    I read his book way back in grad school and it had good ideas/resonated with me.
    Now, all of a sudden seeing his 1hour+ podcasts on micro topics seems more of a content creation business than anything.. obv it shows that there’s no shortage of people who are into learning /optimization porn.
    Taking copious notes and watching productivity content as a way of ‘learning’ has ultimately become their way of procrastination without feeling bad about it.
    There’s nothing new under the sun, read a few good books and get to work.
    You don’t need “secret sauce” and fancy sounding ideas every week to succeed, if you have a sense of purpose and urgency.

    Hello Cal,
    I've been a dedicated listener for a long time and absorbed all the wisdom from your books. I'm also serving as a faculty member in the engineering department at a Tier 1 university in the U.S. Your productivity advice has been invaluable over the years, and I appreciate your insights.
    I'm reaching out for the first time, prompted by the books you recommended on Israel. While I understand this is your platform and the book choices reflect your personal preferences, I wanted to share my perspective in the hope that it contributes to the discussion. As an open-minded academic, a few points struck me about how this complex issue was framed:
    1) All three books you suggested were from Israeli authors, without representation from any Palestinian author. It's essential to consider diverse perspectives to comprehensively understand the situation. The book you featured seemed to align with an extremely right-wing perspective. Based on my perception of you as an open-minded individual, I believe this might have been unintentional.
    2) The way the issue was explained seemed to focus solely on Israel, neglecting to mention Palestine. The conflict involves two entities: Israel and Palestine. Acknowledging both sides and the historical context, including the pre-1948 existence of Palestine, is crucial for a nuanced understanding.
    3) The conflicts between Israel and Palestine have a long history, not starting on October 7, as media narratives may suggest. It's important to approach the topic with a broader historical context to avoid perpetuating simplified narratives.
    4) If you're interested in delving deeper into the Palestinian perspective, here are three recommendations that provide a balanced starting point:
    a) Said, Edward W. The Question of Palestine. Vintage, 1992.
    b) Khalidi, Rashid. The Hundred Years’ War on Palestine: A History of Settler Colonialism and Resistance, 1917-2017. Metropolitan Books, 2020.
    c) Pappe, Ilan. The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine. Simon and Schuster, 2007.
    I hope these suggestions contribute to more comprehensively exploring the Israel-Palestine conflict.

      As someone who’s never taken a keen interest in this conflict, I’d like to genuinely know if there’s a common resolution to be reached. And if so, would one party end up compromising more than the other?
      Cliff notes version if possible.

    • @mohammadm4984
      @mohammadm4984 10 месяцев назад

      @@kpicsoffice4246 That's a question that has perplexed many, given the complexity of the Israel-Palestine situation. Opinions on a common resolution vary, but a frequently discussed option is a two-state solution, where both Israel and Palestine coexist as independent states. However, the intricacies, such as defining borders, determining Jerusalem's status, and addressing the right of return for refugees, remain highly contentious.
      Finding a compromise is challenging, requiring a delicate balance that addresses the historical and current grievances of both parties. It's crucial to acknowledge that resolution demands concessions from both sides for a sustainable and just outcome. Importantly, resorting to violence against civilians only exacerbates the situation, making the quest for a solution even more challenging.

    How meta is this!! I read Jane McGonigal’s book “Imaginable” around the same time I discovered Cal Newport. I even wrote a substack including content from both Cal Newport and Jane McGonigal about VISUALIZATION… I referenced EFT like Cal just did… and Cal’s portion was geared towards slowing down and making actionable steps to organize. One of the best stories I’ve ever heard about visualization was from Joseph Campbell when he spoke of the Native Americans who would draw an image of the stag they were stalking and hunting, then they would place the picture on a tree at the top of a hill or mountain, and shoot an arrow through it as soon as the sun came up and shined on the image on the tree. Talk about visualization practices !!!!! Drawing, Simulating, Being Patient, Timing, and the upmost respect for making it as painless as possible.

    In the video transcript, Cal Newport discusses the concept of motivation in the context of learning, differentiating between two motivational systems: dopamine-driven motivation and episodic future thinking (EFT). The dopamine system is associated with immediate, pleasurable responses to stimuli, often exploited by social media apps. Newport argues that trying to make learning as addictive as social media through dopamine-based strategies is challenging, as learning inherently involves strain and effort. On the other hand, EFT involves projecting oneself into the future, imagining positive outcomes based on past experiences and deeply held values. Newport emphasizes that mastering the EFT system is crucial for sustained motivation in learning, as it allows individuals to connect present actions with meaningful future goals, fostering a more profound and enduring motivation compared to the instant gratification of dopamine-driven rewards.
    In the discussed video segment, Cal Newport talks about the concept of EFT (Endowment Field Therapy) versus dopamine-driven motivation. He emphasizes the importance of having a clear value or vision for oneself, such as engaging with ideas at a deeper level or striving for personal growth and impact on the world. Newport suggests that relying on EFT, where you expose yourself to examples that resonate with your values, can be more effective than the dopamine-driven motivation often associated with activities like social media engagement. Instead of just pursuing immediate rewards, Newport encourages a focus on activities that align with your long-term vision, creating a more meaningful and impactful life. He suggests applying this approach not only to learning but also to various aspects of life to transition from a shallow to a deeper existence.

    I believe that Van Ahn's approach will work, with a few weeks. If you make learning "semi-competitive" i.e. offer people ratings that are visible to others, they will try to out do one another. That becomes addictive. Giving people promotions in rank, etc. Doing these sorts of things fueled World of Warcraft to being a billion dollar business.

    Interesting bit about learning guitar - Fender has an app that teaches you and also uses a streak model like Duolingo. I haven't cared too much about the streak, but when I put in the time and do a hard lesson, no matter how badly I play or sound, I do get better from having done it, and I'm faster. Practice is meant to sound and feel like shit for awhile, it's not meant to feel like flow until you're extremely proficient. And then it's just a warm-up at that point.

By imagining every detail of the future you wish to create your body and brain can't distinguish between whether or not it has happened. You essentially practice what it feels like to be who you wish to become. I hadn't considered using what Dr Joe teaches as a way to motivate myself to study my craft more often. Now I have a system I dove deeply into that I am familiar with that I can apply to the concept you explained here. Amazing!

As an academician, it's crucial to approach topics as sensitive as the Israeli-Palestinian conflict with a balanced and objective view. I would encourage you to also explore historic books that provide a well-rounded, scientific, and objective perspective, which can offer a more comprehensive understanding of the complex issues involved. I’ve only listened to the begin of this but I would say that although in many skills deliberate practice is not the same as the flow state, I’d hypothesize that certain fields gain less from deliberate practice than others, especially those where wider/general knowledge (vs very specific perfected skills) are important. I also don’t think they’re mutually exclusive.… seems likely that flow state evolves out of deliberate practice via hedonic reversal..

    • @Michael-vf2mw
      @Michael-vf2mw 8 месяцев назад +1

      Yeah, I was wondering something like that when I was listening. It seems like the deliberate practice vs flow state distinction might be a false dichotomy. They both serve a purpose. If you listen to Rion Doris of the Flow Research Collective, he explains that process of getting into flow has four stages, one of which is struggle - which in my understanding would equate to the struggle during deliberate practice which Cal is talking about. Also, the trick is ultimately not to just do what is pleasurable (which Cal seems to reduce "flow" to), but to find pleasure in doing what is hard so that it becomes enjoyable. Guitar is not my thing, but I'd be astonished if you couldn't get the pro guitarist he talks about to admit that he genuinley enjoys his struggle sessions. I've certainly experienced sheer enjoyment when lost in a grueling chess game against players stronger than myself. On the outside it looks like I'm just torturing myself - which is true initially, but after time it becomes incredibly rewarding.
      Perhaps I'm misunderstanding his point.

If you dont have much respect or care for the job and its draining on you and makes you want to blow your brains out then maybe its time to find something a little more stimulating, or important to you or proud being apart of.

    does Cal ever adress IQ limits on how much you can learn or remember? Because he comes up with all these tips on organizing and studying, "deep work" etc. but he's obviously a very intelligent person intrinsically, so I wonder if this is like when a handsome tall guy gives the short pimply nerd advice on how to talk to women.

    • @ThePiones

      If anything, organizing and studying tips are even more useful to people with worse memories or slower understanding. Different methods might suit different people better of course, but the principles are most times the same

      I feel like every "expert" in some way does that, reason why i have come to the conclusion that to search for the "how" is never a smart choice, it will give you some fleeting motivation but also some very high expectations, that's why as soon as you struggle with something your world collapses, and with each attempt your self confidence lowers more and more.
      Of course I'm not talking for everybody, but if you happened to resonate with anything I've said you need to stop looking for the magic formula. It's cliche but it's also true, hard work is the only path to success. All this looking for the best method, book, supplement (yeah I've done too) is just another way to procrastinate.

      People with middling or low IQ in the normal range can still learn things if they have proper tutelage. Intelligence is basically how fast you can solve cognitive problems. The biggest problem is that as IQ becomes lower, so do other personality traits that facilitate learning, such as impulse control. The low IQ individual may be able to learn mnemonics, memory tricks, and how to use spaced repetition, but he will be easily distracted by instant gratification. This can also happen to people with a high IQ. but it's much more likely for those with a low IQ.

  • @varunkapur5640
    @varunkapur5640 9 месяцев назад

    This is purely your hypothesis Cal. You need to show data before you reach this conclusion. Yes learning is hard, but it shouldn't be so hard that it demotivates and disincentives people from learning altogether.

      This will be a controversial opinion, but the best you can do for any human being is suggest actions in good spirit. But at the end of the day, if Cal decides not to read any book on principle, then that's his right. I don't understand what's so triggering about this.

    Episodic future thinking is like imagining being in heaven and hell. I know that EFT works. Eg In my religion we are required to pray 5 times a day and most of us do that because the consequences of not praying are horrible.
    So there are three reasons to do good deeds
    1. Hating to go to hell (negative reinforcement)
    2. Loving to go to heaven (positive reinforcement)
    3. Out of love for God
    My reason for doing it is mainly fear of hell + maybe a bit of hope for heaven.
    But doing it just for the love of God and not for rewards is the highest form of motivation which very few can attain.

    32:16 As usual, Cal haszero understanding of anyone whose goal lifestyle IS the work, because he's never done any actual creative work. That's not the same thing as being over-identified with your work or expecting your work to fulfill every possible need. It DOES mean that relegating your truly important work to "hobby" or "side hustle" status is fundamentally wasting your time.

    • @visionboardmusicvision4the513

      He's literally an author and a content creator, and effectively at that I might add! Lolol But to your point, I think what he's more saying is that if you don't desire to make a living or to expand your impact or reach, it's a hobby. I feel he's just saying to be honest with yourself in the level of importance you're giving to whatever you're wanting to do so you can allocate time and energy accordingly. And by the way I'm a singer-songwriter and someone who has a regular job and someone who's building a business so I understand where he's coming from from that angle

    • @elizabethhenning778

      @@visionboardmusicvision4the513 You really need to stretch the definition of creative to describe his writing or "content" as creative. Of course he could do it on the side. He's also incredibly lucky because he was able to get an academic job.

      @@elizabethhenning778 I understand where you're coming from, but as a writer myself and I'm a singer-songwriter? To be able to get an idea out in a way that is able to translate to another person's consciousness is creative. But that's just how I see it 💕 At the same time I understand where you're coming from cuz I felt similar when Rick Rubin said something simular. But then I reflected and realized that what Rick Rubin is saying is that no matter where we are in life that we should find something that brings us joy even if it's not ultimately the career we want to have. We still have to enjoy the creative process by itself and I feel like what call is saying at least what I took from it anyways, is that we must prioritize In order to make deep work effective, and part of prioritizing means that you have become crystal clear in your outcomes. So if you're outcome is to make money with your creative pursuit, you must be crystal clear on that so that you can prioritize going deep and understanding how to turn it into a business, who that you can work for or what positions are available for you to do what you love, etc. There is a space for everything somewhere, but you do have to do the deep work to create that life for yourself

If you want some opposing views I recommend llan Pappe's books 10 myths about Israel or The ethnic cleansing of Palestine, or some of Aljazeera's excellent documentaries.
