Using Curves to Set WHITE, MID GREY and BLACK point in Affinity Photo

- Learn how to set the white. grey and the black points using Affinity Photo. Photoshop has tools in the curves panel to assist you with that, which is missing in Affinity Photo, however we can easily do this manually.
Setting these points will give the image, most of the time, a much better look, especially flat looking images.
For advanced users (and for a faster workflow), instead of creating boxes with the colors , you can set 3 separate sample color points directly on the image and work from there.

I tried and it worked very nice. Also I tried with Gradient Map, using pure white, mid grey and pure black. I used overlay for the blend mode and I applied a curves adjustment at the end.

Interesting. I use add layer, blur filter. Using Color balance, I set the histogram for this blur layer to have all RGB chanel at same.

Thank you for this comprehensive video. This helps a lot in transitioning from PS to AP.
Another area I’m having difficulty adapting to in AP are luminosity masks. I see the similarity between “blend if” and the “blend ranges” but a video on the subject would be appreciated, particularly if it’s possible to create luminosity masks to preview the adjustment desired.

Hello and thank you not only for this most helpful video but for the countless others you've posted too. I'm getting on in years now and I've recently converted to mirrorless to try and reduce weight problems with my kit, I've recently purchased Affinity Photo too and I'm very impressed with it. I've hit a snag in following this video as I don't understand how you created the three boxes and apparently the three layers that go with them. Do you have another video you can point me to that shows how this is done? Kind regards from the UK Oliver.
Thank you very much for your feedback! I am also looking into a mirrorless camera btw :) I created the 3 boxes by using the rectangle tool (so i just have drawn 3 rectangles on top of the image). Hope this helps!

If you're thinking of going mirrorless may I suggest you give the Canon M6 MkII a good coat of looking at I find it difficult to find the words to express how impressed I am with this camera and my experience goes all the way back to the original Canon 7D. It must surely be the most underrated camera ever its completely changed my approach to photography. Kind regards Oliver.

Could you show the way to do the same on Ipad version?
Sadly, the iPad version does not have the info panel. It might be possible by using fill layers and difference blend mode though, however this will be quite painful to get it work... i have not tried, but will give it a shot.
@@Graphicalfinity Yep, just tried you method on ipad version, following same sequence. Only the thing, every step of changes in Curve adj, need to control through Colour studio… Most important - it works with fantastic result.
I tried this method which really intrigued me but the results were so dark the image was not usable even when I reduced the opacity. I used the threshold technique to ID the white and black points so I was wondering if several years of affinity updates would have an impact on this methodology.

At 2:04 you are zooming in to get your sample. How do you zoom in? LOL sorry can't find it! Thanks for the tut, this process was taking too long before.

Suggestion : ... It's perhaps more rapid to find the 3 colors with creating a local palette with only 3 colors ? ...
Yes you could, however 2 disadvantages imho:
1. You can only use an external image if you want to specify the number of colors when creating a palette (which kind of forces me to save the current document and so on..)
2. The mid tone color would probably work, but the shadow and highlight colors are averages and i am guessing these would be less useful, as you want these to be close to the extreme values.

Wouldn't you get similar results by just adjusting the whitepoint to the brightest part and blackpoint to the darkest part in a levels adjustment?
Thank you for the feedback. In theory you could achieve similar results with a levels adjustment, if you do adjust it per channel, but it would be very difficult to adjust the mid (gray)point. Secondly the changes you make in Levels will always be linear where as in the curves (as the name also states) you can have curves, for better finetuning. Hope this helps

Sadly not this way as the iPad version does not have the possibility to set markers.
Is it possible to set three sample points simultaneously? If so, that would shave a little bit of time off the process.

@@ndon85 In the "Info" palette, click on the top left menu icon and select "Add New Sampler". You can add multiple samplers and position them on your canvas.

It's not that hard:
Add a keyboard shortcut (I use shift+D) to automatically set the foreground colour to 50% grey.
Next just save an Affinity Photo file with the layer group (white, grey, black) and use that whenever you need it again.
By the way, getting to white and black is way easier than your method: just hit D and fg/bg colours are set automatically.

A great example of a feature that has been requested since 2015, and still hasn't been implemented. That's an insane amount of extra work for something Photoshop does with one click. No thanks. Hopefully Affinity will start listening to their customers one day, but I'm not holding my breath.
