Breadfruit, a staple food of the tropics

- Typically green and scaly on the outside, white and smooth like squash on the inside, breadfruit is a starchy member of the fig family that's similar in taste to a potato, and smells like fresh baked bread when cooked. But you're not likely to come across it in most American grocery stores. Conor Knighton explores the history of breadfruit, a "canoe plant" first brought to Hawaii centuries ago by Polynesian explorers, and which today is used in everything from tacos and stews, to pizza, bagels, and even vodka.
It’s an important staple in the Caribbean, in Jamaica we boil, roast or fry it.
@Robert Joseph
Are you in Florida? Tropical climate here (in Florida) just like in the Caribbean.
I discovered it upon my first trip to Jamaica in January 2019 and it's incredible. I'm going back to Jamaica in January and will be sure to eat some again.
Mark Ferguson, Amateur Organist have some for me, or leave a few on the trees!🤣
@@sasharobins6437
Key word Sasha, "SOME" not ALL 🤣🤣🤣. I love to eat as you can tell by my current (yet slowly shrinking) size as I'm a 'foodie' for sure and especially ethnic foods.
I gained 10 lbs on that trip and quickly lost 14 lbs when I got back. There was no way that I was going to Jamaica as a pescatarian and not eat the REAL Jamaican favourites of mine long before becoming a vegetarian then a pescatarian.
All of the Jamaican food I had in 8 years of living in the capital of the Caribbean, BROOKLYN NYC, wouldn't compare to the fresh and TRUE unaltered Jamaican cuisine that I got there. I'll bring you back some and some sweet sop too ♥️♥️♥️😁😁.
@@bhigdaddymark Yes, a strange delightful part of the USA just about anything tropical grows there.
Damn. They found out.
Lol
And the prices are likely to skyrocket as a result....😀
I know. I hope they don't try anything crazy and spoil it.
😂
😂😂 I said the same thing ..DAMMIT!
Yes it’s very popular in my country Barbados 🇧🇧.
Very popular in Trinidad & Tobago as well
Breadfruit is a staple food in the Caribbean aswell, in Puerto Rico we eat it with cod fish.
In St. Vincent and the Grenadines as well
Ruben Mercado yo tambien con salt fish 🇻🇨🇻🇨🇻🇨🇻🇨🇻🇨
Lo mismo en Guadalupe. .We do the same in Guadeloupe.
Damn sounds delicious
@@supermodelatlanta1354 in micronesia it is like rice or potatoes
I made breadfruit fries and they turned out really well. I love that they have double the amount of fiber than potatoes!
Breadfruit a part of our national dish in Jamaica! So.... Yummy
This is ackee & saltfish soulmate.
There is a Bajan dish using breadfruit called cou-cou. This dish uses breadfruit as opposed to cornmeal (in traditional cou-cou) and due to this has a slighty different texture , cooking with okra and making a solid base for stewed fish , etc. yummy.
Breadfruit doesn't smell like bread when cooked....wtf. Breadfruit has a slightly sweet flavor, and has a fruity, ever so slightly piney smell. It's a bit dry, and goes well with oily food. I
Once its classified as gluten free, price gonna skyrocket

I discovered this delicious item amongst many other delicious fruit and vegetables upon my very first trip to Jamaica in January of 2019. This was particularly delicious and unbeknownst to me is also available here in Florida (at least). I wish that the other delicious fruit that I had on that trip were available here like sweet sop(♥️♥️♥️♥️). When I return to Jamaica this January 2020, I'll be sure to bring back the seeds of my favourite fruits to grow them here. Jamaica is amazing!
@Mark Ferguson, Amateur Organist would you be willing to share your seeds, even for a price? Thank you

Our (my friends and I) trip scheduled to fly out on January 4th 2022 was postponed until the spring or summer of 2022 due to the most recent omicron variant and we're hoping that waiting until the spring or summer will mean safer travelling out of this country and to other countries like Jamaica who (more power to them) takes Covid-19 very SERIOUSLY and we didn't want to risk getting stuck there, so we're waiting it out. Now to answer your question, I'd gladly share with you since you've reached out to me and it would be my complete pleasure too therefore costing you a big ZERO. IF it's even possible to bring seeds into this country and it not be a major hassle, I'd be most happy to share indeed. We can figure out how to stay in touch later, let me get there first...
You should be able to find sour sop in any Caribbean grocery store. You can also find the pulp frozen in a few Spanish brands, Goya being one of the brands. There are also companies in Florida that ship exotic tropical fruit. One is Fruits and Roots and I know there is at least one more I just cannot think of the name right now. Another is Miami Fruit.

You're the BEST Tracy, THANKS!! I hope that I'll be able to get Jamaican Pineapple as the version from Hawaii doesn't stand in its shadow...
As a Barbadian, I approve. One of the best tasting foods out there and can be prepared in a variety of ways. Fried, boiled, baked or the best way, roasted on an open fire. Nothing beats a good 'yella meat'.
It is an important staple in the southern part of Nigeria. We also have an Indigenous variety which is mainly breadfruit seeds delicious roasted, boiled etc.
Also called catahar..boiled seeds are delicious and high in protein, I heard. Which may explain the smelly farts after indulging 😊
It is also a staple food on the Caribbean Coast of Central America; Belize, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica. I'm from the East Coast of Nicaragua and we grew up eating Breadfruit. Steamed, roasted, fried and also in the form a porridge called "Criminal".
M OV I live in Costa Rica , it grows all over the jungle here!
So now, watch the prices go sky high and the powers that be corner and command the market.
Yep. You're right.
You mean Monsanto if they haven’t already!
Breadfruit is part of our menu here in Jamaica. Just today got a nice big one will be roastong it tomorrow. Have 6 trees to collect for planting.

Perfect side dish for your meat, chicken, pork or seafood.
Now, I am hungry. ;))
Breadfruit is so versatile. The possibilities are endless. Tostones are my fantastic, but the "rellenos" and "croquetas" are so delicious.

That's about when I lived there I had the HOTEL Hana Stables then.
Small word.. Great to Meat You Robbie...
We can find whole, giant Jackfruit in ethnic markets here in California, but sadly no Breadfruit. Some day I hope it's sold here. It's delicious in its green and firm stage as well as its soft ripe yellow stage. Boiled, steamed, baked, fire roasted until it's charred black , deep fried, mashed, cooked in a Casserole, sweet or savory, it's all good, delicious and yes, it's gluten free. That last part will surely jack the prices up sky high. Those of you that have access to abundant fruit bearing trees, enjoy it well. You are very fortunate!
Watching from Botswana...southern Africa. Love the footage 🥰💚

Breadfruit is a daily staple in Indonesia and they call it "Sukun".
In Chuuk, Micronesia we call it Mááy. We cook it and pound it into Kon. And if we take the Kon and burry it for months, it becomes Mar and has a sour taste. But my favorite is when we steam it until it’s soft then poured with sweet coconut milk over it 🤤
In my place, Kerala, south of India, the fruit is called "kadachakka" and grows in harmony with their bigger brother, the jackfruit.
excellent to make "fries" and has very low glycemic index

People from the Carribean think they have many ways to cook this food. Come to Micronesia and see us do it. We have over 20 different breadfruit types and hundreds of ways to prepare it.
It can substitute for potato as in Breadfruit salad or in scalloped breadfruit too. It takes on the flavour of whatever type of gravy it’s in also. The best in stew fish, rather Bahamian stew fish.
It’s delicious sautéed in butter.
delicious when cooked with coconut milk

Those people are slow, we've been eating breadfruit for so long, there's still alot for them to discover.
You can grow them along the coast south of West Palm Beach down through the keys. Thats about the only area on the mainland.
Time to invest in breadfruit
Best way to eat is fried. When it’s green take out the skin and the inside/center, cut the white part left in pieces and fry it.
