    The Long Halloween is easily one of my favorite Batman movies. It's not number one (that title goes to Under the Red Hood), but it's pretty damn close. It knows what to take and what to change. It also contains some pretty slick animation. Yeah, the CGI is pretty noticeable, but tell me the Chinatown fight isn't badass. The voice acting is 10s across the board. It's just a damn good flick

    While in my opinion the comic had a more impactful ending, I still think the animated film was a serviceable adaptation. Also one old cop in TDRK mentioned his first day on the job and seeing Batman, which was from Year One

    • @robertwild9447
      @robertwild9447 3 года назад +10

      @@LP3Customs Correct! Year One and The Dark Knight Returns comics were both written by Frank Miller, so they are connected. The movies just have such different animation styles and voice actors that I look at them as two separate adaptations, but I did notice the year one movie easter egg at Gordon's house. The Year One movie is an extremely faithful adaptation to the comic, it hardly changes or removes anything. But I'd still highly recommend reading the Year One comic. I just thought the pacing and tone worked better in the comic than the movie, and I personally found some of the voice acting in the movie to be a little flat (although, Bryan Cranston was pitch perfect casting as Gordon, he was terrific). Like I said, I think the Year One movie is OK, but my favorite adaptations are The Dark Knight Returns and Under the Red Hood, I think both of those movies are great. I'd also highly recommend reading the Dark Knight Returns if you haven't read that one yet either.

    I understand this is not a popular opinion, but I did not like this movie. Now, don't get me wrong in thinking I have nothing to praise. The characters, choreography and tone are super strong. But I can't get over how they wrote batman. He's completely incompetent as both a detective and general fighter (like way more than he should be even if he just started), and his decision in the end is equally out of character. Infact, if the ending didn't leave such a bad taste in my mouth, I'd probably enjoy it a lot more. But never in a million years would he have just dropped it like that. There are entire DC series with plots hinging firmly on the fact batman can't flex in that way.

    I actually had a problem with that scene. And it's directly because of that Coin.
    Now the scene is where they're contemplating burning the money isn't in the book, instead they just burn it without discussing it.
    So when they're getting rid of the money in this movie, Batman pulls out a coin. Heads they burn the money, tails they don't. But it's the silver, double headed coin.
    Now this raises a few issues.
    For one, why on earth would Bruce carry a double headed coin or even need it? And two, in the book and in the main canon of DC, that coin is supposed to belong to Harvey. It holds an integral part to his character. It once belonged to his abusive father, who essentially created Harvey's split personality (Two-Face). In the comic, it is integral to his story in the Long Halloween. And that is because of the value it has TO HARVEY and his relationship to his father. Harvey in the comic flips his father's coin whenever he's stressed, when he thinks about his father, or when he's embracing the Two-Face personality. The coin is a constant reminder of his fate, and the reason he became a district attorney.
    So in the movie, when Harvey receives the coin, it has no value to him, his character, or his backstory. It's not just a coin, it's supposed to be Harvey's Coin. His father's coin. Two-Face's coin.
    This scene could have easily been fixed by having Harvey pull out the coin, which would have added to his character, more. If he said "Heads we burn it.", but knew that the coin was double sided, it would have shown his dark side. As if he wanted to burn it despite his legal obligations to the law. And it would have further foreshadowed his transformation into Two-Face.
    My guess is that the were just trying to pad the runtime and give Catwoman more screen time, since in the book as I mentioned, they chose to burn the money, but Catwoman in the movie here gave them the suggestion (Also, why does Catwoman casually have a match with her?). Also, probably because just like in The Dark Knight, they were trying to make Harvey for a thematic purpose, but I don't think it worked here.

    • @allhailthechief67
      @allhailthechief67 2 года назад +19

      Completely agree. I don’t like Batman giving Harvey the coin in the movie cause it’s like Batman encouraging him to leave things to chance. To make decisions regarding justice with just a flip of a coin. And that’s why Batman doesn’t like Two Face’s thought-process in the first place. In The Dark Knight film, Batman scolds Harvey for leaving the fate of people’s lives to chance.
      Perhaps in this movie, Batman was merely joking about deciding the money’s fate with a coin toss. Because again it was just a material object. But I’m sure Batman never intended for Harvey to decide all things, especially the fate of human lives, with the coin.

    • @artsfan5683
      @artsfan5683 2 года назад +27

      "it has no value to him, his character, or his backstory"
      The only one in this list that's correct is his backstory, because the coin isn't Harvey's from the beginning it was given to him.
      But the coin does have importance to his character and he does value it within this movie. The value he has instilled in it has only been slightly changed as it doesn't have the "abusive father" subtext underneath.

    • @dedrik1461

      I see it as Bruce's more manipulative side coming to light, he's always had one and even in the main canon in his earlier interactions with others in the world he likes to give the illusion of choice.
      I find it very believable that due to the events of his father saving falcone he has developed on some level a sort of familial connection he relates to and that currently knowing he's about to take him down carries with him one of the remnants of that relationship, an heirloom from a time of peace if you will, he picks the coin back up again and carries it with him along the way and I think thematically this pairs beautifully with the final conversation between them at the end.
      While I do believe that Harvey's connection to his father and the coin is also an excellent narrative I personally don't prefer it because it implies that Harvey throughout his endeavors in his law career has already been entertaining the corruption of his soul and that while his father in some sense, could be seen as part of the city's pollution, I believe it works better when Harvey's journey through the pollution is tied more personally to his own actions to correct that pollution rather than how he was raised.
      I believe Harvey develops the attachment to the coin as a trauma response, I'll explain: he's about to make this huge decision that immensely impacts his morality, he finds out that he's been manipulated in that choice and that such a huge decision was never left to chance which is where the seeds of the idea of making your own luck are planted, only for him to get back home not too long after and go through another life threatening event in retaliation of a choice he was manipulated into, was this his moral dessert? Is he receiving divine punishment? These are questions that Harvey can ask himself lying in the hospital as he mulls over the events, all he knows is that the sequence events cascaded into an outcome almost entirely out of his control and as he moves forward he'd wish to have a better grasp on controlling the tide rather than flowing with it hence the final foundation for his attachment to the coin being laid.
      That's how I saw it, it worked for me but I know you might have preferred it your way, I think in terms of the movie it first into the narrative of the film though and hope this helped you see the other side

    This Two face is by far one of my favorites. The Dark Knights version is still good. But the dynamic of Batman giving Harvey the coin is amazing to me. If you think abt it, it was almost like Batman was shedding the selfish desires Carmine had wished Bruce to indulge in while burdening Harvey with that life. As soon as Harvey got that coin he bet it all on burning the money or turning it in and he took that extra step, beginning a line of bringing Harvey to Gordons level, to then Batmans to something more extreme to stop the mob. A perfect trio in the forms of which the war against crime is fought. It's also ironic since Carmine and Batman both mirror Harveys personalitys as himself and Two Face. Don't get me started on Two Faces dynamic with Solomon Grundy. Grundy started out as a criminal who died and became a more sympathetic character where Two Face is the opposite. They were both reborn to fill a purpose. Genuinely, this is by far my favorite version of Two Face. His protectiveness for Harvey making the multi personality disorder aspect more realistic and his protectiveness for his wife and for Gotham shows that he's not just a two bit mobster. He's more than that. I really enjoy when adaptations show Harvey as trying to do some kind of good but Two Face is the one who takes all the actions to make it possible though he gets carried away such as Arkham Knight when he robs the banks. Harvey's justification is that he wants to clean out the laundered money from the other mobsters and put it to good use. Two Face turns it into a full on mobster scheme of its own. Sorry this is really long. I just love the character.

    The Movie/movies are good but didn't impact me the way the comic did, and I'm not one of those people always saying "The Book is better." I don't know if it was the changes, ending or the fact that slow burn noir stories just work better as comics, but I remember wanting it to just get to the end. That's incredibly uncharacteristic for me, I've been reading, collecting and obsessing over comics (especially DC) for 30 years and no matter how well I know a story or dislike a character or an arc I don't want to give up on them. Even watching Marvel set the legacy and characters of that world on fire the past 3 years.... I stay positive. DC animated films have always been held at a higher standard and are good even when they miss, I think it's one of those situations where the comic is just too good to be outdone.

    I love this movie, it's definitely different than the comics but not worse, just different and has it's own special qualities going for it.
    One (very minor) critique though, the family trick-or-treating at the end should've been Gordon and his family with the kid in the Batman costume being Barbara, really just make that first moment with Jim and the family at the beginning of pt1 come full circle.

      I didn't say that "all the choices" didn't make sense. I said that they changed the story and the characters from the comic. They dumbed The Long Halloween down by changing it as they did, and I hate that.
      Here is an example: In the graphic novel, no one ever figures out who the Holiday killer truly is. If Batman had figured out that it was Gilda Dent, he would have arrested her for the serial killings. In the animated film, Batman does figure out that she is the killer, and he lets her get away with it. Batman would NEVER let a serial killer walk free. If you think that THAT choice "made perfect sense," then you don't understand Batman as a character. The animated film made Batman overly sympathetic to killers.

    • @eldritchpumpkinghost2968
      @eldritchpumpkinghost2968 3 года назад

      @@themodernmythicist2282 I can agree with that a bit. They definitely wrote themselves into a corner by letting Batman know. If he arrests her they he’s an asshole and bad person for not understanding her situation. But letting her go was kinda off too unless it comes back in a Dark Victory story. It was best to just let her get away with it without Batman knowing.

And more importantly, they represent hope for those that need it.
