  • Rolling Mountain to DURANGO!
Featuring Blackhawk Pass, Indian Trail Ridge, Kennebec Pass, and a long, flowy descent into Durango. Every bit of this section of trail was new to us. Everyone says it, but it's true - the San Juan mountains are beautiful.
In 2021, four roadies attempted to ride the Colorado Trail with van support. After seven long, miserable days, we had to pull the plug in Silverton exhausted and devastated. Three of us returned in 2023 with improved mountain bike and bikepacking skills to attempt the trail again, this time choosing to bikepack unsupported. This is our revenge trip.
The Colorado Trail bikepacking route goes from Denver to Durango and includes 539 miles, 72,500 ft of climbing, and an average elevation over 10,000 ft. The high point is 13,270 ft and is part of a 20 mile section of trail that does not drop below 12,000 ft a single time. Bikepacking.com rates the difficulty as a 9.
Despite the rugged terrain, altitude, remoteness, and logistical difficulties, the views and experiences along the way make for an truly memorable trip.

This was a truly awesome video series. I watched one episode per night before sleep so I could dream of bikepacking alpine trails (it didn’t work). But now that I’m done I’m craving more!

Binged watch all the videos while watching the college football bowl games. I liked the length of the videos. They were edited down to about 10 or 11 minutes (except the last one) but still captured the essence of the rides. And while the soreness will eventually go away, you have memories that will last a lifetime. Outstanding! BTW…what’s next? 😝

Thanks for watching and I really appreciate the kind words! It's tough to toss so much footage, but that's exactly what I was going for with the length. Very happy to hear it worked for you.
I've got a few ideas for what's next, but I'm always looking for more ideas.

Congratulations! Great work. I like to do the CT in July 24 and it was helpful to see the segments for planning. You had very good weather most of the time. May i ask at what time did you do the trail? THX!

We did the week before and after Labor Day. July should be fine, but more likely to still see some snow and the time we went tends to be a little drier (although we had some storms on Day 1 and could see some bad ones on day 2 as well).
Good luck and keep a flexible plan each day!

Thanks for the excellent videos and showing the good time and bad times that happen in big ride. I really like how you start the videos off with the map and elevation plan for the day. I'm starting my planning to do the CT and find most of the videos riding Denver to Durango. I've ridden parts of the CT between Durango and Silverton and that area is no joke. You're at high elevation for a long time so I'm thinking of riding it Durango to Denver (It's 3k more total doing it this way) so I can hit it with a fresher body and would be able to time the weather better when in this area. Do you see any concerns riding it South to North or any other input you may have? Thanks!

I appreciate the kind words! I think most people ride and hike Denver to Durango because the more gradual elevation gain is a little easier to acclimate to. Climbing from 7000 feet in Durango right up to over 12,000 feet seems like it would be brutal. Also, the section between Silverton and Durango is probably the most beautiful part of the trail so I think a lot of people like to save it for last.
All that said, many have done Durango to Denver and the CT race alternates directions, so it's certainly doable.
One other note - now that Cathedral Cabins is there between Silverton and Buena Vista with a resupply store (which has just about anything you could possibly need), the longest stretch without resupply for us was Denver to Breck. If you can hit the Stagestop Saloon on a day it's open though, you'll at least have pizza to look forward to.
