    I've found three new materials that might work for squishies! This video also gave me the chance to do a deep dive in the technical aspects of squishy materials. Most soft silicones are sold for mold-making or replicating skin. So if you're browsing for industrial products then you want the ones labelled "Shore 00" or super soft/skin textured. Silicone-based polymers are usually fairly stable and can be mixed with oil, water or dry pigments/glitter without any problems. However I encountered the first messy reaction in this video by mixing silicone with a water based latex sealant. It turned out very odd, although it did cure into an unusual texture.

    8:36 when working with silicone on silicone, you have to use a mold release agent to prevent sticking (like you had). Silicone sticks to virtually nothing, but silicone will stick to silicone VERY easily.

    Air cures the tire sealant. That's how it dries after putting it in a tire. As you ride, the tire spins, slinging the sealant all around the inside of the tire, when there's a leak, some of the sealant leaks out of the hole and will solidify in time as it comes in contact with the air. :)

    Hello, little bit of information from someone who's done a degree having worked with these for art purposes.
    Dental alginate, which you can usually mix in different strengths too, (right up to very liquidy states that cure over 15 mins) is great for small, and inexpensive disposable mold-making as the alginate begins to degrade after a day (it usually goes mushy rather than hard) It can be found pretty cheap and is great for lifecasting (making a mold of a face/part of body)
    It's usually found as a green powder form that you mix with water. Art supply shops rarely sometimes carry it (uk)
    Because it's made of seaweed, it also has a very low chance of someone being allergic to it.
    Also biodegradable.
    In the last experiment the solution did not cure because Silicone will not cure in the presence of latex. Water content in low doses usually forms bubbles in silicone or floats to the top, depending on consistency. Adding water to latex will just make it cure slower because latex sets when exposed to air, whereas silicone reacts chemically by mixing part A and B.
    The saying goes that nothing will stick to silicone but silicone!
    Usually you would wear a ventilator and gloves to mix silicone parts as it's not good for you
    it may not be safe to play with that mushy uncured one.

    • @maqaroon
      @maqaroon  7 месяцев назад +12

      Thank you so much for that detailed information!! Yes, I had a feeling that latex and silicone weren't supposed to be mixed and also handling it without gloves wasn't the best idea. I only touched it for the few seconds shown on video and then disposed it all. I'm curious if you could help with a question about the Elmer's Squishies? I strongly suspect that it's the same thing as the industrial type silicone, but how can companies market 2 part silicone as safe for kids? Obviously the final piece is safe assuming it cured correctly, but in your opinion, what is the potential risk of letting kids play with uncured silicone without telling them what the ingredient actually is?

      @@maqaroonthe companies marketing advanced crafts to little kids reminds me of those little food things that make you use uv resin which can be really complicated and i can see the argument that parents should just watch their kids and do it with them i kinda think it’s packaging is a little deceiving if you don’t look at it closely it looks just like those mini shop fake grocery toys that are just toys not crafts like i saw them at target right across from the baby dolls 💀

    Hi! I’m a Dental assistant and I work with the alginate material everyday! I would try to mix it a little more water so the material can flow into the mold and try to use the coldest water that you can to mix the powder. It sets up slower the colder the water is which will give you more time to pour up. You want the ratio to look like thick pancake mix. It will still set up the same way

    I assume what makes the tire sealant cure is the water evaporating, which would explain why nothing happened with the quantity used here. As for mixing it into the silicone, yeah, I'd say the water was the issue here as well, seeing as the two don't really mix. Though it could be interesting to see what would happen if you left the sealant to set for a very long time until basically all the water is gone.

    • @maqaroon
      @maqaroon  7 месяцев назад +17

      Yes I was wondering how the sealant can work inside a tyre but not dry in the air. I'm guessing the friction and movement helps to spread it into a very thin layer and causes the liquid to evaporate quickly. Just leaving it out in the air doesn't do anything 😬

    • @WingedLaguun
      @WingedLaguun 4 месяца назад

      @@maqaroon hello! I’m not sure if you will see this comment, as this video is (somewhat) pretty old. As someone who has tubeless tires, I thought that I could explain why it didn’t solidify. When you get a flat tire, the hole is usually extremely tiny. The smallest amount of sealant is needed to patch up the hole. Meanwhile, if you get a large hole or gash in the tire, the sealant will not work. This is because sealant was designed to have a large longevity in the tire, while also being able to patch up any small holes. I’ve spilled sealant on the floor in my garage, and small specks dries up within seconds, while the larger puddles stayed wet, even after hours. Sealant was not designed to have a large quantity to be exposed to air.

    Dental paste = alginate. It’s used to create molds for making casts. Technique is required to mix it properly to minimize bubbles, make it set faster or slow down the process, etc. It will dry out eventually. It’s recommended to wear a mask so you don’t inhale the particles.

      If you have polymer clay that’s gone hard, it’s still possible to soften it for use. Either by handling it (using a pasta machine will help save your hands) and/or adding a few drops of isopropyl/rubbing alcohol at a time to soften it. There is clay softener on the market but honestly alcohol is cheaper and works just as well. I’ve had polymer clays from years that I was able to soften.

    What kind of silicone do you use to make the mold and where can I get it?

    For future - Silicone degrades Silicone - so that's probably why it sticks.

    I'll need to use dental paste for a future project, so it's pretty interesting seeing you use it.

      Several viewers commented that you can delay the curing time by using more water. You can also keep the mold in its original size (ie prevent shrinkage) by storing it in a tightly sealed plastic bag with wet wipes or some source of moisture.

    I want to make a giant squishy. What material would you recommend for one about twenty cm in diameter?

    • @maqaroon
      @maqaroon  7 месяцев назад +1

      If you can get your hands on wholesale sized soft silicone (like the one in this video) then that would probably be the easiest. If it can be a foamy/slow rising squishy then you can carefully cut the shape out of memory foam. You can get cheap memory foam pillows from IKEA or discount shops.

    I feel like that dental paste would be good for making molds of things

    • @maqaroon
      @maqaroon  7 месяцев назад +1

      Yes I agree but I find it bizarre that it shrinks so much! Especially since in real life they need to make models of people's teeth, and that has to be 1:1 scale. Apparently dentists have to seal the molds inside plastic (with a source of moisture like a wet wipe) and cast the teeth models asap. If the mold shrinks even slightly then it's useless.
