    Having the right equipment makes a difference. I used to push mow my lawn, took 3 hours(it’s basically all hillside) then went to a cub cadet 1000, then it took 2 hours Bc the steering was messed up, found out the frame split, haha. So then bought a big dog alpha mp 54” deck zero turn. Mows the lawn in 45 minutes. What a difference

    Good video. If I were you mowing that tall grass, I’d put the chute up because the grass will diffuse across the lawn better and it would have taken less time to mow as a result.

    I have 17 years experience and am contemplating starting a residential mowing service by myself. I'll keep it manageable by not taking on too many accounts. I'm single with no children, so my thought is to work just enough to make a comfortable living for myself until I retire in about 10 years. There's nothing more gratifying than working outside to provide a service that most people don't like doing. Thanks for the great video, brother. Continued success from Massachusetts.

    I bought the 32" Wright knowing I'd be in back yards and there are a lot of gates that won't accept a 36" deck. My 32" has fit through all gates except one. Very nice compact mower.

    Narrow stand up mowers like that Wright 36" are the best solution for tight access yards like this one. Commercial walk behind, narrow stand up, and big zero turn. Good combination for commercial yard care.

  • @genemiller5699
    @genemiller5699 5 лет назад +1

    Small yard like that with that tall grass I start by doing a few passes around the perimeter and then I'll go straight down the center on high and make 3 passes wide down the center on high then drop deck down and cut it low and smooth on those 3 passes. Then mow the rest of the lawn on high then finish mow it on low and blow all the clippings into those 3 center rows and then use a tarp and a rake and rake it up. Only takes a few minutes to rake it onto a tarp for a lawn of that size. Drag it out into the woods or load on the truck

  • @7younggoldy4
    @7younggoldy4 4 года назад +3

    My technique when mowing high grass is mow a few lanes through the center then circle the yard and throw all the grass to a pile in the center of yard. Worked good for me with Snapper Pro 36"

    I usually get out one of my bigger weedeaters and go with a single line on the spool and drop that grass down to about 3 inches and let it bake in the sun for a few days and then come back and mow it and let it shoot out the side to chop it up a little finer and then bag it. Most everyone that lets their grass get that tall will be happy with just cutting it down and call back in a few weeks and just get it mowed without bagging it. I come back with a big mower and let it shoot out the side if it's still too much to mulch and tell them to get on track or find someone else to abuse.

    I have a 3-pt hitch flail mower.
    A flail will turn tall grass into powder in a couple of passes.
    Although that yard too small for a 33 hp tractor, the flail is the right mower for that tall grass.
    Around here, the state DOT uses only flail mowers on the interstate highways.

    Done a yard like this yesterday and had to weedeat about 80% of it. It was 7 acres but only about 3 was actually to be mowed,. Reason for most if it being weedeated was do to flower's, flower beds, and trees along with the house, a building, and privacy fence, and when I say trees I'm talking about fruit trees, and the limbs was maybe 2 to 3 feet off the ground and the grass was touching the limbs. Talk about a long day.

      Chris Rowlison our minimum for any type of yards tagged by the City is $250. The City charges twice that and any applicable fees. Once tagged by the city they have 10 days to get it done otherwise it’s contracted out and will cost the homeowner a more significant amount of money. We don’t usually bag on these yards, but do offer it, simply because 9 times out of 10, the customer doesn’t want to pay that amount. In mine and the customer’s opinion it was cut and they weren’t fined. We did get the homeowner as a regular customer so the yard should get much better in due time. Thanks for the comment!!!

    My neighbor let his rear yard get away from him to a height of 18". It adjoined my extra lot, so I knocked, wife answered, and I offered to mow it for free just to get it down to where he could keep up with it the rest of the summer himself. So I took my very old Craftsman lawn tractor, a 44" three-blade, 14 horse Kohler, mech trans beastie, and knocked it down in about three passes.
    The wife was amazed - she had been out herself with a 22" self-propelled push mower and could not even take a partial swipe without stalling. She actually gave me twenty bucks, but I was willing to do it for free that once as a good neighbor, and to keep the field rats and snakes away. Funny thing, four years later I bought an Ikon zero turn 42" for three grand and although mowing time for my 1.4 acres has been greatly reduced due to maneuverability, the actual cut quality was better with the Craftsman, which was so old I had rebuilt the steering gear twice already.

    Take the hedge clippers or pole clippers to help on your back. Cut it down a little below half. Then cut it. Or push some of it up and cut. Either or. But it will be a lot easier to hack that crap down to size first so the mower is actually cutting something and not just folding it over.

    Try a large grim reaper-esque farm scythe for the super tall thick stuff.A skilled person with proper scythe technique can swap down thick thatch faster or at least equal amount of time to a mower ...and the scythe blade is quick and easy to resharpen

    Question, west coast, central California, brand new sod. 90% is thriving. Same sunlight, same water same everything. Yellow patches it's dying, spreading, bugs? Or fungus?? I'm a small time part time gardener can't figure it out. Have reseeded recently waiting for results. Sprayed shit out of it with non toxic pesticide,. Opinion ?

    Tall jobs like that I'll roll through first with the mower then go blow things around with the backpack blower stand the grass back up go through it again opposite grain and you are usually pretty good

    The only thing I would have recommended is after the first mow I would have raked it all up and bagged it. That much cut grass doesn't decompose back into the ground very easily. It will take a lot longer for it to come back. It mats down and smothers the ground, like very thick thatch.

    • @roadrunnerlawns
      @roadrunnerlawns  5 лет назад +1

      You’re absolutely right and we stopped cutting because of this. But, as I comment now, the client has refused to allow me to cut again so I received the amount I asked for and she continues to let it grow. Rumor is, it was already tagged by the city again. I will not be cutting it again. Not my problem anymore. Thanks for watching and supporting the channel! ✊💯

    I found if you want it to look neat go in tightening circles throwing the cut grass to the uncut side. That way you mulch it as you go. Cutting across the previous cut was a good idea but the random directions just wastes time.
