As British Black guy I have become super sensitive at the American media's double standards when representing interracial couples. It seems to be treated as mainstream and normal when it is a white male character with a black female character, but when it is a black male character with a white female character it is treated as taboo and racial politics are more involved, despite the fact in the USA white women with Black men is more common than the other way around statistically. What made me sensitive was watching the Louis Gate Jr documentary Black Hollywood in 2008. In this doc Gates ask the big Hollywood producer Arnaud Miclan, who is big producer in Hollywood to this day, why has every attractive Black female actress had a white male love interest, but you never see an A-List American white actress with a black male love interest. He let slip the truth. He said when it is a white man with a black woman it is exotic, but when it is a white woman with a black man it is dangerous. He is basically saying it is personal preference of white male producers and they don't want to promote black men to white women. This guy was never cancelled and still making big movies today like Deep Water, Gone Girl and 12 years a slave.
So when I found out two of my favourite British shows were being remade for American audiences and they were the shows Utopia and Ghosts. On both these shows the main character is black, but on both shows, there are white female love interests for these characters. In Utopia there are two white female characters vying for the black male character and it is vital to plot that this character is black and in Ghosts it is a about a normal married interracial couple who buy a hotel that is full of ghosts of the guests who died there throughout the century. These remakes were really going to test the Hollywood double standard and boy did Hollywood prove they have this anti-black man agenda. For Utopia US version they just whitewashed the show and made the black main character a white man in the American version and race bent the white female love rivals to black women in the US version. SMH. And in Ghosts remade by CBS, they race bent the black husband character to an Indian, probably because Big Bang Theory their biggest hit had an Indian. And I just thought wow, Hollywood is still anti- black male in 2022.
They did the same for one of my all time favourite sitcoms the sci-fi sitcom Red Dwarf. It was the most watched sitcom in the UK in the mid 1980s and the lead character and hero was a dreadlocked Black man in a live action sci-fi sitcom that was lightyears ahead of it's time, that shows like Futurama and Rick & Morty ripped off many decades later. Well NBC in the late 1990s wanted to do an American remake of this hugely popular show about an unlikely black hero on a giant spaceship in deep space, all the crew has been killed and he is only human survivor as he was frozen during the accident for millions of years. And the only things keeping him company is descendant of his cat who has gone through a million years of evolution and is now humanoid and is a cross between Little Richard and James Brown, there is also an overly polite android who is programmed to be honest all the time but not to hurt the feelings of humans and the Hologram representation of his annoying dead ship room mate. The makers of the British show deliberately wanted two of the main characters to be black because the Humanoid cat was Black and the dumbest character in the show, the Phoebe or Kramer on the show and didn't want the only black character on the show to be dumbest so wanted another black actor as the lead to have contrast of representation. In America they did not care about the only black character being dumb, so recast the black dreadlocked character with Craig Bierko the tall blue-eyed white actor in the US version because again the show had a white female love interest for a black lead character in the UK version.

I absolutely LOVE the way that Angela was created and portrayed on this show. She was intelligent, articulate, natural, and she was unambiguously black. They did not just make her a sidekick to Topanga, Which is often done with black characters. They gave her own background, her own love interest, and meet her complex.
I also love that they did not make them being interracial the focus of their relationship.

I also appreciated the fact that in the show, her being black was never mentioned in the show. It's like the writers wanted to create an undertone of it doesn't matter, who cares? Look at her as just another character like the rest of the cast. That's how it should be. Black folk always wanna self segregate nowadays which is completely counter productive.

I don't think that I, as well as other fans would have had an issue with Angela moving on, if Shawn had an alternative love interest that he cared about just as much as Angela. Except, he didn't. He didn't have much chemistry with Katie which makes sense since the only reason why they married is so that Maya can have a father figure. But did he really have to marry her for that to be the case? Cause I don't think so. Maya is the glue to their relationship, so as Maya gets older and more independent, the cracks in their relationship will start to show which will inevitably lead to a divorce.

    • @T1J
      @T1J  2 года назад +158

well i think the show wanted to argue that Shawn really loved Katie lol but I agree they didn't really have a lot of time to develop the relationship. But the general concept of Shawn being able to find love because of what he learned from his time with Angela is a good story imo

@@T1J But sadly that isn't the story they told. If they really wanted to go a realistic route like they claimed since most high school couples don't end up together then they could have at least respected the relationship by mentioning it but not bringing her back and minimizing it OR having them re-meet later in life divorced or with kids and getting together then and forming a blended family

And for all the hype about Shawn suddenly getting smitten with Katy (and his former bond with Angela getting retrotrashed), and the resulting marriage & him becoming Maya's new father, wound up being a waste because they did NOTHING with that after the wedding! I know that Mr. Strong only agreed to do a tiny number of shows (could it be because he HATED how they retrotrashed his longtime bond with Angela- and Shawn's entire progress as a person?) and he'd not appear again until the Season Three/Series Finale. However, the writers COULD have had Maya, Katy, Riley, Cory, Topanga, etc. make asides about how Shawn was doing as a new husband and father and how the three were adjusting to each other but they literally only mentioned him very briefly TWO times before he made his final appearance in that Finale with him celebrating adopting Maya. Even his adoption of Maya was lame because the very first thing she did was TELL him and Katy that she was going to live in London with Riley and the Matthewses and neither of her parents put up the slightest objections (e.g. 'No, you will VISIT them whenever school, our finances and the Matthewses' hospitality permits AND with OUR permission especially since you're too young to get a passport on your own and you have no job + no money for airfare ). Of course, at the end, Topanga decided to stay in NYC and Maya just wound up getting summoned by Riley to her room one last time where Riley declared for only the zillionth time that they'd always be friends and THAT is how they ended Season Three and the Series!

Idc what they say. Shawn didn’t love Katie. He loved her daughter. The spoiled brat acted like Shawn had to be with her mother. She was so hard up and desperate to have a dad. Sure it could have been mixed with a variety of guys, but it made clear that she wasn't self-hating even though she was surrounded by whiteness. It helped that I also never got the sense that she was vying for Shawn's whiteness, or that he was better than the other guys as the white protagonist. It's unfortunately a popular trope when it comes to black female characters in particular (The Take talked about it recently, though they included biracial characters as well). We're there for a little spice, but it's like the black character in a horror movie: It's ultimately not meant for us to have a satisfying conclusion. We're just there to round things out for a bit.
Honestly, compared to what she went through behind the scenes, I couldn't care less about the on-screen at this point (though it is problematic).

@@LadyAstarionAncunin so I never watch ABC/NBC/FOX shows like I actually hate them lol
However, the lady in my life recently got me to watch greys anatomy and oh. My. Gosh. I’ve never seen better written black people. They’re actually people with feelings and opinions and goals and fears. It was surprising as hell and incredibly refreshing.
As a stereotypical large disgruntled black man, it can be weird sometimes to live a life where I experience severe anxiety, am scared of the dark, pretty sensitive in general and very empathetic. It’s like two parts of my identity that don’t fit together based entirely on my experience perceiving the world.
In an episode in I think season 9, a black security guard is frightened when he arrives at the hospital, and ultimately runs out in a gown and is panicking. I was taken aback at how human he was and not just some stereotype-and that was just a single-episode random character. There are many other series regulars that are black that have fully fleshed out personalities and emotions. I’m gonna stop but it’s legit the best I’ve seen (I don’t watch much shows/movies tho to be fair).
One small note, however, the show in general does a very poor job with men. Not that it’s an issue-it’s a chick show and men have had more than enough time and energy devoted to stories about them (I mean patriarchy? The world? It’s entire history?) so it’s not like a gripe, but the lack of well-written men is really the only time when the writing of blackness is done poorly and it’s just because it’s men being written as idealistic deities of patience and forgiveness. Hope that all makes sense

what girl meets world did to their relationship, to this day, makes me upset. by all means, I understand that not every couple works out in the end and that was even the writers' excuse for not putting them back together, but the way the show treated her and their relationship as a whole was just insulting. as a black woman, boy meets world was one of the few shows where a black love interest wasn't seen as disposable so it was very satisfying seeing a white man so madly in love with a black (BLACK) woman...and girl meets world just threw all of that in the trash. with other disposable black love interests, they're often there for a few episodes at most so I think what hurts about this show is that since Angela was there for such a long time, they essentially stringed us along for years having us think that a black woman was going to get her happy ending...and then girl meets world came along. that show tried to convince us that Shawn never loved her to begin with, Cory and topanga act like they don't even know who she is, and the new characters are mean to her for literally no reason, and to top it off they treat her so poorly and talk down on her all to hype up the blonde woman that is Shawn's new love interest and topanga's new best friend. I hate the argument that they tried to demonstrate "realism" by not putting them together, simply because of Cory's relationships with every other BMW character. I swear, Cory and topanga keep in contact with EVERYONE, even characters who were on very few episodes of the original show, and yet when it comes to their best friend from college, she is the one person the writers suddenly want to use to show that people grow apart
so to me it wasn't that this high school/college couple didn't work out and went their separate ways, it was more like the show said that in order to give these two white people a happy ending, they needed to villainize, sh*t on and write out their one black character. I'll always be salty

Angela is the best character on the show for me. She was so warm and real and dressed so cute. Shawn and Angela were my favorite part of BMW and also the most interesting part. They are in my top favorite couples on TV alongside Mulder and Scully and Joey and Pacey from Dawson's Creek. I will never not be upset at what they did with this couple and the real life racism Trina McGee faced. It's cool that the talk about this show isn't just about Corey and Topanga these days like it was in the 90s and 2000s.

I enjoyed this video! I related to this couple so much. I was always the poor and troubled good looking kid who had no parental or family support, didn’t have stable housing, or any money or adults to depend on. Shawn was so relatable in every way. I always hoped I’d find my Angela and was super heartbroken to hear that Girl Meets World was even a thing and purposely didn’t watch because I knew they wouldn’t put Shawn and Angela together and I’m happier with the fan fiction inside my head 😂

I watched Boy Meets World through reruns on disney channel because the low-income housing complex we lived in had cable. Shawn was a very important character to me, as a kid who was poor, from a dysfunctional household, and severely depressed. I was very attached to him and wished he could be my older brother so I could have someone who would understand and not shame me for how i felt.
My partner grew up in the same boat. Poor, neglected, unstable in many similar ways. We met in high school, but didn't become a couple until years after graduation. I've helped them through grief and other hard times, and on my lowest days they've always taken a moment to remind me that i am not a difficult to love and that they don't consider me a burden not worth the effort. We have cats and plan to be together for the rest of our lives.
Maybe we're like if Shawn and Angela made it work. Except more queer and disabled lol

yeah, it’s very clear that shawn and angela both had very deep rooted issues stemming from their childhood that they had to work through. though, it was very refreshing seeing them overcome the hurdles that were causing them to repeatedly self-sabotage and the scene where they got back together was genuinely so heartfelt and such an emotionally rewarding moment, honestly up there as one of the most earnest “i love you” scenes in general. even though part of me is genuinely upset that they didn’t end up together as, to me, they’re essentially twin flames and were just so intensely connected to each other (not simply in regards to emotional trauma), i do believe the biggest problem people have in regards to their portrayal in GMW is that angela’s character and relationships were severely diminished, almost erased entirely. not just with shawn, but with topanga and corey as well. there are many factors that make it very hard to believe that they just never spoke again after angela left to go to europe for a year (especially since she intended to go back to finish university, i’m pretty sure). the fact that they had to basically retcon her existence in relation to the others to prop up another ship was such a bad disservice to angela and the complicated but very meaningful journey she went on with shawn.

The only issue I have with this is, are people who come from traumatic backgrounds just doomed then? Sometimes you just go through life without ever getting closure one the things that weigh your mind or have affected your personal relationships and there's really not a whole lot you can do about it. Not everyone has the luxury of having a support system or being financially stable enough to seek therapy. Its something that's kind of bothered me about people who say that one needs to work on themselves before they get into a relationship. Expecting someone else to 'fix' you (or using others as a drug to feel good) shouldn't be an aim in a relationship but at the same time I also don't think people should avoid relationships completely either.

no. michael jacobs jsut wanted to subtly shoehorn Christianity into it and act as if innocent seeming couples like cory and topanga who've known each other all their lives, despite being a fantasy, are relationships to strive for. most ppl dont marry their high school sweetheart let alone knew each other since theyr were little kids

    • @Keesha_Hardy
      @Keesha_Hardy Год назад +1

@@MsDudette21 This comment is confusing. People from troubled upbringings can have healthy relationships, there is obviously healing that needs to happen, and that is something that aligns with Christian redemption & growth as well.
I honestly just think that they didn’t want any relationship or characters to outshine Cory & Topanga, being that they were the main characters. I don’t think that has to do with trying to shoehorn in Christianity. Every show will do that, or they’ll develop a spin-off with those side characters.
And if Michael Jacobs is a Christian, his beliefs will come through in all his work, just like anyone else with their set beliefs. That’s how it works.

But from a narrative perspective, it was just so heartbreaking to see them part ways. And that it was okay, that not every relationship is story book perfect. For me what they did in GMW, makes no sense. They tried to down play their relationship. Clearly Angela meant a lot to Shawn, idk why the show tried to make it seem like it did not. We need a rewrite on their story or a better Fanfic about their relationship

I always liked Topanga too because she was different from most teen girls but Angela was alot more like my friends and even myself. I also related more to Shawn too than others because i grew up lower middle class and my father had been abandoned and grew up like Shawn so he wanted a better life for me but made it known that life isnt fair and almost Los ng my mother to cancer drove that home. Especially because she was added for diversity. At that time, people were unhappy with ABC's TGIF night's because there were few minorities on TV, and I think Urkel's show was one of, if not the only black show on at the time. The networks started adding more minorities, so there may be multiple shows with an all white cast, who suddenly have minorities on them for a few episodes or season.

I went and watched the video you referenced. The Take does not make good videos. They are the kind of smarmy, slick over-produced content that I couldn't watch more than a few minutes of. It felt like I was watching a commercial for a fast food restaurant. It presents itself as expressing revelatory or new information but does it in the most basic way possible. The way the voiceover over-emotes is particularly grating. I much prefer this video. It's real and thoughtful and does not feel or sound like an advertisement.

I apologize if my comment seemed to be disagreement on the facts or criticism of you for referencing it. That wasn't my intent. It was entirely the style and production that caused my reaction. Angela was one of my main childhood crushes, I suppose it was not just because she was cute as a button but I saw myself in Shawn so I identified with them as a couple and lived vicariously through them. I was that poor White kid that never had many of the things "normal" kids had including a Dad who died when I was a baby and my Mom had me very late in life, she was the age of many of my friends grandmothers and died of cancer before I finished school. I was never hungry or lacked basics but it was a challenging childhood and I identified with Shawn so seeing him and Angela make it was a inspiration to a kid who never had many victories in life, I hated when they broke up, thankfully I was getting older and better able to cope with all the problems life through at me by then.

Man, this show was so good, and honestly I feel like it played a very important role in US entertainment.
Like Sitcoms and other shows that spanded years would often fall apart when the actors would age, but the writers wouldn’t take this into consideration.
An example, is often when an actress got pregnant, they’d use tricks to hide her belly, or just say “Oh this character suddenly decided to follow their dreams and travel the world.”
Though it wasn’t due to getting pregnant but 7th Heaven basically removed one of the main characters with no explanation.
Game of Thrones made an interesting decision with replacing the actors, and other series use time skips.
Vikings would use very cool techniques like slowly adding in gray hair on Ragnar, lengthened beards. Added crows feat / wrinkles to particular characters.
During the seasons, covering a long period of time, doing all these small things each episode.
So when the next season aired, the passage of time wouldn’t be as noticeable.
But there’s something magical about growing up with a series.
