    Im an old school trooper , 1/503PIR Air Mobile-Air Assault.
    We used to use a poly-pad, rolled then let loose to expand and unroll inside out rucks to give it some shape. It also was good for keeping frost and some water from rain off your gear inside the ruck.
    That trash can might pretty much do the same I guess. But poly pad adds flotation; and its will be a LOT more quieter.

    • @FloridaBoyBushcraftSurvival
      @FloridaBoyBushcraftSurvival  Год назад

      It does give it a nice shape, also doesn't add a ton of weight

      New school here (A CO 1-179)
      Maybe it's just a change in terminology, but I'm not familiar with poly-pad. Is that just the old man term for a sleep mat?

    There is a shelf system for the alice frame. Once at camp you could remove the ruck itself and put the bucket/basket on the frame for a trapping set up and leave the ruck at camp

    HEEEEEELLLLL YEAH. I watched the Dave Canterbury video as well and unfortunately I watched it about a month after I bought the 5.11 Rush 72 backpack. Great pack don't get me wrong...but what Dave pointed out that stuck with me..and that I actually found myself doing.. was trying to put every piece of gear in a special pocket, compartment, molle attachment, and what have you. The pack was heavy as hell and then when I went to find something I had to unzip and un-velcro every compartment and pocket just so I could remember where shit was. Tedious and just not practical for what I had envisioned in my plan. At the time it was..but thankfully I learned a better way. This system that Dave taught us is just plain efficient. Plus..a new/used lg alice pack and a frame is like a third of what I paid for the 5.11. I searched all over the web for a trash container that would fit in my soon to be new backpack system..and I found it here. Thanks. Subbed.

    This trash can idea is a solid inspiration for my motorcycle sissy bar with a conventional pack.
    1987: I acquired a 3- gallon plastic frosting bucket with lid from a bakery (free). Slid it into my ALICE pack. Made a useful seat at bivouacs. Doubled as water bucket, washing machine, etc. When it wore out. Replaced it with a pickle bucket ( green) . Same size bucket with lid is at Lowe’s for under $10. 😊

  • @WH6FQE
    @WH6FQE 11 дней назад +1

    This is a good idea if you are carrying light weight items only, the only problem is with putting a trashcan inside the ruck for structure, you make it harder to properly load the pack correctly to distribute the weight properly for a heavy ruck.
    When loading the Alice, the entire pack is filled with our lightest, fluffiest gear, which gives it its structure. The radio sleeve located on the back wall of the pack is where you want to put your heaviest items at. This puts the weight of the ruck tight against your back and up high on your shoulders where it is meant to be. This way the ruck doesn’t feel like it is dragging behind you or pulling back on your shoulders (as long as you are also wearing the waist belt and chest strap).
    We then place our hydration bladder on top of the ruck under the flap to hold it secure with the top flap. If we are carrying additional heavy gear like an M-60, etc, it would be strapped down on top of the ruck over the flap behind your head. This way as you go to walk up a hill as you lean forward slightly, it causes all the weight to transfer right above your hips for easy carrying.

  • @georgebl6501
    @georgebl6501 5 лет назад +7

    the only think that comes to mind is to be able to lift it, i thought about fitting handles to it wit a 1/2" rope, it will not add much weight but it will give you a better way to carry the bucket if you need to carrie something heavi or to lift it out of a water stream if you need to, hope you find this idea useful, thanks for the tip on this mod, is great....

    I have the large pack so I'm gonna see if I can find that can. Maybe since it's the large one I won't have to cut off the top but we'll see. I also am gonna put a shelf on the bottom wider than the standard cargo shelf so the bottom of the pack with trash can in it can rest on the shelf. Great vid!

    Hey Matt, I'm seeing several problems with this right away. I'll Grant that would be great for unwieldy, hard items with sharp corners, but other than that I honestly don't see the point. What if you take a dunk in any water, let alone a fast moving source like a river or a coast line, and it takes a while to get out? There's drain holes in military gear for a reason. Now you're tired, maybe exhausted and there's a whole lot of water weight trapped on your back, making it a whole lot harder to crawl out to safety. I'll say the same thing that I posted on your military butt pack video; a plastic container with an airtight lid would be a much better choice. I carried a square Tupperware one in my musette bag as a kid in the dessert country. Took up half my bag and left half free for other stuff. Jmho.

    Why you use a 2mm. Rod. In U shape. Put the ends at the back bottom. At a 45 d up to the front top. Make 90 d along the front 90 d. Down to the back. Round the ends. So don't poke throw the pack. Top you can. Sew or wire in. Hold the bag open light weight mod. Save 1 1/2 lb. Kick the bucket

      Good idea. It would be hard to carry water, firewood, supplies, etc. with a wire frame though...

      If you get filled with water that will weigh enough to take you under.
