- Hello guys and gals, it's me Mutahar again! This time we take a look at a new AI art tool from China that seems to be missing any information about a whole group of people all over the world. It's led to some pretty funny generations and I wanna talk about why it happens. Thanks for watching!

Damn finding out muta hasn't watched the boys was probably one of the most heartbreaking things I've ever heard in my life.
Anime is almost always based in Japan (go figure) and considering that most people who live in Japan are also Japanese (they don't think very highly of foreigners over there which is why there aren't many comparitively) most characters will have a light skin tone. There are anime and manga with darker skin tones, but it depends. Most of the time I see it they are foreigners, a representation of somewhere like America (such in sports anime), or if the story takes place somewhere that isn't Japan (or China, cause... you know). It would be weird if they made the Japanese schools look as diverse as Western schools, because it just won't be like that. You'd probably have to go outside Japan for that, story wise.
Regardless of any of that, though, it makes no sense why they wouldn't have made sure that all skin tones at least are acknowledged as proper skin tones, but it is China at the end of the day. Though they seemed to have such a small sample size that it felt pretty rare for the AI to make an image with even a low level of similarity.
I can't believe the AI did our tan-skin, tomboy, gyaru, anime waifu muta, like that.

@@billcosbee2057 the chinese generally don't like dark-skinned people in general, specially dark-skinned asians from "inferior countries" like indians and southeast asians... i'm a filipino with a somewhat brown complexion and i worked in china for like 3 years before the pandemic hit and oh boy, was racism a fun experience, i just don't hear much from employees from our company because i'm part of upper/mid management

My favourite was a pic of a pregnant woman with a kid and a husband that is missing both his legs and arms . The Ai made anime versions of the woman and the kid but turned the husband into a briefcase or luggage smth like that the word escapes my tounge atm

I've seen people post about this, and I was just so surprised to see how the AI changes anyone with dark skin colour into monkeys. For such a big company, it's just so amazing to mess up that much.

You can see exactly what the AI is doing, because of the limited data set, it's turning the high white points from the reflection of the flash, studio lights, etc. and interepreting that as the character's skin colour while turning the darker skin tones into shadows

I tried to use a family portrait image and it literally turned the smaller kids into Lolis and turned half of the males into either anime girls or a knight with the same black hair and sword replacing arms.

@Allosaurus675017 and a very large database for them to work with. The AI here looks like it used works from a small sample of artists hence the very similar art style it generates. This is nothing like the ones the chinese government has.

I've gotten quite a bit of variance with female faces but male faces look nearly identical across the board

@@Plumtopia i think that most of the anime arts used for training their model is predominantly made up of women characters, which is also not surprising given the current anime landscape. The bias the AI has on the color of the skin can also be attributed to the amount of characters with darker skin of colors for their data since the anime landscape itself already has a bias against those.

anything you hand over to a chinese company becomes property of the ccp, at least as far as the ccp is concerned.
I used my pso2 character for the ai art which btw, my character is dark skin. The ai does not detect skin well unless you have bright/specific lighting, and/or have a portrait shot of your photo. Otherwise, the ai literally gives up and just auto defaults to white skin and blue eyes. It also doesnt do dynamic poses well either. It's a fun little app but its extremely flawed. AI art wont replace actual artists until they can do hands properly.
I think one of the goofiest things about this was feeding it genshin impact images, since it would force them into Zelda BotW character images. Specifically because of Tencent's grudge against the game. It got so far that just shoving in an image of Link next to the genshin logo would change the logo to the Zelda logo

People just want free art but they’ll never get art as good as coming from an actual artist.
As with most problems in AI it struggled to adapt so if you give it an input it doesn’t have a lot of data for or it has too much bias on it’ll struggle to give you what you want. The point I’m trying to illustrate is that we have to make a LOT of art for these machines to be good for most people but we’ll likely never have a perfect one that can create whatever I want even if it’s a perfectly creative idea that’s never been done before. There are certain things I can describe, they make look funny and well painted but I’ll likely have trouble making something serious especially if it’s too specific.
Those AI’s need actual art input to work anyways and I’ve fucked around with them. If you have an ounce of creativity the whole thing falls apart but at least they make some really funny works 😂

@@Jorora Unfortunately AI art already surpasses the quality of several artists, especially starters. This "x thing looks bad in the image therefore it'll never replace humans" mentality is a bad cope. AI is learning and learning fast. Last year it could barely put a face together, now it can generate photorealistic ones in several different styles. Hands are only a matter of time. It's really unpredictable what's gonna happen. But prepare your heart for anything. This coming from another artist.

I’m glad I’m not the only one who noticed this. I had a picture of me from Halloween where I was wearing green body paint and it still made me look white. I know some people probably find it really offensive but I think it’s a little too silly to actually get upset over. It also turned my dog into a tiger for some reason.
TBH there's like five total black people in all of China, and even fewer in anime-style artwork, I'm not sure where they could have gotten more training data to make this work correctly.

Mutahar is my favorite creamy white, blue eyed anime youtuber. Idk why the live action generator AI would show you as an Indian man with a full beard and cap. Hopefully this issue with non diverse datasets in AI training gets resolved in the future to fit all sorts of representation! Cheers

Not to mention that when you do find darker people in anime it's often heavily stereotyped. So using that data could be problematic.
On Nightcafe, which is pretty good in general, if you put in "a beautiful woman" as a prompt you will always get a white woman. You have to add multiple descriptors of skin tones and ethnicities to pull the AI away from "defaulting white". Also if you are looking to make specific body types it has different racial biases (Like "a muscular man" who is Asian will never have more muscularity than a black prompted creation even if it's in a fantasy genre - where I think everything should be on the table.
So you are complaining that an ai that was trained on real images follows certain realistic standards and does not adhere to your own delusions and fantasies by default? What are you? 12?

The entire concept of intellectual property is contrary to equality and progress. AFAIK SCOTUS already ruled that AI art is automatically in the public domain, take it up with them.

I realized that it not only changes the skin color of everything to white tones, (what I think is think from the dataset), but also that in men it only uses the same art style but with women can use at least to different styles.
Fun fact the company that made it tencent has a grudge against mihoyo so they decided to be petty and turn any genshin image you upload there into link from LoZ. Now if you actually uploaded an image of link it won't recognize him unless you put the genshin logo on it.

My friend did this one ancestor AI and all the pics still looked like her, so I ran mine through. I’m white, but it can’t do Italians. It turned my hair blond, my eyes blue, and lightened my skin. I did look pretty cool as a Viking though

I would just like to say that gundam one of the single most popular, perhaps progenitors of anime, does in fact have poc characters in fact the newest ones are probably more diverse than real life.
I tried that AI too. I've seen examples where it actually worked. It definitely didn't for me. And I'm white so that's not even a problem. It completely changes my facial shape. It is okay at imitating my clothing style but made it much more monochrome.

Suprisingly one try for me worked perfectly. If the image is a little bit smaller it could be the original. But that was one try in 20 or so.
The AI that I found turned me into a burrito holding a bottle of Yoohoo. My original photo was of me sitting on a beanbag chair holding a hamster. Come on Mr. Magoo! Not even close.

Average Austrian painter
Only about 2 of the photos shown had blonde hair and blue eyes. In at least one of those cases the original photo was of a blonde woman. The other photo didn’t provide the original image (I think?).
Blonde hair and blue eyes being generated doesn’t seem to be the issue here.
