What if the person you need to forgive is dead?

That is a great question. You can forgive anyone anywhere at anytime. Forgiveness is the thing that sets YOU free. It does set them free too however in this situation it makes it really easy to show the part of Forgiveness that more people have a hard time understanding. Forgiveness is just as valuable to you the one who gives it as it is to the one receiving it. It's freeing to just let go of the bitterness and anger you hold on to about that debt they owe you.
Last thing I will say is think of regular debt as a bank. If someone owes you money as a bank and they pass. You will never get that money out of a dead person and the harder you try the more frustrated you will be. Maybe then you go to the family who probably didn't have anything to do with the debt and you get the debt from them. You still didn't get it from the person who owes you. That person is dead. Chasing that dead person is going to kill your bank if you don't stop chasing a never ending cause and decided to forgive it and move on. Maybe forgiving that debt also gives you a chance to forgive the debt you may be harboring towards family of the dead to. This sets you free. You forgive because you are owed and choose to move passed what they owe you. You are forgiven because God is owed and he chose to forgive you for something he could forceably take but he chooses not to. Grace in to you causes grace out of you. That gratitude causes grace to flow out.
Hope that helps! God loves you!

Forgiveness is for you. It's not for them. Repentance is for them. Since they're dead, they're not changing. Forgiveness means whatever your problem with them was, you don't hold it against them anymore. Basically, it's saying the person should be in heaven.
If you want to be in heaven no matter what you have done, then you need to have the same attitude towards others.
If someone is poking you with a pencil and they refuse to repent and stop doing it, you can forgive them from afar so they are unable to hurt you anymore. If they repent, you can forgive them and be near to them.

All things are delivered to me of my Father
Jesus said "All things are delivered unto me of my Father: and no man knoweth the Son, but the Father; neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him” (Matthew 11:27). God delivers all things to Jesus-his power, his spirit, his words-whether they be about Jesus himself or God himself. Everything Jesus does is for God and His will only. God’s word says that no one has ever heard God or seen God, yet most of the world goes against this and claims that Jesus is God? There are too many ‘Christians’ who have been brainwashed by the masses into believing this lie; this is why many will cry ‘Lord, Lord’ and not make it into the kingdom-because they do not know both the Father and the Son. Only those who read and do the will of God can enter the kingdom of God.
