  • The Piddle Oaks are veteran trees found deep in a wooded landscape in the Blackdown Hills in Somerset. In more recent decades they've been sheltered by the surrounding beech woodland, which has grown up around them since the 1950s.
Widening the halo around the group of veterans by felling surrounding beech trees is important to allow them more light and protection from the younger, faster growing neighbouring beech. As veterans of the landscape they'll retain their pride of place.
