- On Thursday, August 27, 2020, Pau Capell tried to beat his own record (20H19) on the course of the UTMB® (170k, 10,000m+/-). The goal was to run around the Mont-Blanc in less than 20 hours.

Je me disait aussi pour son départ !! La vache 🧐 mais une question me taraude comment ils font pour l’équipement obligatoire sachant qu’on voit très bien son sac hyper « fin » et donc hyper léger alors qu’on est censé tout avoir durant la course ???

Where is all the high alpine stuff? Most of the footage is in the villages. The performance of Pau is stellar, but the footage doesn't do justice to the toughness of the course
Well I wasn't able to be everywhere 🙂 But I agree with you, I wish I had more high alpine footages. This is the main problem with filming on such a long race, you have to choose between being almost everywhere (expect during the night), or being at some top of mountain but lose the checkpoints where other people are waiting for the athlete. The solution is to be with 10 persons divided on all the course!
Give the guy some room. It is even more difficult to focus when you have people darting in front of you and on the sides. All of that takes energy from the runner.
Well it didn't annoyed Pau, otherwise he would have told me. He told me that he loved the video, so I really don't think this was a problem for him.

Anyone have splits? Or at least approximately what he was running for those first few hundred meters? Dude looked like he was taking off for a 5k race... Why?!

it's like in actual race, sprint ahead to lead the pack, but from the french article it seems like he regret the idea
UTMB finisher here. You can only run the flat sections and you recover from that when you start climbing. Everybody does that in the beginning when legs are fresh and the energy is high
Erreur de débutant. Rare à ce niveau et dans ce type d'effort. Le premier 10km en 37 ' ...
Rare à ce niveau ? À votre avis, pourquoi autant d'élites abandonnent tôt dans les courses d'ultra et plus particulièrement à L'UTMB où le niveau est très relevé ? Certes il faut gérer sa course, mais Pau se devait de prendre des risques pour passer sous les 20 heures. Ça n'a pas fonctionné et il fera mieux au prochain essai !

Great video and kudos ti Pau for a fantastic effort! Im curious is the fact that pacers are carrying the poles for Pau at certain parts is “moraly correct” from the ultra running community point of view despite not being an actual race.
Had the same thought, plus backpack looked emptier than it should with all of the mandatory gear. So this was more about one man's race with himself than trying to set official records.
In a real race you are carrying the mandatory kit with you and if you leave with poles you have to finish with them. They were helping him to break 20 hrs. Not necessarily "correct" but then again, this wasn't UTMB

Let me hear thoughts/suggestions: how long my knee's vacation can be, after 883.5 miles in 18 months (before that, never ran) without serious conditioning loss? My knees are as worn as an old tractor's axles.
With all those people watching the event must have been well publicised. Even so to have to run with all those cameras must have been really irritating. Looked more like a boxer entering the ring at some points.

C'est un projet intéressant mais cest dommage de tant le médiatiser a l'avance par une marque. Ca denature le souhait de l'athlète qui lui est personnelle. Il le dit dans l'interview en plus qu'il a eu une énorme pression. Et voir un mec courir avec une cohorte de suiveurs qui filme sans cesse comme une bête de cirque ca donne un effet étrange
Pau est un athlète de haut niveau, il a pleinement conscience de ce qu'implique un "événement" comme celui-ci 🙂 C'est en grande partie grâce à ses sponsors qu'il a pu mettre en place ce défi, sans eux il aurait pu le faire mais bien moins facilement (financièrement, logistiquement...). Je comprends ton raisonnement qui est tout à fait recevable, mais le sport à haut niveau implique parfois ce genre de choses...!

Son rythme est excellent jusqu'à la moitié de la course, c'est effectivement moins le cas ensuite, même si la performance globale reste exceptionnelle. trop de monde, trop de pacers, trop trop trop....bien sûr ce sont d'incroyables athletes, mais ce genre de compétition ne me fait plus du tout rêver...des courses "d'hommes sandwichs" qui courent en montagne dans de somptueux paysages...pardon, j'ai pété l'ambiance ;))))
