    Doing research can be an extremely valuable addition to your CV no matter what specialty you decide to pursue. Research experience is often used to measure interest, dedication, and work ethic, and if done correctly, can also be fun and extremely rewarding!

    As someone not experienced with research, how do you sell yourself via email? You mentioned "here is how I can contribute" - what would this entail to a beginner? Also, when you partake in research during the school year, do the attendindgs/PI/residents expect +20 hours for me to carry my end? THANK YOU for this video! (I'm currently an OMS-II)

    Thank you Madalyn for this amazing video! I always love your energy, and this video's topic is actually something I've been pondering about for a while. And there's a question I would like to ask - if you've been never taught how to make use of stats programs like SPSS, R, etc... are you supposed to learn it yourself or is your research mentor going to be understanding and willing to take time to guide you through it? I want to reach out and volunteer for research projects, but I'm not sure exactly *how* I'm going to contribute to the project - as a MS I feel like I am unskilled and I don't see how adding a newbie(aka me) is going to make it better for the people at the research project so it keeps me from reaching out to them. Does it normally feel like "Hey, I want to help, although I don't know much about the methods it takes but if you are willing to take the time to direct and teach me I'll try my best to contribute"? 😥

    • @db6533
      @db6533 2 года назад

      Hi - MS here. My career counselor said that if you do know how to use stat programs, it is a plus but your efforts are better pursued elsewhere if you don't know how. Research heavy institutions typically have a statistician that performs the analysis for you and if they don't the PI should know someone who can. It is typically not the medical student's responsibility to know how to do this. I would say that you can dedicate __ amount of time (weeks if in the summer or hours in the week) to do the research. Here is some examples of previous research I've done, this is why I'm interested in this research, etc. If they've posted the project online you can look up how the research is typically done (look into the methods if it is bench research and familiarize yourself with the topic).
