personally love how fingerstyle sounds and that's what I'm learning - what would make me happy now is more fingerpicking song videos on this channel!
Are you following my Song Channel? More fingerpicking song videos on their way there!
I’ve been playing for almost a year, just finger-style. I can barely play anything with a plectrum haha.
You can strum without a pick too. And much easier to combine both styles in one song.
@@charass1 Yeah, that’s what I’ve been doing. Recently learning songs like Bert Jansch’s Angie and Homeward Bound by Paul Simon and I love to incorporate strumming between fingerpicking. Especially on a steel string guitar.
Yeah it takes a long time.. I was the same as you, I played bass with fingers, then finger style guitar.. Years later I realised I couldn't play well with a plectrum. But no worries, I concentrated on plectrum playing and now I can do it very well, maybe better than fingerstyle! I'm sure you will improve once you learn it.
Just haven't practiced enough with it! 🙂
I think if you would do a beginner fingerpicking series of videos you would get loads of people here Justin :D
I actually have a couple of these videos! Will do a cool playlist with them. Thanks!
Almost done with beginner 1 course! You changed my life, I never thought I’d learn an instrument and now I’m actually decent at it 😊 thank you so much!
Amazing!
How long ago did you state d the beginner 1 course Because I'm still feel lost or not very decent yet or maybe I'm to judgemental to myself thanks and keep up this hard learning task but I will say very regurding hobby
What songs have you been playing?
@@ShinyFlakesShinyFlakes I belong to my church choir that is my goal learn to play and sing for God
@@aureliomartinez2633 I started in November 2020 and finished the beginner course 1 week ago. Moved on to stage 2 and im in love with the new chords
cheers
Justin you got me started 2 years ago with d chord, i haven't stopped yet.
In fact, now I'm able to give my own beginner guitar lessons. 🎸🥳
My first teacher did something in between both styles. She taught me to hit the base notes with my thumb and pluck the bottom four strings what's my other fingers. This helped me a lot when learning fingerstyle and I learned to strum on my own.
I’ve been playing for a couple of years and recently started fingerpicking. I find the fingerpicking definitely requires more coordination but so satisfying when you feel yourself improving. Most of my tuition has come from the beginner song course app which I thoroughly recommend. I love your videos, the way you explain things and your advice. On one of your videos I saw recently your recommended beginners using a Jim Dunlop 0.38mm pick, I had been using a 0.46mm and I cannot believe how much easier it is using the thinner pick. Many thanks Justin.
Justin: Fingerstyle is considerably harder...
Flamenco guitarists: Hold my rasgueado.
Fr I can't tell you how many RSI injuries I've gotten trying to learn flamenco strumming techniques
Oh myyy
I started playing about 5 weeks ago and you’re more than 100% correct about sticking with what motivated you to start. For me it was finger style uplifting songs like I’m yours, here comes the sun, love yourself, etc… I can guarantee if I started with simple country songs that only have 4 cords I would’ve stopped playing. I got into guitar completely on my own and I knew what style I wanted to learn and for that reason I’ve learned an insane amount for only playing for 5 weeks. I can play here comes the sun and an easy fingerstyle arrangement of love yourself, and a couple more bits and pieces of songs I like but I still can’t play I’m yours and a ton of other amazing songs that fit my style so that is a goal of mine that will keep me inspired and learning. Sorry for such a long comment lol I just think you hit the nail directly on the head with this video and it will help people figure out what they truly want to play without being influenced by people with a different taste in music.
I recently broke my right wrist (outside), and while I couldn't strum the guitar because of the brace and motion, I could still fingerpick! Who knew?
It was just meant to be. :))
When I first picked up a guitar in the early 70's I basically just learned the intros to a few tunes. The first sign of any real progress came when I was able to "grab" chords without any struggle. Things changed for me a few years later when I first heard Dust In The Wind by Kansas. I knew then and there that I wanted to be able to play that song and that I would never consider myself to be a real guitarist until I could play in a rich, full solo fingerpicking style. Learning the picking pattern of that tune was the beginning and I've never looked back. I now play finger style pretty much exclusively and to this day learning a new tune is a challenging and rewarding experience. Too many people give up too soon and their guitars end up in a closet. Striving to tackle new tunes and leaving your "comfort zone" on occasion can lead to a lifelong guitar love affair. If you are new to guitar "JustinGuitar" is a great place to start.
I learnt to play the song if by bread and when I wanted to start singing the lyrics at the same time, I felt that one part of my brain was fighting with the other and I couldn’t do it at the same time no matter what. Fortunately I was so eager to learn it that in two weeks of practice I finally could. Now I can do it without thinking.
Congratulations what's is the trick to over come frustracion I have been trying to do learn play and sing same time but not easy
I felt the same way about Katyusha, but what made it worse is I don't speak Russian 😂😭 practice practice practice
Thanks Justin! Just starting to learn fingersryle and love your web lessons. I'm actually starting the intermediate over again as a refresher. Late to the game in years so helps to refresh.
Hi Justin. Your courses have done my path to learn music wonders and have inspired my two young children to learn music. I am busy doing your course on the app and I have bought most of your songbooks. Take care, stay safe.
Thanks for this affirmation...
Been feeling guilty for not practicing my strumming enough. Finger style is what strikes the chords for me🎶🎵
The first minute and a quarter of this video is spot on and crucially important; and the underlying principle applies to a whole lot more than guitar. I wanted to thank you for saying it, and for expressing it so clearly. (I paused it in order to write this; now I get to watch the rest.)
Very good advice! I love finger style and have been strumming for years. Practicing finger style now, I find it a challenge to establish the muscle memory required to be successful with it!
Thanks Justin. Really enjoying this series.
I can amplify what you've said. I became inspired after working through the finger-picking in the BC, to focus on the folk finger-style module next, rather than working methodically through the Intermediate (note to self ... 1/16 strumming shall be done in due course).
The other thought I had, and don't think I missed you saying so explicitly, was that when starting off just making chord shapes and changing smoothly in time can take quite some effort, at least was the case for me. And I think 4 down strums on the beat at an appropriate tempo requires much less concentration than a basic finger-picking pattern. I guess once the basic chord shapes are becoming fluent then one could shift focus to finger-picking if so inspired, notwithstanding all the other points well made in the video.
Look forward to the next in this series.
Justin as a fellow music teacher - you’re a great teacher - totally agree with your advice
Than you Justin.
Your lessons are extremely knowledgeable and helpful.
Hey Justin!
Thank you for all of the guitar lessons :D
Happy to help!
Hey i'm on lesson 7 on your course I just want to say thanks for such great work it's been a blessing thus far. You're the greatest!
You're very welcome!
Just started learning guitar & was not able to decide what to learn first... your explanation gave me clear way to move ahead.... Thanks for your wonderful explanation... :-)
Good explanations and great lesson. Thanks Justin
Wow!! This video was right on time..This was a burning question and I could get a straight answer because everyone said just do the basic. Fingerstyle is what got me wanting to play, because of the sound. My problem is the chord patterns are soooo frustrating...but I am still trying...3 weeks in.
Thank you🤗 Just joined your online course and downloaded the app. Another new found love to enjoying music 🎶
Ahhh Justin, Youve done it again. You take on subjects that others do but you just seem to do it better. Dont know why or how, you just do. Thanks.
Something I was looking forward thanks a million dear🌹🌹
I found once I’d learned strumming and how the base notes worked fingerpicking came quite natural great lesson
Great topic Justin. Well done and very on point.
I've returned to playing guitar for a couple of years now, play all open and barre chords and have reached what I think is intermediate stage (pretty good, not great. Lol) and now I am ready to move onto finger style.
Because Justin helped me with a successful restart then I am returning to his lessons here to guide me.
IMO there is no better teacher and better prepared video course available than Justin's.
Thanks Justin, good run down. Filled on some gaps.
The first full song I ever learned was Katyusha and before that I avoided chords like the plague but I soon found out even with fingerstyle it's much easier just to learn to make the chord shapes than to go for the individual notes which eventually led to me finally learning a few strumming patterns
Excellent discussion and demo re fingerpicking vs. strumming. I've been a strumming guitar player for over 50 years. Part of it was laziness. My real love was singing…until recently. Now I have begun a love affair with the instrument. I just purchased my first acoustic guitar, a Martin D-18. I still love to sing, but I want my wonderful guitar to sing as well, rather than just be a backup to my singing. Thanks for what you do. You've helped me immensely in this one video.
thank you so much, this video help me decide with one to learn first.
You are welcome!
First song I ever learnt was Streets of London by Ralf McTell because my friends told me I should. I did a 6 week beginners course (way back in 1968) because I REALLY WANTED TO LEARN FINGERPICKING! Never looked back. Now I can play Steve Howe's Clap which is hybrid picking on my 12 string guitar. It rocks!
Sir, your lessons are a blessing :)
This should be the FIRST lesson taught. Through all the years I've played this would have been the best advice I would have received.
Wow! :) Thanks! ;)
Fingerstyle playing came much easier to me than strumming when I started to learn guitar years ago. Could be as you say though that that style of guitar is more pleasing to my ear and what I wanted to be able to do
Turned 50 just before Christmas and for my 'midlife crisis' present I had an electric guitar! The guitar came with 3 months of lessons but I found yours and it was a revelation. Only on lesson 3 but I'm absolutely loving it, driving my better half a bit mad I think :). You style of teaching is great and the song app, timetrainer app and notetrainer app are all fantastic too. Just started the theory course and I definitely see myself subscribing to that too. Thanks Justin - you've made an old (!!) man very happy.
I must be expecting to live a little longer :) Having my mid-life crisis at 63, started the course in December with a guitar we bought for my youngster years ago. Best of luck mate us old timers need to work at it a little harder.
Hold on, you're supposed to worry about pitch when you're singing? uh oh.
lol
Hahahhaha lol
🤣🤣🤣
You can just sing and see how people reacting. As long their don't have bleeding ears, your singing is not bad.

So true about losing motivation 😅, thank you for the video!
I started with fingerstyle and recently tried to get into strumming and i'm terrible at it. I cannot use a pick at all. And It's so loud i cannot hear my own singing voice over it.
Same 100% it's weird
It's not weird in any way, It's simply because you're not trained in it. When you start using a pick, you do not know how to angle it correctly, and how to relax you wrist, causing the sound to be *way* too rough. Every players have gone through that at some point.
This was a really fun video! :)
I would like a slow bit to understand the finger picking. As I can only do thumb and index finger. You are doing an amazing job 👍
Great answer! Thanks! :)
I really appreciate your view on things Justin. I find myself switching between strumming and fingerstyle all the time because I love both. But I should really finish your beginner course some day. 😅
Where are you now on your guitar journey
Strangely, I started teaching myself guitar when I was 17 (I'm now 74) and learned from a book of American Folk songs. The book had finger picking patterns at the front and I thought I should learn these along with some of the songs. (I am English so I'd never heard of half of them!) and my first song was 'Go Tell Aunt Rhody'... haha! I stayed with finger-picking all through, because I didn't know how to strum properly!! I learned to strum, somewhat, when I was 61 but only use it for a few songs because picking fits in with the songs I do in the way I do them... (Englishman in New York, Red Red Wine, Walking in Memphis, Can't Find My Way Home, etc). Nowadays I play an electric guitar, too, because my old fingers find it easier. I love your lessons, but I always seem to tweak them a little for my own style. Thank you.
I love finger picking! Still a beginner tho lol Love your tutorials. I wish it was as easy as learning how to drive a stick.
I was a strummer for years till I took up finger picking. However one area that finger picking really helped with was getting more precision with chord fingering. If strumming, poor finger placement or buzzing, or inadvertent muting isn't very noticeable. However with fingerpicking you need to be spot on. I started finger picking on a uke, which made it much easier. Only once I had mastered it on a uke did I transfer that style to guitar. NB I've never had lessons, I'm sure lessons would make the whole process easier.
I've been trying to teach myself to play guitar and I naturally go to fingerpicking because it just *feels* right, and I have a harder time using a pick.
Personally I like how I can control how loudly I'm playing while fingerpicking and it sounds better on my guitar. I've got one of those children's fist act discovery guitars that I found at a thrift shop for $12, because I figured if I can't lean to play a cheap guitar decently then I've got no buisness buying an expensive one. Plus it's small enough I can comfortably play it in the car (not while driving). It actually sounds really good when I do practice patterns, not perfect but I play blues and folk so it shouldn't be.
Good to know I picked the harder of the two to start with. This probably explains why it's harder to find fingerpicking tutorials and covers.
I was a finger style guitarist before strumming. The finger style helped me learn the rhythm for strumming. It was easier for me. I was learning S&G, James Taylor, Judy Collins, Bob Dylan and Jim Croce from the start by wearing out records and record player needles to actually figure out what those songs were. Getting the “thumb” down helped me get the strumming rhythm down.
That was awesome. Thanks!
Glad you liked it!
Like the attitude learn what you love not what people say you should
Great video Justin. One thing about fingerstyle, its made me a much more advanced guitarist
I guess it so about individuals, I have played classic guitar in my teen age and had after almost 20 years of not playing at all, now I am practicing again with metal string acoustic guitar and fingers style was naturally easier because I have done it before but I really struggle with a pick now 😄 just learned nothing else matters in finger style 👍 and have used your tips for jingle bells to play with my kids, thanks for your lessons
Pls make a beginner finger picking😊 Eagerly looking towards the courase
Like you asked I actually got attracted to fingerstyle guitar which I didn't know is different from strumming style, when I made my decision to start learning guitar. Most tutorials are of strumming style on the internet. One have to specifically type fingerstyle tutorial to find the results.
By the way if someone is interested in fingerstyle when he first picks up his guitar, what type of guitar should he buy ? Classical or accoustic
I spent like a year learning finger style before i even tried strumming i just assumed it would be easy, but found it really difficult, and some strumming patterns i still strugle with but i can play a few bach, fahey, and other difficult finger style stuff like second nature. So much of what I think is hard on guitar other people think is easy and vice versa. I spent hours just getting down a few strumming patterns clean enough to sing over.
For me I found fingerstyle way harder but there was a plateau sooner with strumming, so I learned fingerstyle as good as I possibly could for awhile then afterwards strumming was as easy as pi. I always find doing the harder thing first is way easier in the long run. And more rewarding.
I imagine that even if you are generally into fingerpicking, learning a few easy strumming songs is still not a bad idea. Chord changes are shared anyway, right? Plus, you'd have something to show your friends when they ask "to play something". That's an important motivator, at least for me.
I think it’s a good question to ask oneself is why did u want to pick up guitar mine was finger picking I just love seeing hearing the cleverness, have I tried it no as I listen to courses,I’ve been doing guitar 9mth now love everybit my acoustic it’s great.I was thinking Xmas would I like todo finger picking on the ukulele as it’s diffrent and it’s more cuddly or just go with guitar and that’s what I’m looking rnd on RUclips to chose one and another ps thanks as I’ve learnt a lot from u it’s well appreciated like many others 👍👍👍👍
Hey Justin! I finished beginner course 1 a few months ago and then decided to start fingerstyle. I don't have a lot of knowledge about music theory yet, but I have learned the basics of Travis picking and slapping the bass strings for the snare drum effect. I will be starting beginner course 2 soon. Should I continue with fingerstyle or should I take a break and start strumming again? I am actually quite bad at strumming... Thanks a lot!
With finger-picking you can become a one-man-band by playing bass rhythm and lead all at the same time - especially simple Travis picking.
I learnt in the 70's by playing back records. Smashed many a stylus and record - not to mention the record player - but I did learn. Great fun
Im new here but l like finger style best. But l get around to it no idea. But someday with all these great videos you make l will get there.
My inspiration to restart learning was Johnny cash country rhythm guitar. Used to play acoustic as a child but found no real inspiration frm that. Interestingly, the song folsom prison is easier played with a country pattern strum, but it sounds super fantastic with an alternate bassline, where u picked n strum together. Also, strumming chords can sound a bit muddled to listeners if you play a bit sloppy, like i do most of the time in front of small audience, so finger strumming sounds nicer and requires the player to focus more on cleaner notes.
My first finger strum song with justin is chocolate jesus by tom waits and the alternate bassline strumming is much nicer than pick for this song, esp when i try to sing on top as well. What a great song, and great beginner intro into finger strumming style since the rhythm is quite slow.
You're first sentence is a game changer for me.
Hey justin! Thanks for this awesome topic .. i was really thinking about this few days ago.. anyway, i have a question; in case i want to learn them both as each has their own joy actually and I really want to get them both. In this case which in ur opinion should I start with?? 🤷🏻♂️
Thanks again
Justin please do a lesson for Tash Sultanas Jungle, the solo is really hard to pick up
Like the folk fingerpicking you are doing teach us
Justin, would you consider doing a video on guitar modifications.
I own two guitars one very entry-level the other one, a Canadian brand called Norman, is mid to upper level. I had the action lowered on my entry-level guitar making it much easier to play. As a result, I play it much more than my Norman, even though the Norman guitar has a much nicer sound to it. I'm torn on whether or not I should have the action lowered on the Norman as well, or just force myself to practice on it until it becomes as comfortable as the other one.
As a banjo player soon to be guitar player I would love fingerstyle tutorials! Just ordered a Fender acoustic guitar and can't wait to get started!!! Thanks for all your videos, I'm finding them very helpful :)
Hey Penny! That's exciting - good luck with ur new guitar!
I learned strumming first and later fingerstyle, both this year. But your advices are extraordinary and best of all.☺
That's great!
I am trying that too, what period do you think is to jump to fingerstyle, from strumming?
Sir i am a student of yours
I went through your beginners course
And I learned to to play in this lockdown 2020.
Sir i wish if you could make a lesson on mockingbird by cutting crew . I will be eagerly waiting to have your lesson

I hope he sees your comment
Great video Justin, one step further what do you think is harder fingerstyle or flatpicking?
I speak an an expert - an intermediate level guitar player of 30 years - fingerpicking is too complicated. For me.
I have a beginner to beginner tip for fingerstyle (particularly 4/4 rhythms), if you're struggling on a guitar, try it out on an ukulele first.
Do you have videos on how to do beginner Chord Melody style?
I want to know what the song was that he was trying to play on 4:22 (when he was challenging himself) it sounded great. 👌
If you were to play a C7 chord then move it to the 5th fret as in the video it becomes D7, thats the chord. Then you'd need to work on the thumb pattern, the style is close to Merle Travis or Tommy Emmanuel.
Fingerstyle is definitely harder than strumming. I started with fingerstyle then shifted to using picks and I just struggled with alternative picking and chord spellings. I'm currently practicing alternate pickings
This is something I have struggled with for a couple years as a beginner. Back and forth I go between the two and it has stagnated my progress. This provided some nice insight. I agree with other comments, I've been looking for a 'structured' series of learning fingerstyle and it is just not out there. I've suggested this before on Justin's site. Maybe enough interest and it could mature to more than what I view as random fingerpicking video's. Not a slam to Justin, love his teaching, just my observation here and other learning sites.
Did you ever find a structured series on learning finger style? I would love something like that. All I’m finding is beginner finger style and then individual advanced fingerpicking song videos. Nothing in between to get me from one to the other.
@@lindsayheywood7195 Nope...though a 2020 Justin Guitar video indicated he was developing a module for it. Not sure when that will be available though nor the scope of the course. I'm not sure of your playing direction; just play songs taking chords and doing fingerstyle or incorporating melody (which is what I would like to do). On the latter, I found a few video's. Since you enjoy fingerstyle, RUclips search on Gabriella Quevedo. My God she is incredible. I wrote to Justin's site to have her create the course.
Very nice sir
Hey Justin what's the little tune you picked at the start of the video?
Justin, I am subscribed to your channel. Wondering, Is there a EASY BEGINNER BOOK you recommend for finger style? Do you Have one that I can purchase? Thanks.
Thanks ❤️
You're welcome 😊
This is a great post! Fingerstyle is my goal, but I think getting basic chords and changes down while strumming has been an indispensable start.
Great! Keep it up. ;)
It comes in great use with fingerstyle. I wish I would have started learning chords and changes before learning fingerstyle it would have made my progress much faster but I thought I could just skate by playing individual notes 😅

I play finger style. And alternate picking. I learned my chords firsts. Then I started playing fingers style. And alternate picking. And
hammering next. So now I add some strumming. And just a few lead notes. With scales. But I play alot a gospel. And country. But you need to know your chords first. Real good before you start finger picking,,that's my advice,,,,
It is a bit more technique oriented, easier on a nylon string though!
Strummer is so much harder for me but maybe it's that I learned finger style first and until now I'm trying to stir it up or strum rather.😉
Justin😭 Please do a vidéo about guitars you recommend using as a beginner
Hey justin. I have been pausing your lessons for awhile. But because ive been finding more and more songs to play. Is that a bad thing? its been about 3 weeks. Im in the middle of the blues lessons in grade 2.
First! But I would say strumming first based on my experience.
Which type of guitar is best for fingerstype can you tell me grand auditorium or dreadnought.
Yes, strumming is a lot simpler it’s not as complicated you’re right about the stick shift car. It’s just a beautiful way of playing a guitar. I don’t have to sing. I can’t sing anyway but I found out later on as the years went by high was and still I am a natural finger style guitarist. That’s what I always wanted to be anyway, Chad Atkins is his my idol Johnny fortune was my mentor and my best friend for 30 years. I love your guitars they’re beautiful I have a 427 hollow body Graach electric the perfect guitar for finger style Chad Adkins use those things for years anyway I won’t be in your ear anymore, but thanks for your videos I watch them you’re really an excellent guitarist👍🏼👎🎸😆
Learning fingerstyle was easier for me, a lefty playing standard right hand guitar. The wrist and arm movements of strumming take more practice to feel comfortable. Fingerstyle allows for a wider range of simple patterns to learn
I struggled with strumming for ages and nearly gave up guitar. A friend suggested to try fingerstyle before giving up because as a pc gamer my fingers should be fairly fluid and have decent independence, he was right, super simple from day 1.
Bro strumming is more easy! Whatever track you are playing just keep the strumming pattern in mind and say the strumming pattern while playing it!
@@azaanmalik4769 strumming is considered the easier route generally, but everyone is different and even though I can strum now I still find I make less mistakes with fingerstyle. Plus I love music played fingerstyle over strumming and it's helped me stay motivated.

I don't understand what your point is, I agree strumming is the standard because it's considered the easiest way but for me personally it wasn't and so I learned fingerstyle from the beginning, what's wrong with that?
@@Leoniro86 i didn’t said its wrong I think you didn’t read my comment properly
Hi Justin, would you consider making fingerstyle videos for Brazillian artists (Milton nasciemento - Clube de esquina no 2) or maybe some strumming (Jorge Ben oba la vem ela)
perhaps the viewership may not be the best, but I think it would add a Brazilian twist to your vids!
Hey you! :) There are actually some plans on doing it! Stay tuned. :)
Sound really cool! First song? 🙏
You didn't mention finger picking chords. Is there a long term problem with it? I find selecting four or five strings a breeze and strumming a little harder. I am continuing with strumming however, as I would like to be versatile.
