We were in need of a relaxing vacation, so we headed to the Maldives!.
The 30+ hours of travel time (including layovers) from Los Angeles was well worth it. This is our second time in the Maldives and our first at this resort. It was also our first time taking a seaplane.
LUX* South Ari Atoll is a 5 star property in the Maldives with well kept grounds and beautiful villas It takes 30 mins via seaplane to get here from the main airport of Male
This resort is massive and it catered to families and couples. They had a lot of free activities that changed daily so you won't get bored. Our favorite restaurants were Allegria and Umami, despite the high prices of food -- which is typical for the Maldives.
Snorkels are available to borrow from the dive center. However, make sure you return them the day before your departure date as you'll get charged for them at checkout.
Golf carts drive you around the resort, except the overwater villas. It's a very long walk to some of the villas. You may rent a bicycle for a daily fee if you prefer.

There are a few factors to take into consideration while planning your visit: budget, mode of transportation and time of year.
💰Budget:
There are certainly affordable accommodations in the Maldives that cost $300/night or less and other resorts that could cost up to $10k/night!! You have more choices of resorts and hotels in the Maldives compared to Bora Bora. We usually look on Expedia or directly on the hotel website for any deals. For our 7 night stay in LUX, we booked direct & paid $6,500 with complimentary breakfast. There was an all inclusive option but it was $2,500 more and we won’t eat or drink enough to make that worth it.
🚤Mode of Transportation to the Resort:
All international flights land in Male. From there you can either take a speedboat or seaplane to the resort. And here’s another thing to consider for your budget. Speedboat transfers cost less than seaplanes and some resorts offer it for free. We paid $200/pp round trip for our speedboat transfers in the past and $500/pp roundtrip for the seaplane.
⛅️ Time of Year:
Best time of visit the Maldives is from November to April. Rainy season is from May to October. April is already very humid as it’s close to monsoon season.
Also keep in mind the travel time it takes to get here. It took us almost 2 days to get here from Los Angeles so factor that into your time off.
