Brilliant video although I would recommend 3 additional steps when handling acid!!
    • Instead of plain water for emergency acid spills, use a solution of sodium bicarbonate and water as this will neutralise the acid rather than spreading it around and diluting it!
    • After pouring acid from the container you must ALWAYS clean the acid residue from the container side, base and around the screw top!
    • When you put your tomato and acid solution into a food type container like a food jar you must label it with acid clearly so nobody has a surprise Bloody Mary 😂

I am not a seed producer, but this is an excellent and helpful video for those who need it. Ben, thank you for taking the time to do this.

In case anyone else was curious, the regulations in question seem to be (EU) 2019/2072, in particular Annex V Part E which requires acid extraction or an equivalent method in relation to tomato seeds. The intention seems to be to prevent the presence of Clavibacter michiganensis bacteria.

The EU regulations were adopted into UK Law so apply here too. But DEFRA haven't worried too much about it in the past. However...

The current worry is actually Tomato Brown Rugose Virus, which is killed by the HCL treatment. There is emergency legislation in place to try and stop its spread, and that is being enforced.

Can it be performed with the help of acetic acid (diluted) solution in place of hydrochlic acid ??????????

No, it cannot, at all. It is a much less powerful acid. 5% vinegar would take aabout a week to have any effect. By this time the seeds will have germinated.

Acetic Acid - that's vinegar - has no effect on TBFRV. This is a demo for professional seed producers using weak Hydrocholric Acid to sterilise and extract tomato seed. Unless you are planning to sell your seed, you do not need to know any of the information in thsi video.

If anyone is about to add yet another comment asking if you can use vinegar instead of hydrochloric acid, then you will find the answer to your question not only in the video but also in all the comments below....
