The Klm pilot was not aware that he did not have permission, because when he asked for it, the ATC sound was interrupted by a different voice, so Kapitam only heard the word "Ok". At Pan Am, they took a different taxiway for a similar reason.

I've heard and learned about that crash since at least 30 years, and I've just realized something weird. Related to KLM Captain Van Zanten decision to takeoff, triggering the cataclysm. A true professional, he had been patient enough all that time. And then all of sudden he started *acting irrationnally* Somewhat as if a) the control tower and b) the PanAm - had ceased to exist. What is fascinating is when the radio in the back asks "Is it clear, the PanAm ?" "What ? repeat ?" "Is it clear, the PanAm ?" "Yeeeaaaah" (emphatically). If only the three KLM crew members had made a little break - briefing between them, and calmly asked the critical question *where is that goddamn PanAm plane* ?
I totally agree. Captian van zanten had tooken an advantage of him being in a higher role than his colleagues making the others be afraid to speak up to him
Mentour Pilot had a great mini-documentary about this incident that helps explain it, but long story short: Captain Van Zanten was very likely under pressure to get moving due to new flight time restrictions in his home country which could result in jail time if he violated them, even if it was unintentional. He possibly could have stayed at his intended destination and simply not flown back that night, although I'm sure a for-profit airline, even if it was KLM, would never let him hear the end of it. Plus I'm sure his family was looking for him to return home as soon as possible also. This is likely why he decided to do a full re-fuel while on the island; so he could drop off the passengers off at their original airport, and then fly back immediately.
@@unr3alGamingWhich is also crazy, even in the best case scenario it’s still damaging to the aircraft to land heavy with a full tank of fuel, or so I’ve heard.
