400 mile pull post Thanksgiving weekend... definitely upgraded performance over the BlueOx. Thrilled with this hitch.
I have put about 1,500 miles on this same hitch in the last year. It is a very good hitch in my view. We tow with a f150 and the sway control is about as good as you can get without going with a Hensley.
One thing I have noticed is that it does start making noise when turning after a bit. I thought greasing each side would eliminate that sound but I am either doing it wrong or the noise is just something I have to live with.
@@benford574 You want the noise. That means the friction part is working. Grease will make it slippery and take away some of the sway control.
We have this on our new (June 2020) Winnebago Micro Minnie towed by an F-150. It has been a solid performer for us, so no complaints. It does make creaking and popping noises at the friction points at times but I think all of this type do that. The first time you hear it, it is startling but once you know what it is then no big deal.

As good as this hitch seems to work, there is one aspect of what I saw in this video that I would NOT EVER have on ANY towing setup. That aspect is the added distance behind the towing vehicle to the tow ball that occurs with that slide-in insert into the tow bar socket - WAY to far in my humble estimation 'coz it gives the trailer added leverage over the towing vehicle in a sway situation.
The closer you can keep the tow ball to the rear of the towing vehicle, the less leverage the trailing unit has over the towing vehicle.

I have the curt tru track hitch. It’s a very easy and reliable hitch. I owned it for 6 years know.Curt stands buy there warranty. I had a ball bearing that went bad. All I had to do is call them send a picture of the problem and a new one was sent within a week. Easy to adjust. Just word of advice any of the holding pins face them toward the rear so if you hit some debris it won’t knock it out. Safe travels.

When installing, it's a lot easier to put the bottom bolt in first, then the top. That way, when you are installing those tilt cams you aren't fighting with the weight of the hitch.
Just bought this hitch. I remembered this video from some time ago, watched again to better familiarize myself with the install, challenges and attributes. Will keep y'all posted following my 3-4 day cargo haul from CA to TN.
I love my curt tru trac. It’s quit and don’t have any noise at all. Just keep it greased and put some on the ball bearing like the instructions show. Made a big difference on my outback super lite weighing 8900 pounds.
Love my curt trutrack, took my towing experience from white knuckling to total confidence!
We had Equalizer with our TT. Curt is similar...it will get louder once paint wears and you have a little rust. Not bad and to me the noise tells me it's working.
No doubt it will get louder, but not something to worry about. You can lube it, but like above, the sound let's me know it's working.

Count to 12. Perfect. I do the same with Husky Centerline on 8000# TT. Much more tedious to connect, and tremendous popping.

Looks and hooks up just like my Equalizer. For the bars, just keep kicking the trailer up when it’s hooked to the ball and you won’t have to use the wrench. Easy peazy after that. Good video and thanks for sharing new stuff out there for us.
Very nice video. For some noobs you could have spent some time about hitch head angle and weight distribution but I liked that you went through set up so we could see. The Curt looks very much like my Husky Centerline TS which I've been happy with. It takes out a lot of porpoising and chucking!

Great video but my understanding for the tilt adjustment you show is not to fine tune the ball height but is to adjust how much lift you can get out of the tension bars. That's why you measure the front vehicle height first to make sure it is level. Not a complaint but wanting to know if I misunderstood.

I have seen a few showing them being loaded, never unloaded.
I have a Curt hitch, I have the system set up so I can load and unload the bars with my hands, but I want to add a little more load to them
I’ve never had one bind on me that bad. I simply use the tongue jack to relieve the tension.
@@WanderingWeekends I have this hitch, it works good, but I have it set so I can load and unload it by hand when the system is raised up. I want to go to the next setting but its a big jump in tension and I need the bars to load it. I just can't find a video showing someone using the bars to unload it. I suppose you could simple kick the bars off and let it snap down.
I do not miss those days of hooking up my TT WD hitch. I thought the shank you are using is too long for my comfort, seemed like it was flexed a lot, me I would get a short one. Great video, keep em coming
The longer shank provides a better angle for turning without pinching the tongue on the bumper.

Myles Hansel another use for the long shank would be if you wanted your tailgate to come down without hitting the power Jack
Can you drop your tailgate down with that longer shank? That would sure be a plus. Also curious which weight your Curt hitch is designed for? I have the same trailer as you and my 1000lb tongue weight rated Equalizer E4 is overloaded at this point.
I have the TruTrack on a Open Range 21RBS with an overall length of 27 feet and I am loaded to about 6700 lbs (Trailer GVWR is around 7300 I believe). This is tow with a F-150 which has the tow package with a tow rating of up to 12,000 pounds. And the Tru Track makes towing it an absolute dream. Most of the time I don’t even notice the trailer on the back. I could have gone with a less beefy hitch, but it was worth the extra bucks to make this set up absolutely fabulous both on the highway and when going up forestry roads.
Congratulations. We’ve had the exact same model (except for whatever reason my receiver tongue is considerably shorter) for 2 years and it’s always worked great, whether on our old 2018 Heartland Pioneer or our current 2020 GD Imagine 2250RK. Drive safe and Enjoy!
Measuring before the vid it seemed I needed a 9 hole shank so Curt sent me one. 7 hole comes with the hitch. With the new truck I likely would have been fine with the original. Live and learn.

I have Curt TT #14500 for my Tundra and ORV 24RLS. The TT should always run quiet the anti-sway bearings and trunnions knuckles need to stay lubed or they will groan loud. There is a zirc for the knuckles and I use chain lube for the bearings. The occasional reverse or turn loud knock is from hitch/receiver slap that’s easily quieted with a 4” plastisoled u-bolt. I have to tighten u-bolt for each pull but the ride is silent and confidence inspiring. I really like my TT hitch.
FYI: The adjustment you made to solve height is primarily to adjust load distribution which will also affect how much hitch weight drop you have.
The weight of the hitch does count on the cat scales, so if they both work the same, less hitch is more of something else you can carry.
Great video and review thank you! Can I make a suggestion? When putting the cotter pin in to secure the bars, slide it in from the truck side towards the trailer (the way you put the pin in on the passenger side of this video) This will prevent stones from bouncing up and hitting the open end of the cotter pin, pushing it out, which could cause the bars to become unsecured. It happened to us once and we lost the pin. Keep the videos coming!

I have used this hitch for years. One piece of advise. Bolt torques are critical. I ruined one of these hitches by driving only 2 or 3 miles with reduced bolt torques while setting it up.
After setting the torque correctly, I marked the bolt heads with a sharpie and would check them routinely before and during a long trip. (Had to borrow a BIG torque wrench do do it right. Later, I asked some guys at Discount Tire to check the bolts too - they had the same BIG wrench.
I think that fine tuning adjustment is to set preload on the trunnion bars, not for hight. When you angle the ball down it puts more weight on the bars and vice-versa when you angle it up.
Yes and no… Adjusting the preload effects the height when completely engaged. More weight to the front equals a higher ride at the ball.

Great video Corey really liked the way you present the instructions for the hitch hookup. I have a equalizer hitch which I am very happy with but this hitch would probably be quieter because of the ball bearing but the noise doesn’t bother me. Great video!!
I have a curt hitch too and love mine. I use to sell/install tow hitches and I always liked curt products. I did a lot of research on weight distribution hitches and the curt always seem to come out to be the better hitch for less money. Side note I live in ga and have a grand design RV too.

I am having a hard time deciding between this hitch and the equalizer. What you think? Equalizer is obviously almost $200 more.
I am seeing complaints on the trutrack bending the L clips and bracket or gouging the bracket.
My Cougar TT came with the Curt Hitch. The dealer said that they adjusted it to my truck and trailer. Visually it didn't look right. Driving it the way the dealer set it up was a horror show. So I decided to try adjusting it myself. It took some trial and error but I got it perfect. It looks and tows perfectly now.
The design of the Curt is way better for sway control. It's not even comparable. This is the only other hitch I've seen (Equal-i-zer) that has 4 point sway control.

So one thing I noticed your pins that lock in your bars to the hitch (sorry I don't know what they are called) you have the U shaped pin locker deal going over the top, those should be run underneath.
I’m not saying you’re incorrect but why would it matter? I generally can see where something would bind or work it’s way loose but in this situation I can’t see where it makes a difference. My question is sincere.

Great video- can you provide info or link for the hooks you are using to connect safety chains to truck... great idea to ease hook up with funky Ford set up.
your best bet is to check out Tractor Supply or Harbor Freight for "D Shackles". I actually asked the manager if I could bring a few sizes out to the truck to see which one fit best. I'd be more specific but they don't have any markings on them.
I have to question part of your explanation. You moved the upper bolt inserts and said it moved the ball up and down. What it does is tilt the ball and head. Tilting more puts more load on the spring bars, less tilt means less load on the bars. This is like adding washers to the rivet on the Equalizer.
Have the lawyers from Equalizer called Curt with a "cease and desist"? My word they've copied a lot. Funny, I have an Equalizer and I'm considering a Blue Ox.
tilting the head on this hitch does both... I have a Equalizer as well. They aren't as similar as one may think.
Curious what your front truck wheel well measurement was with nothing connected, then with the trailer but without the bars. Lucky that you leveled out on the first try! My 16k Equalizer is a similar look, but I like two things about that Curt (a) the ball bearing feature, and (b) the locking adjustability. The Equalizer just has that nut on the bottom holding the angle of the head. Great video!
Hello. We love the channel. We have a 2019 GD 2800BH, F250 and Blue Ox Sway Pro like you. It's performed well, no real complaints. I look forward to more info in the future. Will be curious to see longer term use. Does it really help with the shucking/wobbling? How about when cars or rigs fly by you? This will help me determine if we go with the Curt or not.

Not sure micrometer testing is an entirely accurate measure of strength. Did you you weigh the two hitches for comparison? The Curt looks beefy but I think the Blue Ox is "engineered" with steel where it is needed and not where is isn't. The Blue Ox is a very hefty hitch. The Curt may be good as well but not sure your comparison is completely fair. Also, the chain connection on the Blue Ox makes adjusting the tension very easy.
Your points are fair but three issues are my real concern. 1. The Curt sincerely performs better. It’s significantly better actually. Obviously I can only speak for my particular setup. 2. There are two pins on the BlueOx where one cannot visually confirm whether they’re engaged or not. I’ve had a saddle disengage while under tow and not being able to visually confirm whether the pin was reengaged aggravated me. 3. Your engineering comment is simply a guess. You could be right. Hopefully. Maybe that is why the BlueOx is $150+ than the Curt. Luckily BlueOx has seen this vid, agreed it was fair, and has sent us their latest hitch to test. They’ve improved their design in my opinion. I’m looking forward to hooking it up.
You will find the adjusting cams will bend over time ,even with proper torque on the bolt.

Ok, so a few more months down the road. How do you like it still? We haven't made our TT purchase, but we're closed to a decision and have been looking at these various WDH with sway control. I like the fact that you don't have to unhook this one in order to reverse. This will be our first TT or pulling anything outside of using a moving truck pulling a car behind.

Mine is not a 5th wheel but do have the Curt and although it is only 19 foot trailer the value is the best. I also tow with my SUV which it does really wll no issues...I was impressed with Curts Advancements in towing equipment. I think Reese hitches just got beat badly... I have been a tow driver for AAA and the difference is like night and day... I agree...Go with the Curt these days...
We bought our first travel trailer and the Curt TruTrack back in September! I wanted the Anderson but it was on too long of a back order. So far I'm very happy with the Curt, it was kind of a pain to set up at first but that was partly because I didn't follow the directions well. For the 3 trips I've used it so far I haven't really heard any noise from it in the cab. Ride quality was great other than one time I was pushing the speed a bit on a rough stretch of I35. Make sure to add grease to those zerks and ball bearings. My only real complaint is the weight, its heavy but not terribly so.
Our Rig is a 23' Riverside Retro pulled by a Yukon SLT 1500 (the short version). Out hitch is the Blue Ox. On the 12 of this month (Feb.) my wife driving, we encountered out of control sway from a passing truck and we flipped the RV on I-95. I am done with the Blue Ox.

I have the same equalization/stabilization for our rig... it was awesome. Used it on our GD Transcend 30RBS from Wyoming back to Texas... I noticed your in Georgia. What part... we lived in Douglasville, GA, NE of Atlanta.

Very interesting review and it certainly appears to be a quality hitch but I'm not sure you were entirely objective in pointing out the pros and cons of both. I have used the blue ox on my RV and I have used a hitch very similar to the Curt although by a different manufacturer on a large cargo trailer. Some observations:
1) When you were measuring the thickness of the weight distribution bar receiver you are not actually measuring the thickness of the connector but rather the thickness of the lip at the end of the connector. We really don't know what the thickness of the connector itself is.
2) You point out, quite accurately, that this hitch is much larger and heavier than the blue ox. This may or may not be an advantage. I think a valid question is, is that extra mass and subsequent extra weight really necessary? I have never heard of a blue ox failing as a result of the lighter construction. Has this ever been reported to your knowledge? If not, adding additional extra weight to the hitch receiver is not necessarily a benefit.
3) The method of securing the stabilizer bar to the trailer frame has some significant disadvantages. There are two additional pieces on each side, the L bracket and the pin which can potentially get lost in the grass during connection or disconnection, especially at night, unlike the blue ox which has no removable parts. The stabilizer bar slides. Over the surface of the frame connector during turns. This very definitely becomes quite noisy and occasionally disconcerting as the hitch wears in. We typically put a coating of grease on the surface to minimize the wear however that then presents its own significant drawback in that every time you pick up the stabilizer bar you end up getting grease over your hands and frequently pants as well.
4) I have never found the inability to see the end of the locking pin on the blue ox to be a significant issue. In fact, if you watch the pin, as you rotate the cam it pops in visibly. I do agree that the pin that secures the stabilizer bar to the socket on the hitch has some drawbacks. After a couple of years and a bit of dirt and corrosion, it doesn't always slide up and down easily and you do have to give it a little jiggle to make sure that it is locked in place. I think the likelihood of it becoming dislodged is extremely low since the chain on the rear end of the bar would probably prevent it from sliding out however I do agree that this is an annoyance. I usually give it a shot of WD-40 to make sure.
5) Porpoising or surging when towing a heavy load over a hilly or uneven road is certainly an important issue with any of these hitches. If this hitch does present a significant advantage over the blue ox, that would be a really big advantage. It would be nice to see a more objective assessment of this characteristic such as running both hitches over the same course and measuring the amount of bounce produced.

My RV dealer installed the 15k version of this on my truck. TT is 9k empty, 11.8k max. It chucks like crazy when towing. They didn't grease it or use a 2 1/2 to 2 inch reducer. My guess is it's "redistributing" too much weight off the tongue. Is there an easy way to reduce the WD amount?
just curious why the ball is angled down for this setup. I typically completely vertical, sometimes pitched a tad forward. Does pitching it down prevent the ball from getting stuck when you unhitch or something?
Reminds me of the Reese I had; what a nightmare. It never felt comfortable the entire year we had it. I've since sold the truck/trailer and will probably never go back to a bumper pull trailer. Next rig will be a class c or small 5th wheel. You have a nice setup though. Wish you lots of success.
Which one would you recommend. Weight Safe or this Curt?
The cost is not a concern, performance is priority.

2 with reducer. Not much slop but I much prefer the 2.5. The reducer is a pain to deal with.
For you that have this hitch, can you back into a tight spot without releasing the spring bars?
I use a Reese anti sway equalizer hitch that works great but I have to stop and release the spring bars in order to back into any campsite.

@@happycamper5900 I would adjust the hitch so it is angled down a bit. That way the ends of the bars are spaced further from the trailer frame. This will give you more movement without binding when making tight turns. Most guide suggest the bars be parallel with the frame when you have the required tension on the bars for ideal weight distribution.
If I know my next campsite is going to be a tight back up- the one's where you are practically lock to lock- then I'll release the bars before I enter a camp loop. Usually stop in a general parking lot or near a ranger station. Really makes the process easier. On breaking camp, I'll wait until I get away from the campsite or even the park itself and find a safe spot to put the bars back on. You really need to hitched up square to the trailer or one side is going to crazy difficult to get the bar attached.
in your opinion what is the best wdh hitch with sway control minus Hensley or propride will be towing with 2021 chevy trailboss with standard bed 6.2 dry weight of camper is 6k# thanks and keep up with the good videos first time having a camper

Great vid , I want to get a 250 like yours in 6 months , hoping to find a year old one to save some cash . Have you ever had the death wobble ? Did you have any reservations because of horror stories about it . I know its not going to take you off a cliff , but everything i read about it Ford really doesn't know what causes it or how to eliminate it .
I’ve never experienced the death wobble. It’s extraordinarily rare but obviously it happens.
Do the weight distribution bars have to be disconnected in order to back up the trailer?

Nicely done and great info. I've been thinking about switching hitches and this video motivates me to take a hard look at this one. Question: I noticed when you "tuned" the height of the ball and moved the bracket it tilted the ball back towards the trailer vs straight up & down. Does this shift a little more weight on the trailer axles vs the front now ? TNX
Yes, the more the hitch is angles down the more "wheelbarrow" effect you'll have on the distribution.
The part of the hitch that goes in your truck is that original equipment or your own aftermarket piece? Does it allow your truck bed to open while hooked up?
The larger shank is a Curt part but not the shank that comes with the hitch. Yes, you should be able to use the tailgate on a Ford truck with this hitch. I can’t speak for other truck brands.

How is the sway control? We need to upgrade our hitch, thinking of propride or hensley for ultimate sway control.
Its pretty darn good... but if you can afford a Hensley or PP you may as well go that route.
I’m very new to the camping world. I’m waiting on my first hitch with is this exact hitch. But is 24 inches a good rule of thumb for the ball height or is that just what you found is a good starting point?
There isn’t a rule of thumb for this situation. All will be a bit different.
Park on level ground. Put a level on your trailer and set the tongue to perfect level. Measure from the ground to the top of the ball receiver. Thats the best starting point. It’s all about how high your tongue sits. For example, my trailer has a factory 3” lift on it so I sit higher than comparable trailers.
Looks like a good option for load leveling but I saw no provision for sway control. Does this hitch address that? I find that the sway control is usually where the noise issue is created.
They sway control is built it. The days of an extra ball on top of the hitch are long past.

We have this hitch. Can you tell me how much vertical play you have on your trunnion when you lift the bars? Ours seems to move on the trunnion shaft around a 1/4 inch or so.

It’s been awhile since we’ve used this hitch but most seem to have a tad of play up and down.
@@WanderingWeekends I ask because we have used this hitch for 2 or 3 years now, but it seems most of our sway control is gone. Noticed vertical play when we got back last weekend. A real head scratcher.
Blue Ox is way easier to set up. no questions about that. But the beefiness of the hitch head is nice on the curt. I agree with the pins securing the blue ox spring bars get loose , I have found that hitting the rivet down that secures the pin helps but it still sucks, I use a screw clamp around that area so that pin can not come up at all while traveling.
When istalling the hitch does the tow vehicle and travel trailer need to be fully loaded with water and gear? Or can you set it up with both empty?
However you plan to tow… so yes, loaded ready to camp.

Love our PP. Came from an equalizer. No comparison. And I don't think the equalizer is a bad hitch.
It maybe better than a blue ox but nothing beats a Hensley.
When you consider the safety factor over all standard hitches the price isn't that important.
I’ve never once felt unsafe. I think Hensley is a nice bandaid for someone who is under-trucked or someone who has an unlimited budget. For our application it’s overkill.

A Hensley hitch will never make up for a under powered truck or one that is to small. It just eliminates the trailer sway.
Well said Frank. I have a Hensley, my daughters tow with Hensley and propride hitches would not allow my grandchildren in vehicle without... no sway period.. all other hitches are inferior... end of discussion
I think I left the same coment on the blu ox. I have a Jeep Wrangler 4 door and I need extreme sway control. Our Jeep is a brick on the road. Sway just driving the Jeep. Would you reccomend the Curt for my tv?
man you installed that incorrectly lol. the adjustment you made to get to 23 inches made the bars put more weight on the front of your truck. that being said you didn't need to match that height anyway what you needed to match was the front/rear bumper height before and after and they should be the same. also your truck should have rake, them being completely even at the fenders doesn't mean the truck is level. i hope people follow the instructions better than this if/when they install it their selves. i do have this hitch though and do recommend it when properly installed.
Yes the ball adjustment did increase the weight distributed to the steer axle… which it needed. No, you are not supposed to return the truck to stock height. Leaving significant (not all obviously) hitch weight at the rear of the truck is crucial.
The best way to measure is front wheel well unloaded, front wheel well unloaded, distribute weight until you split the difference. Or just snag a Weigh Safe and you don’t have to worry about any of it.

Can you open your tailgate with the longer shank? I have the same grand design and my current set up I cannot open my tailgate.

Great info cory one question I currently use a equilizer e4 hitch on my 19 ram 2500 if I was to switch could I use my current shank which is a 2.5 shank with a 9" drop with the curt any info would be greatly appreciated thanks

I don’t disagree they should be crossed but state laws vary greatly. Do you have a reliable source for your claims? My research says Georgia requires chains but nothing about crossing them. Just trying to get facts straight. Your statement is very broad.

Wisconsin state statutes 347.47 paragraph 3 says; The safety chains, leveling bars or cables shall have only the necessary slack to permit proper turning and safety chains or cables shall be so connected to the towed and towing vehicle to prevent the drawbar from dropping to the ground if the hitch or coupling disengages. Meaning that if the towed trailer comes uncoupled it can't hit the ground, and the only way to prevent that is if the chain is crossed upon it's self.
So “Wisconsin law requires” would have been a better choice of words in your original comment. Here is Georgia it’s not state law and in fact it’s not state law in a majority of states. I cross my chains every time I tow. If they weren’t crossed in this video it’s because I hooked them up just for the vid. I’ll be sure to cross them even when shooting a video in the future. 1. What is the weight rating for that hitch? My trailers GVWR IS 11700LBS. I'm using a blue ox and don't really like it at all.

Chains don't look crossed at beginning of your video and because your hitch is so far out you actually loose stability just saying
I noticed you have shackles attached to the truck hitch. I also have an F250 and have the same issue. What shackles do you have and any issues or concerns with vibration loosening the bolt
Curt sent me these (I liked the black) but I’ve used the ones from Tractor Supply too. 4 years and they’ve never loosened a bit.
Not sure I like the what looks to be an aluminum piece you use for the adjustment. Looks like a weak spot. Also don't like towing with my ball not being straight. Your set up has the ball tilted forward some.
You didn’t get a true measurement of where the spring bars go in on the Curt because of the flange at the opening. The “fine adjustment” you did took the ball/coupler out of 90 degree alignment. I’m not an engineer nor do I play one on TV. Hell I didn’t even sleep at a Holiday Inn last night. Just my $.02
Very aware the adjustment placed more tension on the WDH bars... and in the end it was the correct adjustment. As far as measuring the Curt... if you ever see the two side by side it’s really no comparison.
@@WanderingWeekends what big jim flying meant was, the flange where the spring bars fit into the hitch head, the curt has a flange on it, what you should have done, is measured the INSIDE of where the flange fits, both are tube designed, but all you did was measure the outer flange on the curt, not the tube thickness itself !. both hitches are made very well, now all one has to do is decide which is cheaper priced i guess ?..lol.
Picked up my new trailer last week. I originally told the dealer I wanted the Blue Ox hitch but the dealer recommended the Curt. I then saw this review and told the dealer to go with the Curt. The day I picked up the trailer I went to a mall parking lot to practice backing up. The hitch was totally quiet in all the backup and forward turns. A few days later when taking the rig out to practice, I started hearing very loud groans and creaking noises whenever I did turns forward and backwards. Is this normal or is there an issue with the hitch? Its only one week old and I have only taken the trailer out 3 times to practice backing up. This is my first travel trailer so I am just learning.
Yes, ours groans some now too. Lets me know its working. My primary concern is performance under tow. The Curt definitely outperforms the SwayPro. BlueOx has a friction hitch as well and they've actually sent us one to compare. Looking forward to that one. TrackPro.
I went to the dealer today and I think the problem is resolved. They put ALOT of grease into the grease zerks, I mean alot .....and they also used Slide Out lubricant on the inner and outer ball bearings of the hitch. This totally solved the issue, I did tight turns left and right and did not hear any noise at all. I guess perhaps the hitch was not fully lubricated when I took possession. Anyway, a good thing to look at if anyone is experiencing the loud groaning and creaking when making turns with their travel trailer.
I was looking at this same hitch in Canada. Can you tell me what the ball load is on your trailer, and also the overall weight of your trailer? Just wondering if I could use the same model, or if I need a slightly heavier model. Thanks.
Our hitch weight is about 850lbs and the trailer runs 7500lbs...
