@@MuddyPoppins I've seen Bird, he's one of my favorite players ever. Bird is a Wing and his primary job was to score, Kidd and Nash were Points whose primary job was to pass the ball. @@gwarfanatik I don't think Bird is a better player than Jordan, I never said that. I was only pointing out that Larry was putting in the work against Jordan *and* Pippen at the end of his career when Bird himself admitted he should've retired in '88 due to his debilitated back and other major injuries, and he should be given his due when we have the GOAT conversation. Jordan's dynasty didn't really begin until after Bird and Magic's rivalry saved the NBA in one of the most talent-rich eras of the league, but I certainly wasn't saying that Bird is an overall better player than Jordan. Still, Jordan's Bulls never beat Bird's Celtics in the playoffs, and the latter games were with Pippen and Phil Jackson as coach, and that's a fact. Jordan was scoring 49 points in these games and still lost to the Celtics in those playoffs, even when Jordan was having the most spectacular season of any player in league history, and a lot of basketball fans don't know these facts about how great Bird and the 80's Celtics were playing against the best.

Nah you're mad wrong for saying there was no athletes back then... bro, peep the statistics... Wilt and Bill Russell set athletic records in college that most athletes STILL cant come close to, they were ahead of their time athletically... in terms of in the NBA yeah the competition back in the 60s was no where near as strong now, but in the 70s and 80s Kareem was going up against some monsters too, Wes Unseld, Elvin Hayes, Bob McAdoo in the 70s and in the 80s guys like Moses Malone, Robert Parish, young Hakeem, etc etc etc... you gotta do the knowledge and not just base your opinion off recency bias. To me Bron is the second greatest player of all time, but MJ trumps him in all things except longevity in my opinion. 6 for 6 with 6 finals mvps, never went to a game 7 in the finals, where as Lebron is the only player in the goat debate with an actual LOSING Finals record, Mike, Kobe, Kareem, Magic, Bird, Shaq, Duncan, Hakeem etc all got winning Finals records but Bron doesnt? Overall, more players have athleticism today, but back then being a role player didn't pay that well, so a lot of players had day jobs. The stars back then we're just as athletic as the stars today, and if they had access to the same information and training equipment today's players have, their stats would be comparable, maybe even better. I watched all these guys in the 80's and 90's, and Larry is my #1 pick all time team, then MJ, then Magic, Kobe, and Wilt, ..because Larry did it all, and he brought the basketball IQ and leadership along with. ..MJ's raw athleticism was unparalleled, and he had a pretty complete game too, minus the rebounding maybe, but look, MJ was able to even draw more fouls with his crazy moves mid air, so you gotta place a REAL value on that, but he couldn't take a band of misfit toys to all those championships like Larry did. Bird did everything, including the steals he took or caused constantly...., and elevated everyone around him the process.
I watched Bird do the impossible every game for his first 10 years, while the Bulls fell out in the first round it seemed in spite of Jordan's point totals, for his first seven years, (or until Pippen came along).

Jordan was pure athleticism, obsessively competitive, and probably the most talented basketball player in NBA history. At the same time, Bird wasn't athletic, he was slow, he couldn't jump high, but he made up for all that by being a literal genius when it came to playing on the court. He was a deadly shooter, he invented big men shooting 3's, he was a crafty passer, he was snatching double-digit rebounds throughout all his career, he was a major league trash talker, and his court awareness + basketball IQ was on another level. When you have a natural aptitude on the level of a player like Bird, sure having physical and athletic gifts would be a huge advantage, but even without it, he was still a feared monster on the court even with a debilitated back and injured feet toward the last few years of his career. He made everyone he played with and played against to be better, and he won 3 consecutive MVPs and 3 championships in arguably the most talent-rich era in NBA history. He should be given his due and respect as one of the greatest players who played the game.

BUT, any conversation about GOAT without Larry Bird in it, really ain't no conversation about GOAT. Magic, Kareem and Lebron's careers plus their ability puts in them in GOAT conversation as well. To me however, the only real debate is between Bird and Jordan. Unfortunately, I didn't get to witness Bill and Wilt much, there were incredible. I understand that you are weren't born then but to say that there were no athletes is downright ridiculous bordering on ignorant. Fortunately I was around then. You're going to name the top 5 players of the NBA and not one of you mentioned Wilt Chamberlain? Chamberlain was stronger than Shaquille even though he may not look like it. If you wanna get an idea of how big Wilt Chamberlain was just go look at the video where hes shaking hands with Shaquille. I believe it was a tip off between the Orlando Magic and the New York Knicks with Patrick Ewing. Patrick Ewing is 7' tall and Wilt made him look like he was a small forward. Shaquille came out to the center court and Wilt shook his hand. You could see Shaquille's whole upper body moving from the handshake. When Chamberlain was on the Los Angeles Lakers his playing weight was between 300/310 pounds. They changed NBA rules because of Wilt.

Man, the slam dunk contests during those times were dope. You guys should check them out. No doubt MJ was and still is the best ever. So far..

Dunk contests are overrated. They're repetitive and mostly are gimmick moves that you can't really do during the real game.

Michael Jordan never won a single playoff game against Larry Bird's Celtics. This was as close as he came, and oddly it was on the road. The Celtics went 39-1 at home one year, their only loss being to the trailblazers. Old Boston Garden was the best home court advantage in all of basketball because fans were right on top of the players.

If someone polled former NBA players and coaches, the most qualified people on earth to give an opinion on the GOAT debate, 98% say its MJ. The other 2% are gonna say something crazy like Wilt or Kareem or Bird. None of them say Lebron James is the GOAT
