      Likewise... I'd be more inclined to get something like a 1980s Yakima or Thule rack for the roof, then put an older style roof basket on that, if luggage/spare tires, etc, need to be hauled around. Unlike the trunk rack, it can be removed when unnecessary, and there's no potential for leaks from gaskets that eventually wear out.

      Ultimately, I agree with this sentiment, he should do as he wants. However, the truth is, it's kind of sad seeing how much work he put into making the parts that he fixed, he fixed SO NICELY, it seems almost a shame to leave it with the shoddy paint and dented door. The patina/ rat rod look is better suited to 20's to early 60's era cars and trucks. I'm disabled, my legs don't work anymore, and these vids of guys fixing up their cars makes me all giddy. I try to get my 18 and 22 year old sons to watch and get inspired to do the same. Dylan's work IS an inspiration. I think that's part of why it saddens me to not see him do at least a decent paint job. I have a suggestion for Dylan of something that I've been DYING to see someone do. Maybe Dylan can do an experiment. A proof-of-concept exercise for a "CHEAP" paint job! Replace the dented door panel and sand her down and prep for a "HAND PAINTED, RATTLE CAN PAINT JOB". But not just any cheap rattle can paint. I'd like to see him do this: start with a basecoat of Rustoleum extra gloss black. Then, a layer of Rustoleum high gloss chrome silver, to give it a near-mirror look, then choose a color from Duplicolor's "anodized metal" line of colors to make a low budget "CANDY/MIRROR" paint job! I'd personally do either copper or yellow. Or maybe candy apple red? Anyway, it would be a GREAT demonstration to see if an average guy can do a hand-sprayed, cheapo rattle can paint job that looks like a pretty awesome $6000 paint job for around $200 !!! PLease.... Give it a try!!!!! I'd love to see the results!

    "Paint won't make the car run any better"
    I love that and I'm typically the type to fix something to the point of it looking as good as it runs. But you can't enjoy a car while it's broken down on jackstands but with a fresh coat of paint. So much inspiration comes from just driving a project and that's (at least for me) what makes me want to continue fixing and repairing to have the aesthetic appeal match the mechanical functionality, but I appreciate just leaving the "flaws" for the story and history aspect. Love the channel and love the build, keep on keeping on!

    Dylan I heard your discussion about how great it is to leave the door dented and no new paint job. Those same arguments could have been used for you keeping all the original parts on the car. But every time you get some bling from Classic Industries, you happily install them and they do look good. I bet if they sent you a new driver’s door, you’d use it too. But, in my opinion putting on these new attractive parts on a car looking like the way you say you’re going to keep it, is like putting jewelry on a rotting corpse.

    Hey Dylan, I like what you were saying at the end about not having a flashy show car and just having something that you enjoy. I've been into cars as far back as I can remember. I think everyone has that dream of taking an old, beat up field car and turning it into a masterpiece. Unfortunately the reality for most of us is that things like that take a tremendous amount of time and a ton of money, neither of which are a commodity that's easy to come by. I've had cars apart in the garage for many, many years, working on it when I can and trying to achieve perfection. I think if I would have gone the route that you're going I would have had a lot more fun with my cars over the years. Fix up what you can, make them safe and reliable, and just drive them and enjoy! I love old challengers. Back In highschool in the 90s everyone was running scrappy old 70s cars, the only difference then was we all had primer spray can paint jobs to hide the "patina" we kept the rust and dents, lol but the primer made the mess all 1 color so if you swapped doors hoods etc, and made it easier to bs your friends you were going to get it painted soon. Do your own thing and screw what other people think, it looks a hell alot better on pavement than in a field. Id keep the luggage rack just to annoy people, strap something really weird to it like an old dynamite crate or something, Cool car dude!

    I like your pitch on the imperfect patina. About the door though, I see it a little differently. I also wouldn't paint the car. But I would be tempted to replace the door with another one, probably used, that isn't dented because the original lines of the car look better without dents. I hear you about the history and story of the car, and I respect your view. I do think guys go too far over the top in perfecting old cars sometimes. So I get the imperfection patina. Good video. Progress continues. She's shaping up!

      The history of the car was changed once he started repairing it so why not touch the outside, paint and dents. Even if keeping the patina, active rust should be killed and car should sealed.

    I kinda did the same thing with my 1977 SE "Bandit" Trans Am. Never painted a car before in my life, but I dove in and painted it right there in my driveway. Is it a perfect, show finish paint job? No. It has a few places you can see where I had to sand out a few runs and dig a few bugs out of it and three years later it has a place on the hood where it's bubbled up and peeled back a little and needs to be fixed, but I knew I was going to drive the crap out of it, so it didn't matter. I just couldn't see spending thousands of dollars on a professional job that would just get chipped and dinged up anyway. It looks good. It works for me and based on the tons of compliments it gets everywhere it goes it works for lots of other people too. Cars like ours were meant to be driven and enjoyed and I love being able to take it out and have fun with it and not have to be paranoid about any little scuff or scratch that might happen along the way.

    Love your videos, they're a great escape from the hard times of life. I'd probably skip the rack because it doesn't match the motif of the car. But if they match your personal fancy, do it! I understand on the paint and dent, issues-- do it your way, no arm-chair QBing here. You may be the kind of guy who likes quiet, hidden strength & quality vs loud fancy finish and overblown advertising. What matters is that you know what's inside your car. But these videos are a cool bonus to all of us.

So many stupid comments in some of your last videos of guys being over the top rude and disrespecting you saying they would have taken the car apart piece by piece and sandblasted every single part and completely painted and blah blah. Cool. There's lots of Challengers still out there that need to be brought back from the dead, if they've got an extra 80-100 grand to blow on a project to that scale and nature they should go and do it then and leave you to your car. I'm just excited to see you drop the 5.7 Hemi in there! I love my 5.7 and think it'll be a kick ass power plant for that car. Cheers!

    I understand everybody has their own tastes, but I think you will find most of us here do like original old patina. It adds character, but a huge dent I can't agree with. You can pull that dent out man, it is not going to be nearly as hard as you are making it out to be in your head.
    I have been watching so many RUclipsrs who take brand new cars that have been totaled all to hell, and some of these guys are only like 22 years old and take and pull out all the dents and everything and have a nice looking car. I love patina, but huge dents take away from the beautiful lines of the car.
    You could even remove some of the sheet metal and hammer the dents out a lot better than it is now. Then reweild it back. Hell, I am sure maybe some viewers here who specialize in body repair might offer their services to you to get some advertisements for their business. You can leave the original door paint and knock out most of the dents.

    • @Dolf260z
      @Dolf260z 4 года назад

      i agree. i love the Patina look, i would pull the dent out, don't have to make it perfect, just get it 90% of the way out, pull the door and the rocker, straighten the corner of the door thats bent out and it would be sweet as. Personally, I would also paint the engine bay the original body colour, and have the engine bay to a show quality winning engine bay finish, chrome everywhere, tucked harness, but leave it original and patina'd on the outside.

    I am enjoying every single bit of these parts. I can safely say that this is one of and if not, the best step by step restoration showcase of an old car i've seen on RUclips. The part number is in the title of the video and also in the thumbnail, your camera angles are great, the fact that you use a stand and do not hold the camera with one of your hands, taking us on a roller coaster every time you try to fix smth with your other hand is very professional, the sound balance is also good and dont get me started about your actual skill and your talent for fixing stuff. I enjoy the series so much and i cant wait for the next part of the restoration and also i am looking forward to your next such project. Keep it up with the AMAZING job. Stay happy and healthy!
