Also, 33:40: please do NOT let Niko enter Adobe Audition. That's like being sent to Brazil. One more thing I wanted to add (I read this on Reddit and I really liked it) was [spoilers] how the world talks a lot about "taming". Making a non-living creature feel completely real through the emotions of a living creature. This would be a great allegory for Niko. You get so emotionally attached to them that you almost believe they are real. You essentially experience taming first-hand when playing the game. It's what gives this game such a unique, powerful and beatiful emotional punch.

It's been nice getting re-acquainted with this game after your interview jogged my memory of its existence. I played it shortly after the full release, so not only has it been a while, but the experience was somewhat stifled at the time by the long shadow of Undertale (I remember laughing my ass off at that character in the library who's crossing out sections of her book that look too similar to material the Author published since she wrote it. Kinda transparent if you're in the right headspace...). It's the kind of thing that I really need to replay and get a fresh perspective on, since there were definitely topics you touched on here that might have passed a bit over my head during my initial exposure, but... you know. The devs kind of outsmarted themselves in that regard. I do remember thinking, though, that the Solstice was a fascinating attempt to achieve the narrative equivalent of "having your cake and eating it too". If you played it on release, you really did get to experience the the gut-punch original ending to its full extent. You had to genuinely come to terms with your choice before any hope of the "true ending" was offered, because said ending literally did not exist at the time. Contrast this with Undertale, whose "secret true ending" was built into the 1.000 version and was pretty much common knowledge within a few days. That game's neutral ending is very strong, but the outcome felt more like a speed bump than a the "enjoy your free sleepless night" situation in One Shot. Because the original ending is so soul-crushing, that big incandescent countdown on the wall was maybe the most exciting single setpiece I've ever encountered in a game, and the day the update actually dropped became this sort of surreal, ARG-like _event_ that elevated the story's conclusion way beyond the sum of its parts. I suspect that by playing it so long after-the-fact you missed out on some of that gravitas, which maybe makes it understandable that you prefer the original ending. In a way, the way the game was released might contribute more to the "one shot" philosophy in the long-term than the actual measures the game takes to render itself un-replayable after your first run, since save files can always be erased with enough effort, but it will never again be possible to play One Shot in a pre-solstice world.
That's a really interesting and unique take on OneShot. I haven't considered what the game and fandom must of been like prior to Solstice and the anticipation for it. I know I didn't touch on the countdown timer in the elevator room in my video (I actually found out about it towards the end of producing this and the interview). And I'm glad my videos helped bring back your memories with OneShot 😊
I finished solstice yesterday and i am still wondering how this game and this channel has such low recognition for how great they are! P.S. I LOVE the art work in this video ❤
You have no idea how hard I was freaking out when you got to what happens when you close the original game. If I were you and were making my own vid on the game, I don't think I would have had it in me to actually go through with that. This game just gets to you, man...
The effort put into this video is incredible! Super underrated channel. I've been watching some more of your stuff and was excited to see that all of your videos carry such a charm to them.
OneShot will always have a very special place in my heart. It was the first game I LPed, in the midst of a life-altering identity crisis. The mood of the art and music, the player's relationship with Niko, the other characters struggling to get through another day, and the meta puzzles all touched me in a way no other game has.
Huge spoilers: I understand why some people don't like the undercutting of the original ending. I personally find it a really meaningful subversion about how our connections to media are valuable and, in a sense, make the characters we get attached to rreal. I find looking back with a year between my original playthrough and solstice that oneshot left me to sit with what option I choose long enough for it to be meaningful and get its own happy ending and bringing the player's actions once again to the forefront. With most of the solstice ending being a slow motion train reck where the world falls apart because you couldn't leave good enough alone. Then that scene with the world machine which is basically just Niko pouring out all of the emotions that I experienced while playing this game ❤. Never had anything like that happen in a game and I think that's the real "oneshot brand" for lack of a better term.
I'm gonna keep this quick, but at the original ending of the game, I truly felt defeated. It gives the huge looming dread, of what will happen. It was actually the first game that i bought that goes this deep. Undertale? I watched someone play it. Deltarune, I love it, but OneShot is a different level of deep. Anyway, next up is the console version! I am HYPED for it, and I want to buy it for myself to see how they implemented the game into consoles!
One thing I appricate with the game is how my choice at the end of the first run made the solstice run feel very differently for me. On the tower I chose to sacrefice the world to bring Niko home. At this point in the game I had figurued out that the world was just a simulation in my computer and even if I saved it the world would not remain once I closed the game. it was either shatter the light bulb and let the world die but Niko could go home or "save" the world but leave Niko in a effectivly dead world anyways but this time Niko is trapped in it. When booting up the game and doing the solstice run it made me feel so guilty for brining Niko back to the world right after I let them escape and return. I had undone all of that and now Niko was back in the same world as before but this time things got so so much worse than before. A game has never ever made me feel this level of panic, fear, dread and regret for what I had done to Niko. I effectivly made the entire outcome worse for Niko and it was all based on the hum that I *might* get a better ending this time. The balcony scene at the clock tower really made me feel bad or Niko since I thought I had doomed them to die with this world. My relief when it all worked out in the end was immeasurable. Both choices where "wrong" but it feels like if I would have picked to save the world at least the solstice run would have been justifiable since it would be to save Niko and the world. But since I already saved Niko it feelt very bad to bring them back again for seemingly no reason other than a faint whisper that the world might becmoe better after this.
Honestly, the Solstice run kinda reminds me of Bravely Second's NG+, with the whole "the godlike player refuses to accept a bad outcome and uses their power to change fate and achieve a better outcome", and I rather like it for that reason.
Adding onto this, my interpretation is that BOTH your chosen ending AND the Solstice ending are canon, with the player's regret over the former being the main reason that the latter even exists in the first place (well, that and the Author's regret for you having to have made that decision in the first place).
This video is really awesome,I had the same feeling when playing Oneshot. Thanks for giving me so much backstory and stuff, and I love some of the expressions in the video, it makes this video really interesting.I feel like your videos are a bit out of line with your subscribers, you deserve more subscribe rs ❤️❤️!
I thought your channel was popular until I looked at your subscriber count and view count, your videos are REALLY high quality and I’ll be sharing these with my friends!
The absolute weight that the devs were able to add to the final choice is amazing. The entire game, the characters and world told you that returning the bulb would bring Niko home. When you finally learn the truth, it's heartbreaking. Knowing you can't save the world and Niko at the same time, and the fact that you only have this one shot to do the right thing, makes the choice insanely difficult to make.
I do feel like solstice waters down the original experience you may have had with the game. The original, pre solstice playthrough has so much weight to it because of your tie to niko and, in extense, to the world you've shared with them. I imagine that solstice was made to ask and answer the question: Should you really care about niko and this world at all? They're fictional, aren't they? Just a game after all. And while these are genuinely interesting questions, Im still not sure they needed to be solved within this game. If anything, not getting an easy answer makes this game much more gut wrenching and hard to wrap your head around, which I believe to be its core identity. I loved this video.
Amazing video, and as a person who also gets very emotional over some things I cried watching this too lol Side note: kind of surprised that you didn’t mention the Red/Green/Blue Refuge/Glen/Barrens thing in the colour section, but then again it took me a couple of days after playing.
Thank you! ☺️ I'm sorry for the tears 😅 but I'm glad you enjoyed it. 😄 That's true 😅 I think at the time I was trying to say as less as possible about the Refuge and Glen outside of my spoiler section as I wanted new players to go into the game as blind as possible. Though I do remember mentioning the RGB stuff during the development history side
Aww... i remembered i 1st time played this game... I was "pirated" it at first play, but after the story i bought the game... I cried! I love Niko so much and i hope hes live is happy...
Oneshot is a game that has changed my life. Before playing Oneshot I was mildly depressed and lacking motivation too really do anything. After playing Oneshot however I turned my life around trying thing I would have never tried before and hanging out with friends way more than before. And the crazy thing is I have no idea why. Other games like Oneshot never spoke too me this way and yet a game with a cute little cat person got me too care about the world again. For that reason alone Oneshot will forever be one of my favourite games. Your content is great tho mate you have gotten yourself a subscriber. keep it up :).
That's wonderful to hear and thank you for sharing that! ❤️️ It always makes me happy to see games like OneShot leave a positive impact on players and improving their lives. And I'm glad OneShot was able to help you during a rough patch and inspire you and turn things around! 😊 And thank you for the sub!!
Pretty late, perhaps, but I loved watching this! I finished OneShot in the last couple weeks myself, and it's easily become a favorite of mine, both as an RPG Maker title and game in general. I went through the free version some months prior, so my experience was definitely different. With Solstice, I think having that happy ending meant a lot to me - it didn't feel cheap, and it managed to explore an interesting theme while leaving an emotional impact. And plenty of things in fiction and the world had been plenty negative, so I appreciated it dearly. There's not really a "correct" way to experience the game, of course, so hearing your opinions was refreshing! There was a lot of effort put into this video, from the art to editing and all of the details about the development, though I still need to listen to the interview in full.(As an Irisu Syndrome enthusiast, hearing the name caught my attention! Very different fourth-wall elements, but it's super fascinating.) I'm one of many to find your videos through this game, but I'm happy that I did. I haven't watched too much more yet, as I want to first play some of the games you've talked about, but I look forward to more of your work!
This channel deserves WAY more views and subs man, like, what! :O This is one of the best reviews I've seen for a game and the amount of work you must've put into this video is insane as well. *Quality Content* my man! Bravo! I subbed and can't wait for your future uploads and for your channel to grow. I'm gonna watch the interview you did with the devs right away, thanks ;)
Aw thank you so much!! 😊 That really means a lot to me! I should have my next review up soon, I'm still editing it together. I'm glad you enjoyed the review and thank you again for the kind words and subbing to the channel 😄
So, I knew about the base game, I knew about the re-release, I knew about Solstice. Cool! I also knew the old version of the game would give you a gut punch for closing it despite the warnings, but. Hhhhholy shit? I'm someone who enjoys specifically listening to spooky media, reviews specifically, because I can never stomach the visuals, but I'm just weirdly fascinated with the horror nonetheless. I gotta tell you, my heart was beating out of my chest when you talked about The Aftermath[tm] of closing the old version of the game. It's kinda harrowing how a track can make me feel so disturbed, even though I know that if I look at the screen - there is no threat. No monster coming after Niko (actual nightmare scenario though), no jumpscare to punish the player, just the simple and direct facts. You killed Niko, you robbed them and the world of the only chance either of them had, and you are facing the consequences. It's rare that something beyond a spooky image or sound actually gets me personally, so I'm pretty much immune to the _themes_ of a given media. Here, however, I had to turn on my light for a bit and take a breather. Jesus Christ, this game is so good. Good thing that this is just a hypothetical situation, and Niko is currently back home, safe and sound, eating pancakes. :-)
I passed this shadevr 4 days ago and I'm surprised that I haven't heard about it before somehow made me look at the world in a different way, since the soulful game makes me think about a lot and makes me miss Niko... I miss Niko ....
Hey there, I just played through OneShot yesterday and wound up here after watching your interview with the developers, which was really cool! Personally, after some heavy deliberation, I decided that sending Niko home was the right option, in no small part because there's another game that's very near and dear to me that deals with an extremely similar dilemma. Obviously it's the selfish option, but to me Niko is an anomaly, and a young child, who was torn away from their family and dragged into this world against their will. To that end, you could say that giving this world a swift, graceful rest is the mercy they were called there to enact, as opposed to returning the sun and merely prolonging the inevitable. One of the things I feel OneShot does best is make that final choice nuanced and well weighted. There are very clear pros and cons and variables on both ends of the spectrum, and if you're going around talking to everybody and getting invested I think it would be more difficult not to deliberate over the ending choice. If one side felt more "correct" than the other, I think it would've taken some of the wind out of its sails. Like if it was established that returning the sun would halt the decay, for instance. It would pretty heavily skew the dilemma towards returning the sun. Really an incredible game. Only downside is, of course, it being over. But that's also what makes it so special. All I can do now is try and get at least one other person to experience this incredible game, which is kind of tricky when you really want to also be as blind as possible (I knew absolutely nothing going in, so when it popped up with my name it was a huge "oh shit" moment).
I've been thinking about why this game is not just rely on personal oppinions why so good, and actually give it a reason why this is in general a masterpiece. And there is really no reason why this wouldn't be one. The characters are literally talking to you trough the fourth wall, which make you feel responsible about this world and everyone in it, and thats why the final decision is so hard. The plot is one of the best i've ever seen (incluiding solstice), and the soundtrack... oh god the OST. Every single sound just burnt into my ears, and they could not make the atmosphere better. Any time i listen Niko and The World Machine or the Encounter, every frame pop up how it felt when i played the game. This game not just underrated but straight up unknown if we consider how it destroys any game, series, anime or movie i've seen (except Evangelion maybe).
Aw I'm happy to hear that 😄 I still need to play the Outer Wilds. It's been on my to-do list for forever now and I plan to get to at least play it before the year is over.
I'm glad I got someone with the fake out 😂 fun fact, I had to create that bit twice cause halfway through production (I started early March) RUclips updated their autoplay layout and I had to scrap my old mock up autoplay animation (also much more in favor of their previous style, I liked the circle timer and full picture of the thumbnails 😅)
27:01 they are not real, they are robots, tamed by the Creator of the World Machine (just like all other NPCs (people) in the game except niko), they said they are from the old world because they are based on the real people that the Creator knew. the only difference from the other robots is that they know about the old world and the world they are in
8:11, I already played it and loved it! I’m safe. It’s one of my favourite games next to Deltarune and for me is another game that beat Undertale by a milestone. I chose to save the world.
I gotta say, i never played this game, because i don't have a good enough PC to run this masterpiece, but GOD DAMN this game looks good to play. (still planning to play on consoles, if i'm not mistaken it is on consoles)
I had chosen the same pre-solstice ending as you, and didn't initially come to the conclusion that Niko was dead. I had thought that they were trapped in this world forever now, although still alive. And that I couldn't control them anymore because their mission was complete. This video is what made me realise that, yeah, I murdered a child, didn't I? :c I mean, the other option would have me murdering many more children, but it still hurts.
I am currently yelling at the entity on the computer saying YOU DUMB COMPUTER THING I'VE ALREADY PLAYED THE GAME, IVE DONE SOLSTICE I GOT A FEW ACHIVMENTS, JUST PLEASE LET ME WATCH THE RUclips VIDEO
Heya! So I did do an 8-hour livestream on my Twitch the day the World Machine Edition launched. (The VOD is also up on my Fox be Streaming channel). So I did get to revisit OneShot for the first time since I made this video. I absolutely adore all of the new desktop art and features included with the console port. However I don't really plan to make a whole video on it as I don't have too much else to add as to what I've already said in this one. While the impact of playing OneShot for the first time wasn't there, I had a great time revisiting it and I absolutely loved the console port.
Potential spoilers That glitchy effect when you showed the text "Solstice" made me realize that the 3 colours of the world: the blue barrens, the green glen and the red refuge; they are the 3 primary colours of light. Niko has to traverse 3 lands made up of the 3 primary colours of light, in order to restore light to the world.
Thank you for the suggestion! 😄I do have an upcoming video in the works, though it's a nostalgia game from the GameCube era instead of a recent one. I do plan to play Miitopia though! I can't promise I'll have a video on it at this time, but I'll definitely add it to my list of games to go over for future video ideas 😄
Niko... Niko... walked into Adobe Audition this is so sad 😭 (i was debating weither or not i want to suggest you a number of Free (not to confuse with freeware) video editors and stuff but i feel like i'd be annoying since i talk about it all the time)
Apologies on that 😅 I picked up on that error sometime after this video went up. I definitely have a few mispronounciations here and there and I try to keep an ear out with some of my later stuff
I'm sure my internet provider must be asking the same thing. I just hope they don't notice the hundreds of feet worth of the Ethernet cables that I have plugged in 😉
Is the version of OneShot you have linked in the description the version that you can play through multiple times with the Solstice update, or is it the shorter one that you can only play through once that you can't close the application wherever you please in? Asking because I'm thinking about starting a letsplay on my channel.
I'd say the only other game that's both meta (but in a different way) and emotional similar to how Oneshot does it is Word Game (文字游戏), where the whole world is built using Chinese characters and you progress by manipulating them. It's kinda unfortunate that since the whole story is involved around Chinese characters, it's literally impossible to get translated so you have to know how to read in Chinese and how Chinese characters are built in order to play the game at all, which means for the significant majority of the global population the game has a very high barrier of enter. That's said, Word game is a story that has an actual message to tell. Oneshot doesn't, and it's up to the player to decide what literally everything the game have told is about, which kinda make Oneshot more unique than how it make use of meta features to tell a story.
Potential spoilers... again I don't think it's fair to say that OneShot breaks the 4th wall. Instead, it IS the 4th wall, the barrier that seperates you & your world from Niko & TWMs world
“Niko then leaves the boundaries of the game, and right into Adobe Audition.”
Outta the way, Adobe. Niko’s trying to get home.

The mood of the art and music, the player's relationship with Niko, the other characters struggling to get through another day, and the meta puzzles all touched me in a way no other game has.
Huge spoilers:
I understand why some people don't like the undercutting of the original ending.
One shot is one of those games you wish you could replay unexperienced, i truly wish it got the same love undertale got
Aw thank you so much! 😄 I'm glad you enjoyed it! 😁
I thought your channel was popular until I looked at your subscriber count and view count, your videos are REALLY high quality and I’ll be sharing these with my friends!
Aw thank you so much, I really appreciate that! And thank you for sharing my videos with your friends! 😊
@@AFoxOnTheInternet no problem! Hopefully you gain lots of popularity!
I loved this video.
solstice is just a big cope
The ending is like the trolly problem, there are consequences no matter what you do
Amazing video, and as a person who also gets very emotional over some things I cried watching this too lol
Side note: kind of surprised that you didn’t mention the Red/Green/Blue Refuge/Glen/Barrens thing in the colour section, but then again it took me a couple of days after playing.
Thank you! ☺️ I'm sorry for the tears 😅 but I'm glad you enjoyed it. 😄
That's true 😅 I think at the time I was trying to say as less as possible about the Refuge and Glen outside of my spoiler section as I wanted new players to go into the game as blind as possible. Though I do remember mentioning the RGB stuff during the development history side
i personally see solstice as a continuation of the story rather than an optional route
This video makes me so happy and nostalgic.
Great video, I'm just wondering: HOW ARE YOU THIS UNDERRATED?!
Oneshot only needed a 5 second video. "What is Oneshot? Perfection" end video
this channel deserves more attention
Aw thank you! 😄
Aww... i remembered i 1st time played this game...
This is one of the best reviews I've seen for a game and the amount of work you must've put into this video is insane as well.
I saw the hard choice coming and it still was a huge gut punch
he robbed the scarf and hat from dead niko on the menu screen!!!!!
I passed this shadevr 4 days ago
and I'm surprised that I haven't heard about it before
somehow made me look at the world in a different
way, since the soulful game
makes me think about a lot
and makes me miss Niko...
You reviewed Celeste, now you reviewed Oneshot! You only have Outer wilds left until you review all 3 of my favourite games!
Aw I'm happy to hear that 😄 I still need to play the Outer Wilds. It's been on my to-do list for forever now and I plan to get to at least play it before the year is over.
They had one shot end they chose the wrong option to reject me from art school
You're so underrated, absolutely love your work.
Thank you so much!! 😊
8:50 my God, my PC was glitching out before watching the video, that caught me so off-guard, lol
I'm glad I got someone with the fake out 😂
fun fact, I had to create that bit twice cause halfway through production (I started early March) RUclips updated their autoplay layout and I had to scrap my old mock up autoplay animation (also much more in favor of their previous style, I liked the circle timer and full picture of the thumbnails 😅)
I loved that bit
@@AFoxOnTheInternet It was very flavorful, thanks for spending the time to do it
@Rogue Reaper Aw thank you so much! 😄
So I recently played one shot… this is an AMAZING description and review for the game.
Aw thank you so much!! 😄
My brain after seeing you for half a second: RUE???
6:10 child cat person? but they're not a cat!
nice video!
12:51 I like how one is just called “Niko_pancakes”
I love this game.
Also 3:22 yoooo my desktop wallpaper
What it is?
It is one of the best games ever!
I cried at the ending
27:01 they are not real, they are robots, tamed by the Creator of the World Machine (just like all other NPCs (people) in the game except niko), they said they are from the old world because they are based on the real people that the Creator knew. the only difference from the other robots is that they know about the old world and the world they are in
Use name AI or artificial inteligence , more fitting
at 9:49, im gonna watch it cuz im broke and I saw many spoilers, sad thing I did not cry at the last part.
4:26 And now switch!
8:11, I already played it and loved it! I’m safe. It’s one of my favourite games next to Deltarune and for me is another game that beat Undertale by a milestone. I chose to save the world.
the best cat
8:48 (you) SOY UN TROLAZO ME GUSTA EL PEDAZO LALALA LALA LA LALA
I got the one sided george first time... wow..
0:32 i like this part
RUE IS IT YOU?
Niko has the best pog in my opinion
I gotta say, i never played this game, because i don't have a good enough PC to run this masterpiece, but GOD DAMN this game looks good to play. (still planning to play on consoles, if i'm not mistaken it is on consoles)
47:56 d’awwwwww so cute
I had chosen the same pre-solstice ending as you, and didn't initially come to the conclusion that Niko was dead. I had thought that they were trapped in this world forever now, although still alive. And that I couldn't control them anymore because their mission was complete.
This video is what made me realise that, yeah, I murdered a child, didn't I? :c I mean, the other option would have me murdering many more children, but it still hurts.
I really love your videos! I am definitely going to follow!
Aw thank you so much!! 😊

I am currently yelling at the entity on the computer saying
YOU DUMB COMPUTER THING I'VE ALREADY PLAYED THE GAME, IVE DONE SOLSTICE I GOT A FEW ACHIVMENTS, JUST PLEASE LET ME WATCH THE RUclips VIDEO
hello my first video I'm watching of you well other then the oneshot review
LOVE THE PUNS (I'll sub!)
Me hearing him talk to nico: well looks like i have no soul
I want a hug now. I’m happy and sad :( :)
No one will hurt Niko.
Do you think you’ll return to the game on the new console version? If so, do you think you’d make a video on it?
While the impact of playing OneShot for the first time wasn't there, I had a great time revisiting it and I absolutely loved the console port.
this channel is dope
Thank you!! 😄

That glitchy effect when you showed the text "Solstice" made me realize that the 3 colours of the world: the blue barrens, the green glen and the red refuge; they are the 3 primary colours of light. Niko has to traverse 3 lands made up of the 3 primary colours of light, in order to restore light to the world.
very epic 10/10
You know... i dont wanna watch you talking about playground, cause i feel i gonna cry more
Ohh what's playground about? 😮 And is it on Steam or itch. io? I could always use more emotional rollercoaster games in my life 😭😭😭
@@AFoxOnTheInternet I played steam version with Solstiсe update... I used to achieve true ending in my second playground
Hey also if u do Nintendo game covers, mayby u could cover miitopia when it comes out on the switch?
Thank you for the suggestion! 😄I do have an upcoming video in the works, though it's a nostalgia game from the GameCube era instead of a recent one. I do plan to play Miitopia though! I can't promise I'll have a video on it at this time, but I'll definitely add it to my list of games to go over for future video ideas 😄
@@AFoxOnTheInternet AYYYY thx man
Niko... Niko...
walked into Adobe Audition this is so sad 😭
(i was debating weither or not i want to suggest you a number of Free (not to confuse with freeware) video editors and stuff but i feel like i'd be annoying since i talk about it all the time)
Hi thank you for the offer, however I'm going to have to pass on it. You're not annoying for asking and I appreciate it! 😄
This is a great review but you pronouncing Yume nikki as "Yume Nooki" at 3:41 was really funny
Apologies on that 😅 I picked up on that error sometime after this video went up. I definitely have a few mispronounciations here and there and I try to keep an ear out with some of my later stuff
@@AFoxOnTheInternet No worries, i just thought is was funny.
if his setup is on the forest. then how the hell is he getting internet?
I'm sure my internet provider must be asking the same thing. I just hope they don't notice the hundreds of feet worth of the Ethernet cables that I have plugged in 😉
i love you channel
Aw thank you so much!!! ☺️
@@AFoxOnTheInternet new sub ❤❤
Is the version of OneShot you have linked in the description the version that you can play through multiple times with the Solstice update, or is it the shorter one that you can only play through once that you can't close the application wherever you please in? Asking because I'm thinking about starting a letsplay on my channel.
By this I mean the one on the RPG Maker site, not the Steam version
Hi wolf! The one I have linked in the description is the original shoter version of the game. That one you can only play through once.
Parts of the video may induce some paranoia.
Windows Background. wav says hi

Potential spoilers... again
I don't think it's fair to say that OneShot breaks the 4th wall. Instead, it IS the 4th wall, the barrier that seperates you & your world from Niko & TWMs world
