Amazingly this enabled me to understand and fix my problem as I didn't fully understand the manual on the midi functions. To think a video nearly 30 years old is still useful is a bit bizarre, and I've only owned the SR-16 since 2000!
Hello, Quick question- when you have the SR-16 slaved to an external MIDI clock device (which sends the SR-16 tempo information), do you have a problem where the SR-16 only syncs to that tempo when a start/stop command is activated on the master device? What I mean is, if your master clock is set to say 120 bpm, and your SR-16 is set to 80 bpm, the SR-16 won't show 120 bpm unless you hit "start" on the master clock device. This is the problem I have, and the biggest issue is that if I decide to press "stop" on thr SR-16, it will go back to its previous tempo rather than staying in sync with the master clock signal. I want my SR-16 to be able to let me use start/stop commands internally and still keep itself slaved to the tempo of the master clock device when it is receiving an active running MIDI clock signal. I need this so that I can do live gigs on stage and be able to start/stop the SR-16 without having to reset/press-play on the master midi clock device. I can't seem to get this to work
How come none of these MIDI videos tell ya what audio outs from all this midi gear need to be hooked up for all this stuff to work together like this?Any thoughts thanx dudes.
Anyone know where I can see more videos of syncing drum machines w/ old-style keyboards like this? (not with analogue synths or anything, but just specifically these old type piano keyboards.. I'm intrigued by this).
This isn't an old piano keyboard. It's a sampler workstation. Also, you can do the same exact things with the latest synthesizer workstation. MIDI has been for the most part unchanged since 1983. And it's quite a misconception to think that it's for old things only.
I have the MIDI out from my OB-6 connected to the MIDI in on the SR-16, I have my OB-6 set as a Master (Midi Clock out) and the SR-16 set up as a slave (clock in ON) - Result: SR-16 does not sync... Bummer!
For what function would the OB-6 be sending a MIDI clock? Arpeggiator? Or does the OB-6 have a sequencer? Sorry, but analog synthesizers seem very basic and rudimentary as far as MIDI applications are concerned. Ensoniq EPS is far more advanced machine than any of the analog synthesizers. It seems like we kind of went backwards in development since Ensoniq is out of business (or fused into E-mu Systems) and Sequential and Dave Smith is back in business.

this helped me in 2021. still using the alesis sr16
Top stuff, have had the SR16 for over 2 decades and only just now using it with MIDI as I get into synthesizers more
Like the way he takes time to narrate. Great teacher.
Thank you. Clock was he word my brain needed.
Guy with the hair is like I have no idea what you're talking about but I know when I hear the drums
What he said at the end is exactly what im trying to do. Thats the truth man
''you press stop, and it stops.. wow'' this old video demos about music gear are all priceless
So with this setup, I can use the rhythms from my SR16 via the four style variations on my yamaha keyboard?
Greetings friend, a question, can you send rhythms to the alesis sr16 drums with the MIDI Ox program? Or some other program? Thank you
I like it
I just plugged in my midi drum pad but I only get the same 12 drum sounds. Do you know if it's possible to access all of the drum sounds on the SR16?
5:59 good ol' Rock 6

The usual way. Audio cables to mixer. Use mixer faders to mix. Etc.
Cool

I googled the “master and slave” and ended up here...
Ha!

You could try turning off midi out and midi thru, the manual mentioned something about the system becoming confused if both were turned off.
