Rest in Peace, Johnny Crawford (1946-2021) Interview with THE RIFLEMAN'S Johnny Crawford! AWOW!

- Johnny Crawford (1946-2021) had been fighting the terrible affliction known as Alzheimer's disease when this special edition of A WORD ON WESTERNS was filmed but few people realized it so I held our interview back until March 29, 2020. You know Johnny as young Mark McCain on TV's classic western series, "The Rifleman." You may know him as a singer and Pop Star, with early hits like "Cindy's Birthday" and, later, as the leader and singer of a swing band. You may also know that he's as a rodeo-ridin' cowboy who can throw a mean lasso. Johnny was born March 26, 1946 and died April 29, 2021. Johnny's story is amazing. He began working in front of cameras at the age of five and developed a passion for music, horses and silent movies. And, unlike actor's today, who are guaranteed lifetime residuals, there were none when Johnny was 11 and starring with Chuck Connors on "The Rifleman" (1958-1963). We all grew up watching Johnny as Mark McCain, watching him grow up, too. In fact, the series is still being broadcast in reruns all over the world and a new generation is growing up with the same positive role models and strong Father-Son bond that was a good influence on many of us. While Johnny and Chuck are now both gone, THE RIFLEMAN and the moral lessons on the series are still playing worldwide...constantly. We've been very lucky to have Johnny share his stories and continue to enjoy his legacy of work. Rest in Peace, my saddle pal.

Can you imagine actors in Hollywood today being as humble as Johnny Crawford? This guy was a genuinely good guy!
He sure was, MGR. Thanks.
Underrated for sure he was at his best on the rifleman, one of the best shows of the fifties!!!!
During this time, it's nice that people are still caring for others, despite the panic being pushed in the media.
Sadly we can no longer trust news media as reliable .
Never will forget him he was a nice kid on that show
Thanks for the likes
Thank you for showing us that interview. I’ve had numerous friends suffer with Alzheimer’s. Any disease is bad, but Alzheimer’s is exceptionally terrible, robbing a person of their mind.
Fantastic memories growing up with Mark, Lucas and Micah. Great role models. Still watch the reruns....
I watch the rifle man every day. Love it
I have so much love for this man hes a beautiful soul I have been a fan of the rifleman forever praying for his strength and wellness mr Crawford you are a beautiful person please stay strong and keep the faith and know just how well loved you are
When you watch the Rifleman, the writing and story telling is so good, it’s as if the sum of all the parts is bigger than the whole. So many of the shows today are little more than eye candy. The Rifleman was a morality lesson.
Every time I watch The Rifleman I can't believe that that wonderful boy has died of Alzheimer's.
I watched Johnny on Rifleman as a child with my brother who had a Rifleman gun and when it would come on he would be ready to fire his gun with Chuck Conner at the beginning of the show. My brother is gone now but we both loved Johnny Crawford in the show. I wish Johnny the best in his struggle with Alzheimer's.
Thanks, cindy.
In this interview Johnny sez whatever comes to his mind but he still had a bunch of memories to recount. The disease has now robbed him of the ability to speak.
To me, this life wouldn't make sense if this is all there was. Life has transcendent value and I hope Johnny had faith in God and walked it out.
Most people think he has 💵 stashed away but obviously he has treasures of higher value, true friends.♡ 🤗 ♡
- People call it God, Heaven, Spirit Life, Next Life, Unknown Dimension ... I don't pretend to know but I believe there is another existence for us other than this life on earth. ✨
Alzheimer’s is a very cruel way to check out. My prayers go out to Johnny
I'm watching the Rifleman right now! In my opinion in the same class as Bonanza and Gunsmoke! Chuck Connors was a true legend! I only started watching The Rifleman in my 30's my father is 70 not too much younger than Johnny so I had to look him up again and see what he was up to; sorry to hear his condition. My prayers will be with him.
He always smiled. Rest In Peace Johnny.
I'm 63 and watched the Rifleman. My brother, sister and I just loved the show.
I'm 63 also I love the old Westerns
This is heartbreaking. I have been watching the Rifleman reruns everyday. God bless him.
Me too. Neighbor introduced me about a month ago. Now I've gone through all 5 seasons. Such a good show with good morals. Chuck and Johnny are forever in my DNA. And God bless them and all of us.
Your a good man Rob Word. Thanks !
He is quite skinny too. I pray he gets the help he needs. When I watch old westerns I couldn't imagine anyone else playing the part of Mark because they simply wouldn't have been as good.
Thanks! I just donated to Johhny’s fund. Not being computer savvy, I just went to yahoo and typed in ‘Johnny Crawford go fund me’ and the site opened up....it took my credit card information easily. I actually named my son after Johnny’s character on the Rifleman (Mark)- because I was always impressed with every episode teaching a moral, focusing on a good, strong father (Luke) raising his child Mark). And I read over the years that behind the scenes, young Johnny was always polite and respectful to everyone on the set, janitor, sound man, everyone. He’s a good man.
Lewis Clark
I don´t understand this video. It says he needs help raising money. Don´t you have a National Health Service in the USA? All medical treatment is free here in England.
I remember being a little 5 year old kid and a children's hospital waking up from surgery and guess what TV show was on when I woke up I remember The rifleman such a sweet show great actors Johnny Crawford gone but not forgotten
My cousin Rosie and I had a huge crush on Johnny when we were kids...Bless him..God watch over Johnny and his precious wife Charlotte.
Thanks, Joanne.
R.I.P. Johnny Crawford (Mark). My husband and I still watch The Rifleman. Thanks for the memories. Condolences to his family.
I never missed an episode of the Rifleman, I loved Chunk Connors and Johnny Crawford they just worked so well together. I know Chuck is gone now so I will say God Bless Johnny, you are still loved by this fan!!!
I lost my father to alzheimer last year at the age of 92
I will be praying for him
I was a struggling single mom and when I found the reruns of the Rifleman I found a kindred spirit in Lucas McCain. I was so touched by your acting Mr. Crawford that I did my best to raise my son to be like Mark. My son is now 27 and never gave me any trouble. Mr. Crawford you are an incredible actor and an inspiration to everyone. Thank you for being so wonderful.
My heart is weeping so many tears right now. I hope right now he is roping that calf and then singing with Heaven's biggest and best band.
I am a lady "Charlotte, 75. BD May 13. All our family loved The Rifleman. I loved Johnny singing. And acting. It is too bad he could not live on his ranch and his wife. And have a live in nurse. Love you Johnny. God Bless.
I didn't know he was such a good musician..beautiful voice..
So sweet. Such a loss. Alzheimers is a terrible disease. Thank you for posting this. Rest In Peace.
My mother had it. Sad indeed. Seems like you younger you get it the faster you go.
I just sent my sister Cindy Johnny’s song to her for her birthday! How absolutely special is that?
Very, very special, Cory
One of my favorite tv shows after school!!! Lost my mother almost 4 yrs ago to Alzheimer's. Hope his loved ones give him as much time and love as possible!! It'll mean more than you can imagine!!!
Well, this tore me to pieces. You are a good, loyal friend, Rob Word. I'll go donate.
What's not to love? Johnny Crawford was quite a character and a really remarkable, multifaceted man who lived his life to the fullest. Even with the "belt starting to slip" he was still a consummate showman and he reminded us how he could still charm and hold an audience. The world was a better place while he was in it. May he Rest In Peace, he brought joy to so many for so long. Once again, Thanks Rob for sharing this.
Thanks, Johnny was a big part of my childhood.
The Rifleman was such an amazing show, and Johnny was so good as Mark! May God grant him grace, peace, and mercy; and give us a cure for this horrible disease!
Dear Johnny Crawford, You were the best. Thank you for all you gave to other people. Raised my kids these past 10 years watching old reruns of the Rifleman with you and Chuck Connors and all those wonderful actors and actresses that graced that show over its 4-5 year run. May you all be peacefully reunited on that movie set in Heaven. God bless you and rest in peace.
Love Johnny. The Rifleman was great T.V. God bless.
I met Mr. Crawford couple years ago at the cowboy fest in Newhall CA. It was a great honor to meet the kid (Mark McCain) whom is the example I use to raise my 3 sons. Thank you Mr. Crawford for your amazing work and career.
Very cool!
I was introduced to the Rifleman by my husband. I now watch faithfully the re-runs. My favorite part of each show was whenever "Mark" would ride a horse. He was such a great young rider. God bless you💗💗
I’ve always loved this show...! Having worked with dementia patients much of my near 30 year nursing career I can only hope you’re as loved by your staff as I do my patients. God bless you, Johnny! #ilovethemccains
How could someone believe actors and actresses made a lot of money back in 1958?
He seems like a very caring and sweet Man!
Yes, he is, Robert. Thanks.
Johnnies sister was my neighbor... I remember having words with him on Christmas one year
Thanks, Sandra. I've got an unaired segment with Johnny singing "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" for an AWOW this Christmas!
You’re a good man Rob Word
Thanks, Lee. Talking with people like Johnny sure makes it look easy.
Lee Agreed! ♥️
Johnny just a class act
I grew up watching Rifleman and watch the reruns on TV today.
I hate to hear Johnny is suffering with Alzheimer's. I loved The Rifleman (especially Johnny) as a child. I know I join numerous fans who will be praying for him.
GOD'S SPEED 🙏 JOHNNY , RIP 😇 MY FRIEND , AMERICA 🇺🇸 WILL NOT FORGET YOU
Everything goes away in this world except the love you have for others. That stays with you even after they are gone. Love never fails.
I admit to having a schoolgirl crush on his “Mark McCain” character! 🥰🤪 Been binge watching The Rifleman the past month on Amazon Prime. Will donate and be praying for Johnny Crawford ‘s soul.💕😇🙏🏽💕🙏🏻
Thanks, Taylor.
As a child, I thought he had the greatest life a kid could have, and the coolest father!!! I wish those family values were more common today!!!
the rifleman has always been my favorite tv western. Johnny was a huge part of why i enjoyed the show. to me, Johnny as mark is the best acting by any young male actor in a tv series ever. he did not merely play himself. he had to act. God bless you Johnny Crawford.
Of all the talents he had,his sense of humor was exceptional. And believe me,humor IS a talent...if you ever met or personally know someone without a sense of humor, you will understand what I mean.
You were so lucky to have known him and had him play at your wedding...you were truly blessed.
Thanks, TS. He was very, very special.
IF you notice I just found your videos.. I got to meet Mr.Crawford and spent the day with him and his ex-wife.. I can tell you they are good people so sorry here this .. I hope everyone who can help him and his family.
Thanks, David, for your kind thoughts.
This is such a horrible disease that rob's people of their VERY self, as it steals their memories and personality! Thank u for this ❤️ and thank u for putting up an address where we can send help for his brave fight against this terrible disease! Luv u Johnny!! Thank u again!

how very sad , what a beautiful human being we have lost
Thank you Rob for your special memories....RIP Johnny
I was raised on the Rifleman And Rawhide, Wagon Train , may God bless you Johhny Crawford!
R.I.P Johnny. Sorry to hear of your passing
very sad, he had a great run for a great person !
Thank you for the look back and Johnny’s career and update on how he is doing. Alzheimer’s Disease is such a devastating affliction and it so hard watch as it simply takes everything a person had, had and will have. These are hard times for everyone, and more so for those needing skilled nursing care. Thank you again, Rob. Be well and stay safe to all.
You’re doing the work of the angels Rob. My dad was the son of a rancher (in the Cowboy Hall of Fame) and we loved watching The Rifleman together. I think he felt that Johnny’s character reflected a bit of his younger self on my granddad’s ranch.
It’s an honor to be able to thank Mr. Crawford in this tiny way.
Thanks, Rose. Please share more info about your father.
Thank you for sharing this Rob
And for the opportunity to help Johnny.
While I'm still working as (one of the essential workers) which I never thought that
Working for Stater Bros Markets all these years would land me in that category for situations such as this, I'm glad to help. 👍
My husband and l just love him and Chuck Connors. Its such a terrible disease, and for Johnny to get it just brakes our hearts. What a marvelous man and gentleman xoxo
Thanks, Laura. It's a tragic way to go.
It is comforting to know Johnny has family and friends that standing with him. May God bless all.
We saw Johnny making a public appearance at the (National Western) Denver Stock Show about five years. Smiling as usual. He still looked good.
That's wonderful,, tell Mr Crawford that to have faith that we love him and God bless you kid,,
Thanks, Awilda. I will pass along your love to Johnny. He's in good hands.
It is indeed a terrible disease that requires very special care. I sent a donation. Thank you for keeping Mr. Crawford in the spotlight.
Hey, Johnny, thanks for all the good memories you brought us on The Rifleman! You had to be a smart kid to remember all those lines!
I'm currently homeless, but will keep you in my prayers!
It's pretty stupid that the entertainment industry got away with screwing talented kids out of residuals and real pay for their hard work back then!
Perhaps your people here can get some talented lawyer to go after the corporate entity who currently owns that series, because it's STILL on over the air television!
They're using your work to charge people for entertainment, and sales of advertising, so it seems to me that they should be compensating you in some manner for it!
Good luck, Johnny. Prayers, cowboy!
I didn't know he had Alzheimer's. He's still a handsome guy that entertained many. It's nice to see him still holding ground.
There are newer therapies that can help this. Certainly he's worth every minute of it. I hope he's doing better with such grasp on living he should have a good outcome.
Godbless Johnny Crawford ...
R. i.p. Johnny Crawford. What a talented soul.
Lord Bless him! I also ask the God bless this great nation!
Thanks Rob.
You are so good with your interviews!
Thanks, Connie. I appreciate your kind words.
What a wonderful video with Johnny speaking. So so horrible with him fighting this Alzheimer's disease. May the good Lord Bless him and Charlotte thru these terrible times. And those who can help financially, please give what you can to help care for Johnny. We loved him so much as Mark McCain, now as Johnny Crawford. Bless Everyone.
Thank You for letting us know that Johnny needs help. Everyday after school at 4pm I couldn’t wait to watch The Rifleman. I loved Lucas and Mark. Johnny was such a great child actor. I still watch it on videos today. I made a donation and I appreciate your help. Love and Prayers to Johnny for all the joy he’s brought into my life. ❤️
I have been a fan of Johnny, since I first saw the Rifleman. I then became another fan of his when I heard him sing. I have 28 of Johnny's songs in my favourites and still enjoy them as much now, as when I first heard them. Good Bless Him...... I am the youngest of a family of eight... born 1944, not far off Johnny's age I had three of my sisters pass away while suffering from different stages of Alzheimer's, it is an insidious disease. Very nice of you to show your caring for Johnny, Rob.......... Barry, Ontario, Canada.
Hello I love you in the rifleman. I still watch the rifleman still today.
We DO love Johnny ~ him being on The Rifleman is such a big childhood memory for me and and brothers ~ stay well Johnny! Thanks A Word on Westerns for this special video ~ you and your family stay well too!

I was Born 1958. I came up watching The Rifleman.love to see Chuck Connors shoot that rifle he was very bad.and fast, okay; Johnny was a boy that every kid bk than.wanted to be,, ,,,,,S.I.P.From DJ Skippo.
Wonderful guy
I think the entire Hollywood community should step in to help with his medical bills, cause they are the ones who are in the best position to help another Hollywood icon.
Hollywoods greedy
@@suzieparis6821 Nah, not all.
Agree these not funny comedians are paid millions per episode of their smut shows so Hollywood should help someone decent out when they need it ! They are the ones who took advantage of him decades ago to begin with ...
@@dannylee1987 hollywood doesnt know decent..therefore..they only help themselves n those who can promote them
He's legend Mr Johnny crowford,, you are also a legend,,a western legend both you I'm honored to be able to see him here in this amazing video.. I'm not Rich I'm poor but I always pray to God that all my favorites actor's will be okay,, thank you so much for being here..
I can't remember a time without Johnny. I was a t.v. addict as a kid, and, of course, "The Rifleman" was a staple in my home. In 2012, I just happened to be in the right place at the right time to perform with Johnny for one night.
Life is strange . . . and sad sometimes. Johnny still makes me happy. Thank you, Rob.
Johnny Crawford will live on forever with the Rifleman series as new generations discover the show and Chuck Connors too
Johnny is very blessed.
I'm a volunteer at several assisted living facilities where I am constantly meeting sad and lonely people who have absolutely no one else who cares or visits them...
I do appreciate your help and support for Johny, but he's being well cared for compared to many people who have the same disease...
Thanks for the update and for the love you have for this very precious soul.🌹🙏
Thank you, Philip.
Growing up watching cowboy tv shows and movies in the 1960s were good family shows. Wonderful times and good memories. Take care, Johnny Crawford.
I enjoy watching Johnny on the riflemen, May God Continue To Blessed and Keep Him!!!
I had a mad crush on Johnny and watched The Rifleman every week. But then the Beatles came along and my fickle heart left Johnny in the rearview mirror. I have donated to his fund and he still has my love and respect.
I wished they still made shows like; The Rifleman, Daniel Boone, Spin and Marty, Sky King, there’s way to much junk on television these days
We try to cover all those (my favorites, too) in our back catalogue of interviews. More coming from the archives every Sunday morning on A WORD ON WESTERNS...for the near future. Keep watching and stay safe.
Lee
Yes, turned off the TV five years ago. Have not missed it
Tom Edgar Same here...luckily I catch a few older shows & movies online.
Not only was this very touching but I never knew Johnny was so dang funny! Talented, humble and funny, even as knew his memory was going. His self-deprecating comments when he lost his train of thought were delightful and a little sad at the same time. That was a special interview Rob. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you, Grant. He sure was terrific that day! Hopefully many people will share this for him, too.
Condolences to his family and to you Rob.
Thank you very much, Marsha.
Rest in peace Johnny
He was a great child actor.
Thanks, Lawrence. He certainly was!
I'm 65 and watched the rifleman in the 60s......I didn't notice any signs of dementia. Hell, I couldn't have told those stories as smoothly......
This is part of another interview that was done in 2015
Tim Williams If you understand dementia it’s very obvious, but if you’ve not been around people with dementia not so much. That’s why family and friends have so much trouble realizing their loved one is having trouble and needs help. This also means the Alzheimer’s Association isn’t doing such a good job of public education regarding symptoms.
@@zuzuspetals9281 ---> Well, what symptoms is he having? I've worked alongside ppl with much more reason to be scrutinized than him. I suppose if I worked with him I wud see his issues much more clearly....but just not in this video.
zuzu's petals I’ve seen you before...loved the name you chose: zuzu’s petals! 💕🌸
“About what” 😂 lol! Got a hearty chuckle from that! It breaks my heart to see him slowly being silenced. 😩. God bless him and you too Rob for your support to this fine person.
Nice job Rob, gracious of you to be his wingman during his memory lapses then. Take care and thanks for this...
