In this video I'm going to be sharing with you my insights and emotions, what our teacher said to us etc at this Grade 9 rehearsal of our centre combinations for our graduation ballet exam at Vaganova.
These exams are renowned for being tough and part of my whole philosophy is sharing what it is really like!
I will share my emotions felt amongst other things!

Spectacular. You’re such a beautiful dancer. I trained and danced during the Soviet Era so we knew absolutely nothing about the [then] Kirov Ballet or School. We only knew what Nureyev brought to our attention and bootleg videos. The Bolshoi would perform in New York once a year. We knew Plisetskaya, Ulanova, Bessmertnova, …such a long time ago. Obviously no one from the West trained in Russia. What fantastic training though! What an experience. I was lucky because my teacher was a nephew of Olga Preobrajenska (a Russian expat from Paris), used mostly the same methods and very strict and exacting. My dream was to go to the Royal Ballet. At the time no Americans were permitted to join - only Brits and dancers from the Commonwealth. I auditioned and was the only American at the School. This was during the last few years of the Nureyev/Fonteyn partnership. It was the top company in the west. For you was it the desire to have the best of the best to train at Vaganova? When I think of companies today and the greatest ballerinas, I cannot think of any truly great American ballerinas. The RB’s principal dancers are not thoroughly astonishing (and many aren’t British). Can you compare Nela with the plethora of dancers at both the Mariinsky and Bolshoi.
The quality of training (and results) at Vaganova is just incredible - obviously. (I can’t even imagine how many great dancers we never saw in the West.). The expectation and the level of excellence demanded of those few lucky students right from the start. Training like this doesn’t really exist in the USA, for sure. A completely different kind of mentality. As you said, from the earliest age, the head, shoulders, arms, épaulement, etc. are already part of the training. It’s not a fun after school activity. It’s a privilege and a way of life: it’s not fun…and forget about instant gratification and positive feedback. The expectation for perfection starts early. I noticed at Vaganova the foundational steps must be executed ‘perfectly’ before the next steps are introduced. Many American schools introduce steps and combinations the kids cannot possibly do correctly…because kids would complain they’re bored. Thank you for posting these amazing videos and your commentary. Plus we get the pleasure of watching you dance.
I am so very impressed by your comment. It is so thoughtful and honest. I'm Russian American and I could not agree more with what you said about how the training in the United States and most of the world is on a completely different spectrum than the training in russia. Ballet and any type of artistic sports including figure skating is a form of national pride it's a national treasure for them. It's not some fun after school activity, it is a way of life and of great historical and cultural significance for them.

What was your experience like after graduating from Vaganova? What made you leave Russia? (If that’s something you are comfortable talking about of course.)
i dont speak english very well but i just found your channel and i really love these videos, they feel really intimate, like we're having a conversation! and your passion for dance is very visible through the screen, it actually made cry the way you seem to be very conected with everything that happened to you while you where in vaganova haha and the fact that you share those experiences is so inspiring!

Theybr great problem.i dont understand russian but its the best ballet school to study
Is it just me but there is something a bit different about your épaulement and arms compared to the other dancers? Like at 4:42, I don’t know if it’s the angle or what but the girl In front of you in the short tights ending below the knee - she and your épaulement look really different. Her chest is more open and her right shoulder more down and open and her arms are a lot softer. I don’t know if it’s a style difference since you obviously have amazing technique, like your extensions, wow. It must be tough being so tall and long limbed but you have great control of your limbs too. So it’s more just like a presentation difference, hard to put my finger on it exactly. Same at 8:35, compared to the others, you’re much more upright in your back, basically straight, whereas others are much more curved in their upper spine. Is it because of your injury? Or like at 10:03 - your shoulders seem higher and the back of your neck looks a bit crunched.
I really don’t mean to criticize - I know I am in no position to, and if you were not instructed by your instructors on these points, then that is what matters. I just wanted to know if what I am noticing is even legit and would love your insight.
Yes, these small details are forming since 1st grade:) that’s why a professional can always tell if the girl is a “true” vaganova or not 😊
The music in the beginning is always so loud compared to your talking voice. I always have to adjust the volume from the music to you talking. You talk so soft and low in volume that I have to turn the volume all the way up to hear you. But then in the end or the beginning of the next episode, it gets so loud because the music is so loud. If you can make the volumes match better it would be much easier and more pleasant to watch. Thanks.
