Originally released in November of 1965, the band was not satisfied with the sound and re-recorded the track and released it in 1966, that version became a hit.
This was also the version that was played in New England during June of 1966 - around the same time as "Paperback Writer" / "Rain". For its moment in time, this version by The Leaves rocked harder than anything else on AM radio. I still consider it to be the best "Hey Joe".
I had this record as a kid and it’s great to hear it again after so many years. I still prefer Jimi’s version, due in no small part to the ethereal background vocals by The Breakaways. Still, The Leaves did an awesome job with this one!
I love this record from the Leaves even better than Jimi s' version! It reminds me of being at Its Boss Club- formally Ciros'. Slot of us dressed like The Byrd's (with Byrd glasses) They served Boos there and my sister and I were 16 or 17 back in the 60s. I remember some kids sitting and laying on top of tables. It felt like we took over the club. So that's what I think when I hear the Leaves record Hey Joe ! Thank you LEAVES...Marla
I agree & it's pitched much higher in the male voice than the Hendrix version & it's much faster. Not that faster always means better, but in this case it does. So, for those two reasons, it's much more "exciting". The bass line is killer.
I''d guess the LP record version would be better than here on RUclips, and better yet in person (if you were a block away! I love The Leaves music, and brother had their album.
0:55 Chester Powers didn't write 'Hey Joe'..Billy Roberts did. Roberts sued for rights to his work and won. My favorite version was done by LOVE [posted here on RUclips]
The FIRST guy singing (Jim Pons) is real good. The second guy is not so good & has poor diction. Nevertheless, the song kicks ass and the bass line & guitars are excellent.
You're crazy. LOL The song kicks ass with that driving bass line playing 16th notes. The guitars are excellent. The First guy has a good high voice. The second guy singing is not so good and has poor diction. However, the song overall is raw & great just like "Louie Louie" by the Kingsmen.
The "best version of Hey Joe" and there's gotta be over ,💯
* I like it better than the Hendrix ballad version. ☺
Way better than the rest
Give a listen to Love's version. Just as good.
A song of this stature has long been in need of such a treatment and the community lauds your achievement
The version of "Hey Joe" on the first album by Love (Arthur Lee) is by far the most dynamic.
Before the summer of love, this was the version that was played on AM radio in north and central Cal in the day. KFRC, KYA, KMBY and KDON.

and in our Los Angeles, KRLA and KHJ-98. Played OFTEN and captured the energy of the times.
...and on KFWB channel 98!
93 KHJ!
Don't forget KJR Seattle!
The singing is just okay but the music in this song is so incredible.
I had this record as a kid and it’s great to hear it again after so many years. I still prefer Jimi’s version, due in no small part to the ethereal background vocals by The Breakaways. Still, The Leaves did an awesome job with this one!
This version is the best. The Vocal, Guitars & BASS are outstanding. Yes, I like it BETTER than the great Jimi Hendrix version.
Maby becouse this version is original one :P
The first song to REALLY get me interested into music.
Dave Shultz The Leaves played at my jr. High for free at out lunch break. This was when hey joe was in the top 10 records for the week.

Also covered by Cher an The Byrds. So, I put those, this and the Roberts original in my Cher playlist. Thanks for the upload!
There is a marijuana leaf on the cover of one of the albums featured in this video. Excellent. That was 66 my friends.
I am a Jimi Hendrix fan, but I prefer this version.
the leaves, the byrds, the music machine.....all very good....all better than j. hendrix...imo
In Jr High I carried around a peechee folder on which I'd scrawled You don't dig The Leaves Your Outa Your Tree!
So cool!!
Love the bass track on this version.
Jim Pons, also was the bass player for the Turtles as well as, Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention
Brings to memory band practice in my parents' basement.
Awesome authentic artwork
🖤

The roots of Rock and Roll LOVE THIS!

7 & 7 is... Love's version of a higher yet, energetic Hey Joe.
Loves version was great but I like this one the best. LOVE was awesome !
It's just my opinion, but, I think Jimi Hendrix put out the best version!
Tfcrew yeah that's quite an oversight. C.P. was Dino Valenti's birthname (member of Quicksilver)
Turns out Roberts stole it from Niela Miller. ruclips.net/video/BEK2EDqxpcY/видео.html
LOVES Version also good. There are at least 17 versions of this I have seen on Internet, Think Ill get my blue steel .44
One of those songs that wasn't a big hit for anybody but just about every '60s garage band did their own version.
Cool garage band
In my opinion this version is much better than Jimmy Hendricks.
Great.....Too bad, Itunes doesn't carry it......
no one has this version on a streaming service that I can find. Does anyone know of a source? I only see vinyl on Ebay for $70.00!
This is practically punk rock.
Kicks so hard👌
Not even on Amazon prime music. Probably too good
Scrumdiddlyumptious!!!!!!!!
The Leaves did three versions of Hey, Joe. The first, released as a single, is raw and chaotic. Not Love, not Shadows of Knight, not Hendrix.
...and that kids, is how it's done.
I prefer "Music Machine"'s version of this song.
Not bad, but their earlier 1965 version was better, in my considered opinion.
punx

Hendrix's version is so much better.
Terrible vocals. Sorry???
The FIRST guy singing (Jim Pons) is real good. The second guy is not so good & has poor diction. Nevertheless, the song kicks ass and the bass line & guitars are excellent.
Awful version!
