined Ozzy. There is a picture of Karl and Eddie outside rehearsal for the Van Halen II tour right before the photo session for the back of the Van Halen II album where Ed prominently displays the Charvel. That photo of Karl and Eddie Van Halen was taken after Karl handed him the finished guitar. Yes Ed had stated in Guitar Player magazine that he did not like that Charvel and could not get a good sound out of it and had even swapped pick ups on that Charvel and still sounded like crap lol Well the real problem Ed had with Charvel was that he found out Charvel were producing and selling "Eddie Van Halen" striped guitars without his consent and Ed went after Charvel so much so that Ed put black electrical tape on the Charvel logo of that original black painted headstock before swapping the neck for a another all maple neck with the unpainted headstock and that original Charvel neck went to Eds "Snake" carved guitar. So i can make a safe bet that Eddies statement of the "Bumblebee" guitar not sounding good was more due in part by his disdain and anger he felt over Charvel screwing him over like that and the Irony of Fender acquiring Charvel/Jackson in 2002 and later Ed inking the deal for the release of the Eddie Van Halen Charvel Artists Series striped guitars and eventually his own EVH line we all know today. You just never know how the things turn around lol.

To me the Green Meanie is the greatest guitar, more significant to me than the Frankenstrat, as much I love that too. It's a shame Charvel didn't get the gig over Ibanez

Tried the friedman amps and guitars at late years winter NAMM. Man I LOVED them, Love slapshot movie too. Fargo, Snatch, One Flew Over the cuckoos nest. Speaking of crappy remake movies i worked on Overboard remake for 4 weeks this year as set dec driver, so stupid and bad i had to quit. :) True Story
Gotta say, the short trailer this week was very effective. I was super hyped about hearing Grover Jackson's interview and only then I realized it was the first show and had already happened years ago. So this is how it began.
I kinda wish Grover Jackson would elaborate on his history with Eddie Van Halen now that the man passed away, but it would probably look bad to talk bad things about him just after the demise. Maybe he'd rather leave it under the stone in the past now that Eddie is not there to defend himself.

Watching this while setting up one of my 6 Jackson's that I own. Love it thank you for this history lesson. Love Jackson nothing beats a Jackson even the imports that lots of people put down have a superior design at least for my taste. Wow grover calling the new jacksons an embarrassment kinda hurts my feelings lol I like them. Some day I will buy a real Jackson.
Grover tends to re write history.and the new ones he had just started making,did not look very good,that is why he was all bitter! I have about 20 or 30 Jacksons,going back to the first ones made and a few of the first production Rhoads models and I have the new ones too! I'm like you,and I have dealt with Jackson and Wayne Charvel ,they have both made horrible business decisions ,but because of Randy Rhoads ,Grover is a multi millionaire complaining about all this stuff. He leaves out a lot of stuff that could get him in trouble ,and Randy designed the headstock ,and if it became big ,he would be splitting everything Randy and now his family!
When they went into mass production and began producing overseas, Grover made a distinction, Jackson were top of the line produced in the States, Jackson Professional were made in Japan of high quality parts, Charvel was intermediate and made in Japan. Charvette came later to market beginner guitars. Fender bought their adversary and have really half-assed about it. Charvel is now the higher quality of the two. Charvel/Jackson from the 80s/early 90s can't be beat.
the new Jackson American series is mind-blowingly good. The MIJ series is also absolute quality. @@MrSoulauctioneer

Well damn I wanna hear the Jackson/Charvel story of how it went awry..
Not all Bolt on's had the Charvel logo on them. There were a few super strats with the Jackson logo.
These had both the classic Jackson pointy headstock and some had the small Fender strat head like the classic Charvels but say Jackson on the headstock.
The red sparkle strat Steve vai is seen with in the movie "Crossroads" was a Jackson strat. The Logo has tape over it.
Adrian smith's signature Jackson is a Charvel "So Cal" type strat with the Jackson logo.
There are others that other than the logo are the same as a Charvel.

Great interview with Mr.Jackson ; one of my first electric guitars was a (really good) modified strat with a shark-tooth inlay'ed jackson neck. I still have it but it has a Fender maple neck now and not as thin as the jackson. I would have said Rory Gallagher for one of the most under rated guitar players ... but hey to each their own
haha im playing a Charvel with the neck replaced w/a thick Warmoth neck. I have long fingers.
