I’m using the zoom h5, and your video is very helpful... In terms of mix minus, I found a workaround, I’m using a Samson q2u that has XLR and USB, so I plug the XLR to the zoom, and the USB to the computer, so I send at the same time the mic signal to both devices, then from the audio outlet of the computer, I send the Skype audio signal to the other channel of the zoom h5, so I can record both signals in different channels. I had the problem that you addressed (horrible noise) but I fixed it with a couple of filters (ground noise isolator), and done! And as I post my interviews to RUclips and podcast, I throw the sound from the line out of the recorder to the mic in of the camera, and as I can configure the zoom recorder to make a marker sound at the beginning, so is easy to sync in post, and also it doubles as a backup audio recording.
Yeah even with a true studio condensor as well. I use mine with the AT-8022 stereo mic. I do want to get a pair of AT-4021 mics which are the parent of the 8022.
I've been using the H2n for about 15 years with an audio technica shotgun mic and it's been my workhorse for my radio show field interviews and podcast....thought I hate having to put an xlr --> 1/8 adapter. I just ordered the H6 Black and I cannot wait to dip into that. I'm also going to grab a couple of sm58s for the high stress field interviews, but, I still like the shotgun for the odd baton vibe, though it's too damn large for a field gear. Thanks for this video, I'm now going through your other ones....great job.
Tony, got my H6 Black a few weeks ago for my new podcast and have run a few operational and sounds checks. The H6 is a champ. The pre-amps are quiet, screen is easy to read, menu easy to navigate. You will love the H6. Above all it sounds great and reproduces perfectly. I'm tellin' ya, you'll love it.
Used your link to add the Sure SM58....Really want to invest in the Rhode mic but for now... I am excited to add this mic to my Samsun Q2U. Thanks so much. And my Zoom h6 is on it's way!!!
First of all, thank you Theresa! I think the SM58 will quickly rise to be your fave mic! Thanks for watching! Would love a subscribe to the podcast! solohour.com/itunes (or wherever else you listen to podcasts)
Great video, I liked and subbed! Question: Where is the link for your video on how to do mix-minus on the Zoom H6 that you referred to? I just got the Zoom H6 and want to try that. Thanks!
Thank you! I just picked up my H6 with the intention of taking my podcast mobil for some interviews with other local therapists. I have one SM7B, and the SM58. I have a cloudlifter but will pick up a fethead for the SM7B for easier mobility. Anything I should know about possible issues? Should I rely on the batteries or use a powerbank with the H6? Any internal settings I should change?

The Solopreneur Hour Podcast with Michael O'Neal The F6 is the next thing for me. Just got the H6 so this year will add the F6! 👍 Looking forward to your review and tips on the F6!
The XY mic can be useful to get crowd noise/ambiance. You can fade in as you go to commercial break, run the credits, or transition from awkward silences. Also it can come in clutch if for some reason a mic is broken or a corrupted file or some other act of god that can only be found in Post. I just turn off the L-R in the monitors and check the levels from time to time. Gets recorded just fine and you don't have to use it, but it's saved my butt in the past so I thought I'd add my two cents. Thanks for the great vid!
questions... do you use any of the fx from zoom? like compressor limiter noise reduction? I want to come out with the audio already ready to go... just throw music .. ducking etc... is it really 4 individual tracks (are the files individual?)
I have been doing a lot of research about podcast setups and I pretty much agree with you about the mics. I have one doubt, before spending 350+ on the H6, what are your thoughts about getting something like the Zoom livetrak 8 or the Rode Rodecaster pro first to set up my home podcast studio? And later on, when I have the money, getting the H6 for occasional on the road interviews - the Livetrak can work with batteries so perhaps it could serve as portable recorder if I needed to interview someone away from base.
Very cool. Getting ready to do a live stream discussion of a debate I am moderating and looking for a portable solution. As long as the Zoom H6 can interface with my iPhone during the live stream, I think I'm good to go. Regardless, I'm still buying the Zoom H6 and the mics because it meets my other podcasting requirements. Thank you, Michael. Do you have any thoughts on live streaming with the Zoom H6?
I Prefer the RodeCaster Pro. But i make a, lets call it, Single Person Podcast, and i like the Pads of the Rodecaster. A mixer, a player and a Recorder anything in one piece of Hardware. The only Thing which could be better is that it has a Slot for MicroSD. Normal SD would be better, but i dont have a Real technical reason why i would prefer the bigger SD-Cards. Its simply that i like them More. But you‘re right, there is no better way than Hardware-Recording.
This is really cool. I'm a little surprised you don't have a microphone preamp in the go-bag (like a cloudlifter or something) to get cleaner sound. Is it just too much to carry, or something else?
100 fucking %. on episode 50 with that exact setup, one thing to add re USB which you wanted to but guess you got distracted. power over USB is also a thing!
Yes, I DO power my Zoom H6 via USB. But do NOT (if you're reading this) plug the USB into your laptop for power. Plug it into an outlet with a USB power adapter. If you plug into the laptop it will introduce the most frustrating noise ever!
Yes agree with you have been using it. You can also use it with your mobile to record phone interview and get voice on different channels. However I have a strange problem the surface is become sticky.specially back panel.any idea how to get rid of it
Awesome video. I just purchased one about a month ago but have never used it. I bought to record a narration I'll be doing to create a digital product for sale. What would you recommend as a great lapel mic for narration and podcasting?
When you say condenser mics are bad you are wrong because they might be bad for something that your doing but it wont be bad for what say Im doing. I have the Neumann TLM 103 and im loving it and what kind of microphone is it? its a condenser.
This was fantastic! I played around with a zoom h6 last fall when inguest hosted a podcast and I've been wanting my own for a while. I bought one last night and cant wait to use it when it arrives. Q: Is it easy to record soundboard fx and other audio into the live recording with zoom or will I need to do that in post with multitrack?
Great video! I'm just wondering how your setup looks like when you do those interviews you do in events or public places. Like do you just hold the H6 on your other hand?
Great video...also mix minus ...thank you...but I need a diagram for podcaster dummies...for all of us visual learners! That is, a diagram that illustrates all cable connections (labeled) to connect Zoom h6, mixer and computer. I cannot find such a diagram for podcasting...anywhere! Suggestions? Thank you again.
The problem you're experiencing with the H6 XY mic is because 1) The unit is on the table while you're tapping shit on the table, 2) The mic is aiming the other way, and 3) You're holding the 58 right up to your mouth, not resting it on a table you're tapping. I've been using 58s for live performances for 20 years, but those are nowhere near being better than the Zoom's XY mic for interviews. Sorry.

AT2020 is a condenser mic...so if you have a super quiet room it's ok. Most people don't. I have two of them in my studio as overheads for my drums...nice mic, but impractical for most people.
Thanks Michael. I was going to ask you what to use, because your KIT link confused me by listing everything possible. How do you use video at the same time as using an H6?
