It amazes me the wisdom you have for someone so young! I'm 60 and am learning so much from you that isn't art! Your painting is spectacular and watching your process always inspires me to go paint. I create to help with my depression, I can't tell you how healing it is...

I just thought that doing a painting is a way of saying.." I was here.." I'll watch this again. This is the encouraging that I need.

This is a bit off subject; but, I enjoy seeing how much paint is now on your working rug. It's getting so colorful.

Orla, you have unlocked so much creative energy for me. After watching your videos, I started to admit how much I love making. I chose to do 365 drawings this year and have done 210 so far. No judgement, I just make them, love them and keep growing. Thank you.

I create because there's something so special about the act of creation in itself. For art its so tangible and i can physically see my skills improving the more work i put in. Being able to hold a piece in your hands and knowing that it wouldnt have existed if you didnt create it? Thats real powerful 😊

Thank you for such wise sentiments. It’s not a choice for me to create, it’s a driven need and when life conspires to stop my creative process I become a stranger to myself, it’s as if parts of me need to express themselves for me to feel eventually whole, calm and centred. Expression and being in the creative process isn’t comfortable and for the majority of the time I have no idea what or why parts of me are focusing on a specific set of variables or subjects however, through a long stint in art therapy I have come to trust the non verbal parts of me, to listen and attend to them. This is sometimes hard in a culture that values rational linear thinking but the older I get the more I understand about the importance of the unconscious and the limitations of rationality and materialism.

Your healthy mindset regarding your creative process is so healing for me as someone who has been in a toxic relationship with my art journey for years now. I’ve become so fearful of my work and my process and the way you’ve freed yourself to your art is so beautiful to me. I crave that. I want that freedom, and genuine enjoyment again. I’ve become so fearful and restricted and I can’t stand it any longer. I won’t stop creating!

Loved watching this; seeing your process made me restless wanting to go pick up tools and make some marks! Why I create is a question I’ve been exploring for myself lately..and it does come down to similar things you’ve shared. Essentially a love for the process, that feeling of having made something from nothing (in a way it’s like connecting to that God-like source within us) and a connection to myself, knowing that that connection makes me approach the world and others in a lighter, fuller, brighter way. So it’s not self indulgent at all 😊

Orla thank you so much for all the inspiration you share, your art is amazing and your videos are so beautiful! For me I think that art is one of the very few things that help to focus my mind and it also gives me a sense of purpose like nothing else does (even though I am not a full time artist). I didn't create art for many years due to critical art teachers in school and lots of comparison with others, but as soon as I came back to my practice five years ago I instantly felt like home.

Thank you so much! And absolutely; I’m so glad you’ve found your way back to it, I get so sad hearing how much negative impact tutors can have on so many people’s early creative experiences and equally so happy to hear that people find their way back to it too ☀️

why do we make? its a good question. i guess there are lots of reasons, but probably the core of it is curiosity. a niggly idea that needs to be tried to see if it will work. obviously it never does fully, which leads to the next idea or iteration of the previous idea.
