Im an old school trooper , 1/503PIR Air Mobile-Air Assault. We used to use a poly-pad, rolled then let loose to expand and unroll inside out rucks to give it some shape. It also was good for keeping frost and some water from rain off your gear inside the ruck. That trash can might pretty much do the same I guess. But poly pad adds flotation; and its will be a LOT more quieter.
New school here (A CO 1-179) Maybe it's just a change in terminology, but I'm not familiar with poly-pad. Is that just the old man term for a sleep mat?

This looks like a GREAT idea. I just got back from a canoe/camping trip where I wished I had brought a bucket. This is going in my kit today! Thanks for the tip.
Saw the same video from Dave Canterbury and found my bucket at Walmart. I also made the pvc frame with under shelf to carry my dry bag of bedding materials. I upgraded the shoulder pads and the waist belt from next gen US gear. Its quite comfortable for my large frame!
Awesome mod man. I have a Turkish woodland pack. Same as the nato woodland pack. Basically a med Alice with 2 side pockets and 1 inside pocket. I'm gonna do the same but cut the bucket a little shorter to clear the inside pocket. Thanks for the video man
There is a shelf system for the alice frame. Once at camp you could remove the ruck itself and put the bucket/basket on the frame for a trapping set up and leave the ruck at camp
HEEEEEELLLLL YEAH. I watched the Dave Canterbury video as well and unfortunately I watched it about a month after I bought the 5.11 Rush 72 backpack. Great pack don't get me wrong...but what Dave pointed out that stuck with me..and that I actually found myself doing.. was trying to put every piece of gear in a special pocket, compartment, molle attachment, and what have you. The pack was heavy as hell and then when I went to find something I had to unzip and un-velcro every compartment and pocket just so I could remember where shit was. Tedious and just not practical for what I had envisioned in my plan. At the time it was..but thankfully I learned a better way. This system that Dave taught us is just plain efficient. Plus..a new/used lg alice pack and a frame is like a third of what I paid for the 5.11. I searched all over the web for a trash container that would fit in my soon to be new backpack system..and I found it here. Thanks. Subbed.
Awesome man. I looked all over to find a can to fit the medium pack and finally found it at Target. Dave uses the large pack in his video which is easier to find a can for.
This trash can idea is a solid inspiration for my motorcycle sissy bar with a conventional pack. 1987: I acquired a 3- gallon plastic frosting bucket with lid from a bakery (free). Slid it into my ALICE pack. Made a useful seat at bivouacs. Doubled as water bucket, washing machine, etc. When it wore out. Replaced it with a pickle bucket ( green) . Same size bucket with lid is at Lowe’s for under $10. 😊
Update: kitty litter bucket with a hinged lid fit in my ALICE pack. Added piece of foam pad creates a camp stool and water-resistant storage. Thanks again for this great video that springboarded a hack of hack.
This is a good idea if you are carrying light weight items only, the only problem is with putting a trashcan inside the ruck for structure, you make it harder to properly load the pack correctly to distribute the weight properly for a heavy ruck. When loading the Alice, the entire pack is filled with our lightest, fluffiest gear, which gives it its structure. The radio sleeve located on the back wall of the pack is where you want to put your heaviest items at. This puts the weight of the ruck tight against your back and up high on your shoulders where it is meant to be. This way the ruck doesn’t feel like it is dragging behind you or pulling back on your shoulders (as long as you are also wearing the waist belt and chest strap). We then place our hydration bladder on top of the ruck under the flap to hold it secure with the top flap. If we are carrying additional heavy gear like an M-60, etc, it would be strapped down on top of the ruck over the flap behind your head. This way as you go to walk up a hill as you lean forward slightly, it causes all the weight to transfer right above your hips for easy carrying.
the only think that comes to mind is to be able to lift it, i thought about fitting handles to it wit a 1/2" rope, it will not add much weight but it will give you a better way to carry the bucket if you need to carrie something heavi or to lift it out of a water stream if you need to, hope you find this idea useful, thanks for the tip on this mod, is great....
Great Idea, I'm going to have to try that. Between the Trash Can and the Ammo Can I have attached to the bottom of my Alice it will make things even more accessible.

I have the large pack so I'm gonna see if I can find that can. Maybe since it's the large one I won't have to cut off the top but we'll see. I also am gonna put a shelf on the bottom wider than the standard cargo shelf so the bottom of the pack with trash can in it can rest on the shelf. Great vid!
If you have the large pack then I think a standard trash can will work fine. The medium is a little smaller thats why I had such a hard time finding one that would fit.

I would cut it down maybe around half of that. Drill holes in it, and make paracord, or rope handles. And I'm looking for a more sturdy can (if possible). Other than that, I don't see it as useful for carrying water. That could hold water, yeah. But I'd much rather carry a half bucket to camp
